Spyderco thumb hole problem: It cuts!

Callouses? Bull-$H!+.

I have done plenty of hard work in my day, first as a tree climber for Davey Tree and later working on oil rigs off-shore and in the "blankety" desert. I finally got myself re-educated and began a career working inside jobs.

At my age (now 71) I don't need to develop callouses.

I will try to break the "crisp" edge on the spyder-hole with something.
In that case, a little 1000 grit sandpaper and a little time would fix your issue. I would think 71 years of experience would tell you that?

All in jest, have a great Sunday!

Well yes I had thought of that, but its a really nice knife and I didn't want to mess it up without seeking advice.

The ceramic rod method will be my first go at it. The cone grinder on a Dremel tool sounds effective but may be too agressive for me. I really want to keep it looking stock.

A cone grinder for a dremel or die grinder but turned by hand against the hole will cleanly and slightly reduce the edge.

This. Although the ceramic rod would be my first choice, if you have one. A few light passes with a round needle file will work too. It won’t take much.

I don’t have 160 Spydercos, but I once had a Pac Salt that was a bit “overly crisp” and I used the Dremel-bit-by-hand technique, as I didn’t have a satisfactory ceramic rod at the time.

As to the consistency of my hands…y’all can keep your seething minds out of the gutter. 😁

I had this problem on one of my Spyderco’s from Japan. I took a Dremel to and knocked the edge off. It really was sharp.

To the OP I’d try hand turning a 1” ball shaped grinding stone that’s oiled. It shouldn’t take much at all. Also we would really like to see pics of the entire knife and close ups of the Spydiehole.

About 140 are folders and about 120 of those use a hole as a blade opening device.
Perhaps it’s for another thread but you have definitely peaked my interest in seeing these remaining 20 Spydercos !

Some of mine were too sharp; literal bleeding from thumb. High grit sandpaper takes care of that.
Spyderholes vary from knife to knife. Some have a bit of a chamfer, whereas others are idiotically sharp.

As for tougher skin, that ain't gonna happen for me.
My skin likes to fall off with the greatest of ease. Hard work just causes continued skin tears, rather than callouses.
I have done stupid amounts of manual work over extended periods of time, but my skin still does its own thing...and its own thing is to fall off of me. :D

I did develop callouses at the base of my fingers one time; all that did was make a deeper wound when they ripped off my hand.
Yay!

they have these (0.75 - 1" diameter?) grinding balls for drills, that I'd use by hand to take off the edge. Easier than sandpaper not to scratch the knife.

^ This. I tend to use a sanding ball on most of my spydercos. I have never cut myself but I tend to remove the pointy edge for comfort. I guess I'm a wuss?

Billy The Hungry Billy The Hungry , considering I'm one of the top 100 hand models in the world, my hands are my livelihood. You non-models just wouldn't understand.

I have this crappy thing and I use the diamond rod to soften those edges. I've done this on every Spyderco I've owned and it fixed the problem every time.

Now that you mention it, some of my Spydie holes are a bit--not really sharp--but abrasive, including my current AEDC Endura. I had never noticed this before because nothing but my thumbnail or fingernail comes into contact with the edge of the hole except when I open it with my forefinger, which I don't do except when showing off because it is awkward. I never use the fleshy part of my thumb for opening because I can't get a really good SNAP! that way.

The reason I bought my first Spyderco was that I had a blister on the end of my thumb from trying to break in a SOG Flash AT. I was looking for a knife I could open without contacting the skin on my thumb. I saw a Youtube video where a guy showed how to flick open any of several Spydercos with a flick of the thumb or any finger, using the thumbnail or fingernail, not the skin. I ordered a PM3 and it worked great, except that I never could quite flick it with my pinkie.

FWIW, I used to see posts where people complained about painful flipper tabs, and my reactions were much the same as a lot of people in this thread - "You need to set down your sippy cup, put on your big-boy pants, and start peeing standing up, etc, etc."

Then I got a knife with a really strong detente and sharp tab, and the tears flowed down my cheeks both for the pain in my girlie finger and the regret.
