Spydercos that you loved the looks of, but found didn't fit you well....

Hello everybody! I think this is my first post here on BF, I have been on the Spyderco forum for a while (username shifty.... man I wish I could change that name) and finally signed up here recently. Very cool site!

I think for a lot of us, Spyderco dealers can sometimes hard to find so we end up ordering online, without handling a knife first to see how it actually fits. In other words, a lot of the time we just purely by looks of a knife.

So my questions is.... what knives, did you think looked totally awesome, and expected you would absolutely love, but changed your mind about once you bought, or handled?

Could be for a number of reason... like blade style just didn't work for your EDC needs, found either the blade or overall knife to big or too small, didn't like ergos of the blade or handle, didn't like handle or blade materials, etc etc...

Thanks

i havent had that happen yet. but the only thing that i dont like about my paramilitary is that it does carry pretty wide in the pocket. but that is minor.

I really liked the looks of the CF Sage, but it just did not fit right or feel right in my hand. Maybe if it was just a tad longer things would be different.

Yes, that has happened to me several times. Naming them would be pointless. What works for me may very well not work for you, and what doesn't work for me may turn out to be the best fitting knife you ever purchase.

There were few knives, which I liked how they look, bought them, didn't like and sold them. Remember a few:Cento3 (I didn't like handle to blade ratio), Kershaw Nakamura (i didn't like style of bolsters), Ti/ZDP Mini cyclone-I didn't like ergos.

Deacon.... I know exactly what you mean, but I think you may have gotten the wrong idea. My intent for this thread was not to use what others found didn't work for them and apply that towards a purchase decision for myself, so don't worry :D

Just a fun, and random discussion.

Para-military, just didn't like the look of the thing in person so I left it at the store. :p

Welcome to the forums Mumbles! Good to see another member from the great north!

I bought a Lava a few years ago. Great knife for someone with smaller hands, but it felt odd to me.
The Poliwog on the other hand is a masterpiece. Probably the best little big knife design I've ever used.
I'd EDC one if it had a ZDP-189 blade.

The one that comes to mind would have to be the Endura 4 in stainless steel.

I love the look of it. Very nice quality knife, just not as much in love with it as I thought I would be.

I hadn't thought about weight before I got it and it is heavier than I would like. I also didn't think about how easily it would smudge due to my greasy fingers fondling it. Lastly, the scales seem to show scratches very easily, and this one surprised me a bit.

I continue to love the looks of it, but I don't carry it so much. I keep it looking nice so I can use it as an emergency mirror to check my teeth for spinach and such;).

I am fortunate to live relatively close to GPKnives so I don't have to do the mail order thing. I have had this happen many times though where I was really excited about a knife I had seen online only to be unimpressed for whatever reason when I actually had it in hand. There are several amungst different brands that I have had this experience with.

That said there are plenty I have stumbled across that I would probably not have considered had I not had the chance to see and handle them in person.

i've had the opposite happen to me

I hate the look of a caly 3 but i just love the ergo's, now i'm torn on what to do with it

My reason for starting this thread was that I 'intend' to buy a UKPK, Urban, and G-10 Dragonfly next month.... and I will be bummed if I don't end up liking them once they are in hand. Due to the fact that I absolutely LOVE the looks of the UKPK and Urban, and in theory they just seem perfect. Not to mention that amazing orange G-10!

Boatsman.... I am in the same boat :D. I bought a CF Sage, haven't used it yet as it's still a safe queen. The fit and finish are superb, the CF scales are super nice, lockup is like a tank, love the wire clip... everything about it is just top notch.... but it just doesn't pique my interest. Can't quite figure out why.

The M4 Gayle Bradley suits me perfectly, if only it were made in the USA.

Cool design from a talented Texan.:o

I had to pass.

Going back a bit but... the Lil' Temp really didn't fit my hands well at all. Neither did the Salsa (Ti) I had. So I sold or traded both away. Now the Millie - up to 8 and counting :D.

The Gayle Bradley was the first I ordered without trying first. I was so sure I was going to love it, but it hasn't happened yet- the handle seems a bit too big and heavy. Still giving it a chance to grow on me, but...

It happens to me pretty regularly. It's the price I pay for living away from the massed hordes and gang violence. The ones most people seem surprised by are the Barong, Persian and Lum Chinese. All seem to get great reviews and none of them fit my hands.

TazKristi has changed several forum names on the factory forums. If you ask nicely (after SHOT) she might change yours as well.

The Native. Yes I own a couple, but I don't like the obscured hole. The choil doesn't do a lot for me either. Still pocket carry one once in a while, but I don't clip it at all. After all these years it doesn't make sense to clip a knife that I use two hands to open.

Wicked! Thanks for the tip. I will ask her in a couple weeks when all the SHOT craziness has subsided.

I found the Delica a bit big in the pocket. Currently I love carrying my G10 Dragonfly because the size and ergo are perfect for me.

Odds.... I am finding myself leaning towards the smaller knives more and more as well. I have a couple Lava's which I completely love. Most of my "To Buy" list consists of sub 3" Spydies such as the Dragonfly, Ladybugs (would kill for an orange one), Cricket, Chicago, Cat, Navigator II, and Urban. The more pics and videos I see of the UKPK the more I feel it might be a little big for my EDC needs.

There's just something about the smaller folders that I really like. They're just so handy, light, and easy to manipulate. I am a minimalist, so I hate having more of anything than I need, blade/handle length included.
