Spyderco?

But what a perfect excuse to talk about how great Spyderco is. How can we resist?
I guess you have a point there. Even a troll has its use, I guess. ;)

Anyway. I received my Citadel about a week ago and MAN, what a knife that is!! Don't usually like black blades much but I deliberately bought this one all black and it looks awesome. Handles well too.

Of course it's a new Spyderco, a good one, not the crappy old sh1tty quality Spyderco of the eighties...

To the credit of the OP, some of his latest posts indicate that he's open to the possibility that he was mistaken in his memory. Trolls stick to their guns after saying something ridiculous. The OP doesn't seem to be doing that.

The Spyderco 1 was the first folder with serrations. It was the first to have a pocket clip. It was the first to have one handed opening (I think.) It was of first class quality. Nothing has changed in these design principles or the quality of the product in its entire history. One thing I can promise you is that the first Spyderco was as good as the current ones and the current ones are as good as the first one. The founder of Spyderco is a serious knife knut. He wouldn't have any other way.

I'm a Spyderco collector. I have the first one and the latest one. ;)

Hi Cultivateitnow,

We've been called a lot of things from "Fugly" to "crazy", but never low quality, especially in the steel area.

Fixed blades have always been sporadic for us. We've never done really well with them and we've tried some really different designs ov er the years. We bring out different models periodically.

Our "basic" steels are VG-10 (Takefu), CPM-S30V (Crucible) and ZDP-189 (Hitachi). We also offer a variety of steels from different foundries, but in lesser amounts. We'll be using more Carpenter steels in our basic models in the future.

H1 is an interesting material. Different from "normal" steel, but excellent in corrosion resistance.

sal

Thanks Sal. Your H1 fixed salt really has me thinking and I don't believe I'm going to be able to pass it up. I really have no need for a salt water knife, but I want it.

After spending some time looking over your product I wondered if the fixed blade kinves just didn't fall in your product nitch. People have strong opinions about what a fixed blade should look like and which materials work best. I don't know that they are right but most only spend money on those that match what they believe to be true. The Aqua salt and the Temperance fit perfectly. I also like the Bushcraft blanks, but wish there was a version with a more open handle for para wrap. I've been buying a bunch of that style lately. Mostly because they are fun to play with and very easy to change the look and feel. In fact I purchased another just last night.

I'm looking forward to any new fixed blade designs or even different steels in the Salt or Temp you may introduce this year. Nice looking knives, both of them.

I dunno about the fixed blades, Spyderco may not do many of them, but I've drooled over 85% of the ones that they did do... the Perrin Street Beat, the Swick, the Hossom collaborations, the Bushcraft, the Temperance... man...

Just a thought, maybe Meyerco was the brand you were thinking of. Not trying to anger any Meyerco fans.

I remember going to a gun show with my Dad when I was a kid and the buzz was these new knives were very good, but strange looking. My Dad got a Endura in red and one in black. People did talk about the humped blade with the hole and the bright colors you could get, but I don't remember anything said about poor quality.

:D Yeah, but how about all the "crap" in between? Huh? What color is your kool-aid? :p

^ This has been a poor attempt at a joke. Carry on,

I only have two in the collection. The first one and the latest one. The ones in the middle have all been sold. ;)

Did you buy a Frost Spyderco knockoff by chance? The ones about the size of a Delica, with a thumbstud?

I've gotten some older Spydercos over the years, and they were well made IMHO.

I don't recall ever owning anything made by frost, but I cannot rule out a fake. My guess is that my memory must be clouded and I have somehint confused. My memory was pretty good at one time but all bets are off at this point. :)

I'm convinced I'm not remembering correctly. Is there a way to get this thread deleted so we can start one without the bad stuff in it?

requesting this thread be deleted.

Kinda like putting Humpty back together...anyway...not only does Spyderco make a lot of excellent quality knives, many of which are made right here in the US, they have been for a number of years one of the most innovative and experimentally-oriented knifemakers, bringing new premium steels to the knife market - and by the way, getting the heat-treat right where some of the companies you've mentioned as "better" consistently don't get it right...

I have the exact same experience, except that high quality was in fact a given from the start.

If you go back to the earliest models, today they would probably seem unimpressive, but at the time they were very high quality. People under 40-50 YO here often don't realize how the knife industry has changed in the last 20 years.

even as a kid around age of 8 or 10 could tell the difference. i had a a spyderco delica and think i had a syderco q and some random frost folders even as a kid cutting sticks , fruit and stabbing trees. lol now that im older i see they have gotten even better.

ps. im 22 and love my manix 2
