Spyderco Tuff: 5 months use.

Sorry to get to the party late. Schemp is a favorite designer of mine. My question: At this price point, would you recommend it over the ZT 0560. All things being equal, another hard use folder in Elmax steel. Like the tuff, over built as well.

I tend to like larger folders due to my large hands. I have a job in the city. White shirt and trousers attire. I bought a bm 940 for edc I want it to be low profile,-out of sight, out of mind type philosophy. Unfortunately, my wife thought it was perfect and it's hers. I was leaning towards the bm 810, zt 550, or zt 560. However, after reading your outstanding review, I am re-evaluating my decision. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sorry, I'm not a particularly frequent visitor to these shores; I suspect you have long since made your decision and I hope you are happy with it!

Great review - and good work on the ladle! It seems to me you would greatly benefit from a machete or kukri for all that brush. But I guess the Tuff will do in a pinch! ;)

I do have tools much appropriate for these tasks but used the Tuff for testing purposes.

i have to agree with everyone else, that was a very excellent review. this is the kind i like to read. i use mine for anything and everything but, i don't carry a camera to document the work i do. i should but, i know i'd break it. thanks!

I usually use a compact camera or my phone for these review pics. The phone is often the only option when I'm using a knife for an EDC task. The compact is with me when I plan ahead, eg. Hunting. Unfortunately, the camera is in a pretty disgusting state now! My next compact will be waterproof!

So how does that puppy lock up after another 9 months of use? Could you post some pics

Wow, awesome review! I loved the analogy of picking a pub fight with a crazy guy, a little humor sprinkled in never hurts.

I own a Tuff and it is one of the ones with that lock failure you speak of, i bought it the year it was released "pre-ordered" and the day I got it is the day i discovered the failure.... I was sitting on my couch happily fondling my new knife pleasuring every open and closing of this beastly blade imagining all hard use i will get out of it in the future when I decided to test its lock strength by whacking the spine on my couch arm so as not scratch it up and to my surprise and demise to my eyes it failed it failed so easily too couldnt believe it so I tried it again using least amount of force possible and it failed again and again and again sometimes the blade would come back so fast i swear it could lop a finger off. Needless to say I was very disgruntled and pretty saddened I put it in my Knife storage box and have yet to carry it since or send it in for replacement, mostly procrastination but some is I've lost faith in it as a reliable knife but your review of it has inspired me to send it away to spyderco for replacement so i may enjoy this knife as you have.

I know that everyone is already singing the praises of this review but let me just add to the chorus. Thank you very much for a great read and an informed viewpoint.

Bad luck mate, I'd send it in to Spyderco. This knife is almost useless if the user doesn't have confidence in it.

Lock up has barely changed. It's still pretty stiff in comparison to most frame locks. Still no play and no failures. Lock up is about 35-40%.

The edge damage hasn't sharpened out yet:

No corrosion problems- the staining on the blade is not a patina, it's just grime! I'm still using the knife regularly and I still think it's a good bit of kit.
