Spyderco Vs. Mcusta Vs. Fallkniven

Quality wise they are all excellent but IMO the very practical Spydie hole makes the blade too wide for a Gent's folder, and the Falk folders I've seen were all too thick in the handle - so I also vote for the McCusta if you're looking for a dressy knife. A member in another forum just bought one and had nothing but praise for it - they are excellent knives that are very under-rated. I have a discontinued model with layered VG10 blade and can attest to the quality, thanks to precise CNC machining

Another option you should consider are some of the smaller Al Mar foders, these are also made in Seki

For a "dress folder" I would not go with a Spyderco knife-they are not built to look good.

I would go Fallkniven myself, because of the lock, but if you like liner locks MCusta is great. My local dealer has loads of models including those you describe-excellent build quality, sharp as a razor and very pretty. The clip is a low rider too.

For your requirements, I now think about another great alternative. A truly chic french pocket knife that's just within your budget (I did a quick check at worldknives, don't know other USA dealers): the modern Fontenille-Pataud "Le Thiers".
I have this one with the pictured amourette wood handle, and there are other variants as well:

That is a really cool/unique knife.

Only drawback is the exposed edge of the blade, I keep my knives extremely sharp and I would be concerned about "peeling" a layer of skin off my fingers digging it out of my pocket.

Basically the need has arisen for a small elegant folder. Something with a blade length of 3 inches or less, light enough to be carried in pocket, something of high quality. And something that could be had for under $150, preferably less.

When I read your requirements, my mind immediately said Mcusta.

I have a Mcusta Bamboo. Except for handle material, the same as trix2004 pictures.
2 3/4" plain edge VG-10, Cocobolo wood bamboo shaped handles, satin brushed Damascus steel bolster. Tsuchime(hammered) reveresible stainless pocket clip. Black nylon and brown leather belt sheath. Like all Mcusta's, silk smooth opening.
GORGEOUS gentlemans knife.

Don't get me wrong, you're other choices would also be excellent.
Spyderco is currently my favorite knfe company and the items you note would be great choices. I have a Caly and it would probably be the best choice of the three.

Fallkniven is also excellent, and the one you show is very nice.

But, I think Mcusta comes closest to your description.

I am waiting to get my first McCusta. I had the pleasure of dining with Jonnymac and we compared a bunch of knives. He brought out a McCusta and I fell in love with it. I just have not pulled the trigger, but it is definitely on the want list. They are a real sleeper. I have not held a Fallkniven so I cannot comment. As you know, you cannot go wrong with a Spyderco. That Caly looks great, and even fits my large hands well. Carbon fiber scales adds alot to the aesthetics.

I never noticed that this thread went back to the top.
Seems this is few months old, but what did you end up getting?

My Mcusta does not have a perfectly centered blade, and it bugs me that it leans over to one side.

I couldn’t decide so I bought both the Mcusta Take and the Caly 3 ZDP. I found the Caly to be more medium duty then I was looking for so I sold it, but since most of my knife use tends towards medium I bought a standard VG-10/G10 one as well as a pair of SE’s that I found on clearance.

My Mcusta has no issues whatsoever. Though I was able to inspect it before I bought it at a gun show, I paid more then had I bought it on line but I was happy to be able to pick out the one with the wood grain I liked the best.
I'm going to go against the grain and suggest the Mcusta. The only thing I don't like about that particular model is the lack of a pocket clip. Gorgeous in real life.

Real life is the key word. This is really a knife that you have to hold in your hand, it gets complimented by people who get scared at the site of a Spyderco Ladybug. Its simply a fantastic looking knife.

Basically I was happy to try something different then the usual Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw knives that I usually buy.
