Spydercos that you loved the looks of, but found didn't fit you well....

Cricket. Nice and compact, just didn't care for the blade shape. I think I'm one of the few spyderco fans that would just prefer a wharncliffe or hawkbill to the S curve blades.

Eh. The Cricket's blade is more of a pregnant wharncliffe than a real reverse S like the Civilian. That's another reason why it hasn't really worked for me... all I end up using on it is the tip, not the rounded parts of the edge.

Same here. On the Dodo and Cricket the belly part never made sense to me.

The FRN Endura was the one for me. Loved the look of it, but was not a big fan of the knife. Too big and did not not like the way the grip felt in my hands.

Now the Tenacious and Persistence blew me away. Could not believe how much quality you get for that price.

Which Prov do you hail from in Canuckistan Mumbles?

SJD1... I live in Ontario. Where do you do most of your Spyderco shopping?

My hands are right in between medium and large and I feel like Spyderco uses my hands to design most of their handles. I have yet to find a Spydie that doesn't work for me. At least none that I've bought.

I've kept away from the bigger folders as I prefer small to medium sized knives. I know people consider the Military one of the absolute best but I just don't see myself needing something that big. My Endura's don't get any carry time so anything that size and over sits at home.

Aesthetically, I'm still trying to like my Persian, it fits fine but the blade shape is still a little odd to me. I also passed on the Rock Salt due to the shape.

I live just north of Collingwood, so wind up doing most of my shopping on the web at Warriors and Wonders, Jay is excellent to deal with. If I lived closer to Toronto (and luckily I don't ;) ) I would probably be at S&R knives quite a bit. How 'bout you?

I really liked the idea and looks of the Yojimbo, but found it angular, too straight, boxy, and overly long.

As far as selling off my Delica (and Sebbie, and Izula), I still think that it means there must be something wrong with me. I have normal hands, normal pants, common knife interests, and normal EDC/outdoor needs.

It just didn't feel good in my hand! There is nothing wrong with the knife or design.

Whoa! No reason to get excited lol :D I was just asking, as I have never handled one before, and it's a model that interests me. But not at the price they are selling for now.

SJD1.... I have bought everything from S&R so far, and plan stick with them as Rodney has been super helpful, and is lightning fast with the email replies.

Lil Temp, Rock lobster, leaf storm.

The Tempie & Lobster was due to the handle not liking my hands and the Leaf because of the kick & lack of a choil (kept biting me).

I really liked the looks of the CF Sage, but it just did not fit right or feel right in my hand. Maybe if it was just a tad longer things would be different.

I have the Sage and it's my favorite blade out of about 12 folders that I own. If there's one thing that I would change, it would be to remove the blade choil, extend the cutting edge along the full length of the blade, and make the handle a little longer.

As it is often I find myself using the handle's choil instead of the blade's, which works great.

It's not really an issue, other than to say that a 3 1/2" cutting edge on the Sage would be my next Spydie.

That's the same thing that deterred me from getting a Leaf Storm too. As much as I like the blade design, I'm not at all crazy about the handle shape. That sharp edge at the end of the blade looks like it can do some serious damage if your hand were to slide up the handle. I ended up going with the G10 Dragonfly instead.

D'Allara. The first time I saw it in a magazine I had to have it. The blade shape looked so useful and I liked the idea of the ball lock. After gathering up some money, I went to a knife shop intent on buying it... until I handled it.

I know a lot of people like it, but I have never handled a knife that felt so completely wrong in my hand as that one. I can't point to just one thing about that knife that was wrong... the entire package just wasn't for me.

I can't even see pictures of it now without feeling a sense of irritation. I still like the blade shape, but that handle was just wrong wrong wrong. :barf:

Oh well.

I tend to sit on the other side of the fence where knives I initially thought ugly end up being my favorite users. This has taught me not to buy working tools based on how they looked, rather than on how they perform. That's not always that easy though when your unable to handle one first due to living over the other side of the world....
The only Spydie which has never worked for me in hand is the Native, and the only Spydie I've ever purchased purely on looks is a Mini Persian :).
The Rock lobster is another I'm really eager to get, although I have my doubts that it will work in hand for me. I'm still hesitant at spending that amount without handling one first.

bo.

- Mumbles

that's easy!
the spyderco C84
it looked great in picture form.
hands on, it was a different story.
could just be that my fingers and palm was ill suited to it's largely wide 'n flat handle profile.
even considered having my entire hand run over by a steam roller just so as to elongate the short digits...not!

The one that readily comes to mind is the old Shabaria model. When I had 2 of that model in my collection I really loved to get it out and handle it. However about 2 years ago by a real stroke of luck I got a used one by trade and thought it would be a great Every Day Carry.

Once I carried that knife for about a week I didn't like it anymore. The hour glass design of the handle got to feeling really strange when I would actually use it as a pocket knife. I even found hard to manipulate with. My first impressions of the knife really deceived me and that doesn't happen very often.

In the future the Shabaria model will be nothing more than a collecting piece for me.

So far it has happened with two models: the Caly3 CF and the Sage 2. Don't get me wrong, I really like these two knives, but there are some issues that are letdowns.

Caly3 CF: great shape and size, wicked edge, but the outer layers of the laminated blade are too soft and scratch easily, especially at the tang due to friction with the liners (tried every type of lubricant I could lay my hands on to no avail). From a favorite knife, it became a real eyesore in 4 or 5 months of carry, too ugly for EDC. If it wasn't for the scratches, this would be THE favorite Spydie for EDC.

Sage 2: great knife in every aspect... except I cannot get over the RIL. Got it for Xmas and have been EDCing it since. But the RIL is just not for me: it is aesthetically displeasing (the cut in the locking handle make it unsightly) and just feels wrong in my hand (there is loss of purchase in the open position, the locking side just feels wrong). I'll continue to EDC it for a while to see if those issues can be overcome, because I like everything else about this knife.

Persian (c83). It was so cool, but when i took it in local shop, handle turned out too tight for my hand:( It upset me, but i reached compromise - bought it for my wife:). She always likes Persian and it was a gift time to her graduation from university. Since then it is her EDC and i can play with it too:)

The native is mean looking small knife. If only the handle did not block the thumb hole or if the thumb hole was bigger.
