Spyderco Vs. Mcusta Vs. Fallkniven

For your requirements, I now think about another great alternative. A truly chic french pocket knife that's just within your budget (I did a quick check at worldknives, don't know other USA dealers): the modern Fontenille-Pataud "Le Thiers".
I have this one with the pictured amourette wood handle, and there are other variants as well:

I saw that when I searched for videos on the Take, if it had a second scale I’d be all over it.

Dagon and bammann45,

How is the detent on the Take and P1?

Here is how I see it:

I own a Walker. It's a great looking knife. It's not a dress knife in my opinion. I like it, it looks good, but it's not dressy.

I am really liking that Fallkniven. I am going to add one soon, and I think I'll put a clip on it if possible. It's just looks classy.

You wouldn't go wrong with Mcusta either. They look great and some look the part for dress.

William Henry makes some you might want to take a look at as well. You might be able to stay in your budget with them, I don't remember.

I have a mesquite Mnandi, and it would be great for dress. I just won't wear it. I'll get that Fallkniven for sure if I think I can add a clip.

I bought a Mnandi when I was on a CRK buying kick last year, and I got a WH in trade last fall. I sold the WH and traded the Mnandi, right now I’m regretting those dessions. And no the cheapest WH is $100 over my limit and the one that I had is (and wish I still had) is something like $300 over my current limit.

I had the mc-51d, um....now I don't. cool little knife, but I did not like the pocket clip, when you go to grab the knife you just push the clip together and it sticks in your pocket. The ergos were not the best ether, to many sharp edges.

Ergonomics aside I would probably go with a Fallkniven, although it is nearly too close to call.

I like the Caly3 ergos and wire clip. The Walker I found too small; the Mcusta has a blade ground too thick for me.

I like the wood on the MCusta though.

here is photo of Mcusta side by side with Kopa and Caly
all knifes are good , all very sharp.
but Mcusta has smoothest opening of all , and best look (in my opinion).

I have the Take in Staminawood, the Caly 3 and the Walker. I rarely carry the Caly 3 - it is a jeans knife, and not that small. Of my Spydercos, the Rookie and the Walker get carried the most, but in jeans. For work - the Mcusta Take or a Moki (or a smaller knife) might make it in my pocket. My copy of the Take is a very pretty and nicely made knife. It isn't the slickest opener, given the lask of a clip and the surface. It is one nice knife.
The Mcusta Take is about 2.2 Oz and 94mm long closed, the Walker is less than 2 oz and 92mm long, and the Caly 3 is just under 3 oz and 4" long.
The Take is the only one of the knives that I have mentioned that might be considered elegant, other than the 2 Mokis that I have. The Caly 3 is a nice knife, but not elegant. I'd say the same thing about the Walker. The only Spydercos that make it into my pocket at work are smaller, like the Kopa or Kiwi.

I'd get the Mcusta. Everyone that I've handled is quite nice.

I think there is no "bad choice" in your list.;)

I like the looks of the mcusta's the most and would pick a wood handled one.
They are little but you don't mind. They are very classy looking knives.

Although i don't think the fallkniven is the best looking folder of the falkniven knives it has a very good steel.
I carry a little fh9 for weeks now and like it very much:thumbup:.
Maybe also look at the tk3 knives.

The spyderco's are also very nice and the cf caly is high on my wish list.
Great ergo's and nice steel and good looking handles.

But i have to warn you about the leafstorm. It does not have the ergo's most spyderco's have. I handled one and it's not the knife for me. I don't like the handling ergo's of this Wilkins design. But i like the looks very much but would not be a user for me.

So if you want ergo's go for the cf caly but if you want "looks" the Mcusta is the one.
Fallkniven has nice classics and i think the best (user) steel of the ones you selected.

Ah, that was one of my very first review clips. I hope you found it informative.
Personally I wouldn't worry about the Thiers being open at one side. It is sturdy enough for normal gentlemen use, and you won't cut yourself. Or perhaps you simply don't like the looks!

Dagon and bammann45,

The blade of my Take stays nicely shut when you shake the knife, if that is what you mean?

By the way, do also check the Fallkniven lockbacks. I think they fit your requirements better than the bigger P.

I agree with Joel. It looks great but the grip isn't ideal. If you don't watch out you can cut yourself at the end of the blade.

I did, Your video’s are nice, particularly since they don’t drag on and on and on…

Or perhaps you simply don't like the looks!

That’s about it, It looks a bit to post modern for my taste.

That’s exactly what I wanted to know.

Seems this is few months old, but what did you end up getting?

I have the Caly 3 and the Mcusta Take Damascus Knife w/ Cocobolo Wood Handle MC-74D.

My Mcusta does not have a perfectly centered blade, and it bugs me that it leans over to one side. If I tighten up the pivot, it gets better, not perfect, but is then a bit harder to open and close. In fact, the reason I came across this thread, was to find whether anybody had posted on centering a Mcusta blade.

The Mcusta is dead on perfect in every other respect and if I can get the right screw drivers to loosen the scales and center this blade, I will be one happy camper. Looks like everybody else has had no issues with Mcusta blade centeredness and I believe if you ask the dealer you buy from to hand select your knife.. you won't have any issues.

For me, one key decision to make between these two knives is do you prefer clipped.. nor not clipped. The Caly 3 has the ultimate low-profile wire clip.

The Mcusta can be dropped into your pocket, or you can use the belt loop with the fancy fabric knife sheath that it comes with.

While the Caly 3 has some similarities to the Sage 1.. to me.. there is no comparison. The Caly 3 is a more streamlined, smooth package. In fact, I'm in the process of trading my Sage 1 for a Nemesis Knives Imp. It's a smaller knife than the Caly 3 or Mcusta.. but if the blade length is right for you.. it's definately one to consider, @ around $100.

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest the Mcusta. The only thing I don't like about that particular model is the lack of a pocket clip. Gorgeous in real life.

Another vote for one of the wood-scaled Mcustas. They are beautiful to behold, the wood looks very dressy, reports on operation are good, and the steel is very good, too. The Fallkniven and Spyderco offerings are more functional looking and less elegant, IMO. I think you will not want to use a clip on your dressy knife, YMMV.
