Spyderco VG-10 Durability Review

I dont know. He said 40 degree edge from a SharpMaker. Like screwing up toast if its a bad edge. Dirt maybe but if the edge just rolled rather than dulled then maybe the blade is soft?

I use a Delica with VG-10. I changed the edge to 30 degrees and keep it hair splitting sharp. I dont cut much abrasive stuff and it dulls fairly fast. Combo of the 30 degree edge Im sure but still...

I have noticed my Endura4 dull fairly easy compaired to my old Endura1 that thing keeps an edge forever. I understand the idea of easy to resharpen is also easy to dull I don`t mind the trade off but it is there. Not knocking Spyderco or the knives that made me start collecting the good stuff. I would take an endura dull over most others sharp just out of the joy of a comfortable handle.

If you try and use it in practical survival conditions to cut rope, wood, etc, the edge gets dull oh so quick!

many companies use VG10 in larger blades, and in my experience with VG10 it has been excellent. maybe you just got a lemon? nothing is perfect.

Could be! It sharpens again quickly so that is a relief! If you just cut paper u can be happy forever, but in real use, I see it getting dull soon. I so much prefer the 1095 from ESEE. I never use the folders for the hard work, they are a backup. But when i tested the VG10 it got dull super-quick. After shaving a stick, it wouldn\t cut paper that easy as before.

I was going to multi quote but I realized most of you are saying the same thing. I'll try to address everything now.

1. Sal - I in no way meant to talk down to Spyderco or the VG-10 that you use. Spyderco is one of my favorite knife companies and I can assure you there is nothing to apologize for  . After reading more posts, I'm fairly certain that what happened has nothing to do with Spyderco and all to do with how the knife was used. Which brings me to number two.

2. Everyone who mentioned the rolled edge is probably correct. I guarantee the edge was not screwed up from the beginning. The edge is maintained at 40 degrees with the Sharpmaker and subsequently stropped. It HAS been used before (cutting paracord, cardboard, small chores) so I don't think it had a wire edge. Unless I'm wrong and the wire edge could have held up during the cardboard and paracord but failed on the rope and sticks? It was probably caused by cutting "dirty/sandy" materials (which many people also mentioned) and the edge rolling. Again, it's hard for me to believe that at 40 degrees, the edge rolled so easily (unless it really was caused by dirt or sand in the rope).

Anyway, the beauty of VG-10 is that it takes 5 seconds to sharpen. So I'm back where I started and I'll put it through it's paces the next time I get the chance. I'll update this thread with the results. Thanks for all who replied.

Sorry it took so long but here is the promised update.

Conclusion: I'm 98% sure I just got unlucky and rolled the edge right off the bat. The day after I posted the thread I used the knife again cutting rope and straps. It performed great and could still shave at the end of the day. Here is a crappy cell phone pic of the rope in case anyone is wondering.

Thanks to all who responded

Yah, natural fiber rope is pretty abrasive, and (as many people have already said) old rope picks up crap, like sand and dirt, which can be harder than the steel of your knife. Glad to hear it worked well for you today!

maverick3981, most likely you had poor sample. Fällkniven uses VG-10 (though its laminated) in their fixed blades and there are plenty fans for Fällkniven. They're excellent survival and bushcraft knives.

I also have experienced disappointment with Spyderco's VG10. I would consider it a sharpening issue, except the VG10 in my Fallkniven performs well, and I'm using the same sharpening device(sharpmaker) for both knives.Considered asking about this on Spyderco forum, but figured I'd be flamed to death.

What is your particular issue?

Me thinks the bevel angle may hold the answer

Josh K,dulls quickly.

Unit,willing to hear more.

Define quickly please, what are you cutting and are you sure you don't have a wire edge? Not trying to be mean or anything, but when you say "dulls quickly" it makes me wonder what you're cutting. :)

Josh K ,all sorts of things, cardboard seems to kill it quickest.I also work with wood, kydex, plastic, leather, etc. It really depends on what I'm doing. Have a Spyderco Endura 3 Stainless in Aus6 which is great. Finally went to a Benchmade 710D2,but always wondered why the Spyderco VG10 would dull so fast.

If it seems abnormal it might be worth it to send it in and have them check it. Could have been a bad batch of heat treat.
