Spydercos are box opener childish idea cliff

Sebenza4ever,

Those are gorgeous! The last one, the Harpy with G10 scales, is making my mouth water.

For contrast and the sheer thrill of it, could you also post some pics of folding knives from Chris Reeve Knives? I know you're big on Sebenzas, but I'm sure you could find some Mnandis that'd make you blush if your significant other caught you ogling them.

While we're here agreeing that it'd be childish for Cliff to use Spyderco's Harpy, Civilian, and Kerambit knives as box cutters (and the height of infancy were he to use a Spyderhawk or Merlin or S-curved Meerkat), may I ask you some CRK trivia?

What cutlery-related job did Mr. Reeve have before manufacturing your favorite knife?

If you answered: "Distribute and sell Spyderco brand knives"; give yourself a star. Even Chris Reeve likes Spydercos. And Sal Glesser of Spyderco likes Sebenzas (and other Reeve knives) for that matter.

I just heard a sound like thunder off in the distance. It was Sebenza4ever's head exploding. :)

Oooooooh, BURN. That's gotta hurt.... :p

BTW have you actually handled/own these Spyderco? They are excellent-between BM and Spydie ,I just might go broke spending my hard-earned dollars on their "boxcutters" :D :D :D

I've tried to tell him/her (Sebenza4ever) that before, but he/she won't listen to reason. ;)

Thanks for the info, Thom! I wasn't aware of CR's prior job either, so thanks for sharing! :)

Cheers,

I hear that!

If Sebenza4ever thinks that those Spydies are "box cutters", wait until he/she discovers SuperKnife's line. :D

I have used really odd knives as box cutters before. One of the things I do constantly is use really unsuited knives for various tasks. A lot of the times I see "Use the right tool for the job." which is fine until you are in a situation where you only have one tool and a job needs done. What do you do then. Well I do what needs to be done because I have figured out from experience how to make do with less than optimal designs. I think a better mantra would be "Know how to use any tool to get the job done.".

I think your statement is semi valid. :)

While I think it's important that you should be versatile enough to make do with whatever is available when necessary I also think that the right tool should always be used whenever possible. Other than emergencies and other unexpected occurences, most people probably have a reasonable idea of what knife related tasks they might expect to encounter during the average day so they can arm themselves with the appropriate tool. If you're going out bush for a few days you would probably equip yourself with something more than a Spyderco Cricket.

(Sometimes pedantic arguments can be fun.)

Yeah part of using various tools is figuring out which ones you should have when you really need them.

Know how to make due with the widest amount of tools possible, including none, but prepare as best you can with ideal gear.

SAL ,

Great honour to have you here.

You make great knives.

Sorry to involve you in this argument between me and Cliff Stamp.

That was obviously a lie, as you once again attack Spyderco.

I figured that the proper tool for a job was usually either a knife or a Torx-driver. Guess that's why I'm not a neurosurgeon (I'm mean aside from the lack of medical education or average-to-higher level of steadiness in my hands)....

That mantra could create the niche-market of INFI or chromed S5 "sporks".

So let it be done!

I love sporks, man do they ever chew through concrete blocks. We should have a spork forum.

Have you been drinking or doing drugs Cliff? This is the second humorous thing I've seen from you today. Take it easy boy!

There's no need to get ugly!!

I was not knocking any CRKs, I was merely trying to explain the stupidity of referring to Spyderco's "hawkbills" as "box cutters", which they were not designed specifically for. It would be like referring to a Sebenza or Mnandi as a "pry-bar", which they were not designed for either (unless I'm missing something :D ).

Cheers,

Edited to add: Trane Fan, Sorry if I missed the the joke. I wanted to make sure I didn't offend you with my post, first and foremost.

No more than usual.

I was actually being serious, even Dark Ops is coming out with a line of sporks. Though I heard they ripped off Reeve because they used S30V.

Yeah. I'm a total newbie when it comes to which brand has better tine retention; which ones need Ren wax versus a few swipes with a dishrag; and what constitutes spork abuse.

Yeah, but do they have special blood grooves?

Blood grooves are critical, for ease of materials consuption, you need a smooth release before mastication can commence.

They will also feature :

-bone breaking notches, a saw back
-serrations (two kinds!!!)
-range finders in the handle
-a indent for a fire drill
-the end is hardened and sharp for a bowl scraper
-one side is mirror polished for use as a signaling device

They are awesome, they will cost $385 for the large and $330 for the small.

Yeah and then you have the forged vs stock removal sporks, stainless vs carbon sporks, dendritic/wootz sporks for the high carbide aggression and of course custom vs production sporks. Forget the forum, we need a dedicated spork web site, each of these deserves their own sub forum.
