Spydercos Are Weird Looking!

Spydercos Are Weird Looking!

Nah dude, nah :)

I was just thinking a few days a go how cool looking my little dragon looked. I like all the lines and swoops, texture, contours and the hole.

I thought they looked weird at first, too. Then I bought one and "got it". My Spyderco collection continues to grow, and I love their knives more the more I use them. Nowadays I consider many of them to be among the most beautiful knives on the market.

...some are just plain fugly...the Jot Singh Khalsa, whoa!!! At the very least it is a "weird looking". :D

This is exactly what I think of when people start talking 'weird looking' Spydercos. :D

I think having Spyderco introduced to me as my first 'real' brand set me up to appreciate so many different types and styles of knife...as opposed to being introduced to a more tradition brand. I really believe that no one brand has a monoply on the best designs/styles/materials/features. I own Benchmades (2), CRKT (1), Cold Steels (3), Kershaw (1), Emerson (1) and Mora (1)...but more Spyderco than anything else (20) because I feel Sal and company just 'get it right' more often than most companies. That being said, there's a lot of Spydercos that don't do anything for me. To each his own.

Bottom line, there's so much good stuff out there, and it's getting better by the year!! :D

spyderco sure offers the best functionality, quality at the best price. I'd do wish their warranty was on par with the competition...although I bet their business numbers are tighter then them. (ie zt & benchmade)

I agree that some designs at first glance look weird....but Spyderco is one of the rare companies that aren't afraid to diversify, invest in R&D and create new products based on form and functionality that rarely disappoint. They never have boring designs, and they collaborate with some of the best designers and knife makers on the planet. The end results work even though they may be "strange" or weird looking. The diversity may not often work for sales, but they work for me!

We need more pics btw...

You know a Spyderco when you see one. Remember the Stallone movie Cliffhanger. I think that was the first movie to showcase Spydercos one handed opening. Very novel at the time.

I've always thought Spyderco made a good knife, but avoided buying one because they just look so "un-traditional", for lack of a better description.

I finally bought my first, a Yojimbo 2 two months ago. I'm an old phart & not easily impressed, but I liked how well thought out & just plain useable the Spyderco designs are. Since then have bought two more. A PM2 & a Manix 2. There'll likely be one or two more added as time goes on.

I still think they look weird, though.:)

I feel the same although I own three. Sal Glesser (owner and ceo) said "Spydercos are designed for the hand, not the eye".

Well do you buy a knife to use or just to look at?

Spyderco makes a wide variety of knives- some of them look different, maybe some of the do look weird, but they work great. They have pushed out all of my more traditional looking knives because they work better than the more traditional looking knives.

Nerfin, I like your selection. Some great choices.:thumbup:

And for the thread:

Can't find another company out there with so much variety to keep me smiling.

Thanks Speedholes! Wow, you have some amazing Spydies as well....so many interesting designs!

I do not have my first Spydie any longer. It was a first edition Viele. I loved the look right off. I traded it away, however, as it was so slick, and no guard, so my finger slipped onto the blade in use. I did not buy one for a few years, as they were kinda weird but functional looking. I started having issues with all these companies and their blade to handle ratio nonsense and the handles were getting smaller and no longer fitting my hand, and never if I had gloves. I picked up a Delica and that was it for me. I never looked back.

one of my first real folding knives was a spyderco Delica I got at a gun show....carried it for years, bought a first edition Civilian when they first came out and carried it EVERYWHERE.... eventually lost it when the rubber inserts crapped out on me and it had no pocket retention anymore.... bought a stainless police to replace it... then eventually a G10 civilian...just last night ordered a Szabo...my first new Spyderco in almost 20 years.

I like em, but its taken me awhile to come back to the brand after that police....I carried it less than 3 months and the lockback started giving way.... its now totally useless, was a lot of money back in the day for something that crapped out on me so quickly and I've never really gotten over it.

Back in the days the manufacturing Tolerance weren't as good as modern days, the materials used aren't as advanced as well, but they shouldn't fail , they should still function especially the locks, the design of the mentioned knives are very reliable and sturdy and the chance of them fail under their normal intended use (to cut things) are almost none existent.

I think in both cases Spyderco would have fix or replace the knife if they were defective especially it was only a few month old if you send it in.

Thought so for years also. But after using one it was all over. Now I have a drawer full of them and just when I think I'm done buying anymore Sal has a new steel or model I can't resist.

I got 3 words for ya " functionality over form " ! These knives are Damn functional. In an emergency situation which would you have ? A good knife. Or a good LOOKING knife ?
Besides they Look unique. Spyderco's unique designs are what sets them apart from the average knife :)

As in 'weird shapes & ideas that might look strange on the design board but happen to work superbly in practice'? Sure, it's a concept called innovation and to Spyderco it's something like a second skin.

Just take a look at the weird locks they've put out there, and I'm not even talking about conservative stuff like liner, back, compression, ball bearing, integral, notch joint, bolt action or power - but about bi-fold, phantom lock, magnet and modified bali.

Same with the shapes. A bit of everything for everyone, maybe, but all of them feeling 'right' once you get to hold & use them.
