Spyderco

In my experience, Spyderco's S30V is a helluva steel: not too hard to sharpen, great edge retention, stubborn to rust, and not easily "breakable," "chippable," or any other -able that you might apply to cutlery metallurgy. My Native, Chinook, Militaries, and all the other countless models have taken to being used and keep on going and looking like new.
Thank you for your reply.

I was reading archieblue`s post and he indicated that spyderco is now using Paul bos to do there heat treating. Maybe this change corrected the problem. Some of the post did indicate a chipping problem with this particular blade using S30V.

I don't think so. I've never had a problem with my hard used S30V knives. I honestly think it's just posts from people who have to be different and choose to be naysayers of anything that people think is cool.

And S30V is definitely cool.

Thats starting to make me feel better about this blade,Thanks.

Apparently, once you hold a Native you'll feel great about it. The ergo's rock. Good choice of knife there.

Thank you,When i bought the spyderco native and i started reading negative posts about this particular blade using the s30v and the blade chipping problem i almost took the knife back for a refund. So far the blade is not chipping.

Hi J,

The more you learn about knives, the better Spyderco looks.

I didn't mean Spydie uses Paul.... Just to say that I have heard about s30v chipping in its earliest processing in every manufacturer except those that use Paul Bos... Not that he's perfect... just no reports of chipping.. I EDCd (for 6 years) one of the first S30V Sebbies that I never had a problem with.

I`m sorry i misunderstood,Does paul bos do the heat treating of the blades for spyderco?

No, he doesn't.

Paul is a great guy and he does good work, but we have an excellent heat treater that does our heat treating.

Was there a chipping problem with these blades at one time or has this been a rumor going around?

I`m thinking about buying a spyderco pacific salt,Could someone give me there own reviews on this knife before a make this purchase? Thanks for any reviews positive or negative personal experiences with this knife or Advise?

had a s30v native that I used, gave to my bro in law who beats on it constantly, no chipping, in fact, I just razor edged it onthe SM this past Sunday.

para s30v, no chipping
just sold off my caly3 so I could get a ukpk in s30v, dont expect chipping and MAN is it a scalpel.
also have a Kershaw leek in s30v, no chipping with that at all either.

most of my knives get used at work (cable installer) so they see everything from boxes to zipties to plastic to the outer layers of coax cable (outer coating and the foil and braid, never the center conductor)... No problems at all :)

Maybe spyderco corrected this problem.Because i have been doing some asking around and there has been some cases of this.Maybe you got a good one.

Perhaps. Or perhaps the "problem" was a matter of a few vocal people having expectations that S30V was not capable of living up to. Or perhaps a combination of both. Every high performance steel has some limitations. None are suitable for every purpose, and there are certainly purposes for which S30V is ill suited.

Some of the chipped blades i saw did nothing more than a few pieces of cardboard, if a blade cant handle that then somethings wrong with the blade.

JB, just about any steel you can name can chip-out due to misuse or a bad heat soak. The concept of S30V being more prone to chipping than any other steel is an urban myth.

I have a fair number of knives (mostly Spyderco) in S30V and I have found it to be both tough and wear resistant. As well, a few strokes on a hard Arkansas and you are back in business.

What else can you ask of a good steel?

I've never seen a chipped s30v blade yet. I own about ten knives with it. 7 of which are spyderco.

In regards to cardboard chipping s30v, lol. Maybe if you were opening a box full of diamonds or zdp-189.

Story time.....
I gave my father a Native. He isn't really a knife guy so I thought he wouldn't use it. So I hassled him every time I talked to him "You using that knife?" I'd ask. I saw him a month later and that Native looks about 3 years old now. I was sure he'd been cutting shingles with it or something. I didn't think s30v could dull that much lol.

Anyways, he had that thing dull as a marble. A shooter marble. (the big ones) In under a month, without a chip. I was also horrified to see him using it as a screwdriver to pop a window out of his house to load firewood in. Still no chips. ( And yeah, I advised him against it you could say, running towards him screaming NOOOOOO! Use a screwdriver!) I know he will do it again, when I'm not around. I love him anyways :)

I have a spyderco native and it hasn`t chipped yet and probably never will. My problem is i took a lot of this bad rap about the s30v as gospel. I guess you cant believe everything you hear.Until it actually happens to me.
