Spydercos that you loved the looks of, but found didn't fit you well....

That has happened to me with the Lil' Temp, Dodo, both origninal Manixes, and the Police 3. Luckily, Spyderco's ergonomics work both ways, so I still have the Manix 2, Superhawk, D4, and Zowada.

the mini persian. it had a good price at a local shop wanted to SO bad because its such a looker but it just didnt feel quite right. TO ME. i overcame my lust and some other lucky person got it within a week.

Doesn't that suck? You want it to work SO BAD, but it just won't. I considered surgery to make my hand fit the Dodo's handle.

I sold my Police 3 specifially because I didn't care for how it felt in my hand.

Unfortunately it felt too long and thin in my grip.

So my questions is.... what knives, did you think looked totally awesome, and expected you would absolutely love, but changed your mind about once you bought, or handled?

Not looks exactly but there are features I don't mind on some knives that drive me nuts on others. I have a list of things I prefer and things I don't. A new knife has to make "most" of the "prefer" list but even at that there are things that work okay on some and not on others.

By way of example, I really REALLY prefer deep carry wire clips but the Manix 2 clip works fine. It's pretty deep for a standard style clip, I guess. Would I prefer it were a wire? Definitely. But the current clip works okay for me. Same with blade shape. I really like FFG drop points but the Manix 2 blade is excellent! (did I mention I really like the S90V FFG Manix 2?? ;-)

Anyway, you're right, buying anything as personal as a knife without holding it, carrying it, maybe even using it is, at best, a gamble.

Cheers,

Ken

The spyderco para military was a little big in my pocket. I liked the knife, but for EDC it is not for me. For a work knife I'm sure it would do way better than my current EDC which is the native. It's egros, lock, jimping and choil really makes it stick to your hand. I think it could be a good duty knife for an LEO or active duty military.

For me it was the Paramilitary. I bought the D2 version and loved the way it looked, yet I hadn't been able to handle one beforehand. It's just uncomfortable and small for my meathooks. Now it's been relegated to my glove box.

The only Spyderco I didn't like enough to keep was the CF Native 4. Hole sat too deep to open comfortable, action was gritty, and didn't care for the clip.

Cricket and MicroDyad are both uncomfortable for me to hold, but look gorgeous. Para took a while for me to warm to, but that's mostly because of the tip-down only clip.

I really liked the looks of the CF Sage, but it just did not fit right or feel right in my hand. Maybe if it was just a tad longer things would be different.

Same here! Still sad about giving that one up, but it never felt just right.

i've had the opposite happen to me

I hate the look of a caly 3 but i just love the ergo's, now i'm torn on what to do with it

KInd of the same for me. I've seen pics of the various Caly models over the years but didn't care for them. Then the Caly3 came out and looked like it had a much better finish with the G10, etc, although I still didn't care for the shape. Finally I took the plunge and ordered one around Nov and have been loving it so much I bought a second as a backup 2 weeks ago(since they've been discontinued). It's now in my pocket most days except when I switch it for my G10 Dragonfly.

I desperately wanted a Rock Lobster, but the grip was designed for folks with larger hands than mine. :o

The Lum Chinese may be the best looking production folder (IMO), but its "big at the front, small at the back" shape makes it sorta want to shoot out of your hand like a banana being emancipated from a banana peel.

If that makes sense.

Great looking knife, though.

The FRN Endura was the one for me. Loved the look of it, but was not a big fan of the knife. Too big and did not not like the way the grip felt in my hands.

Now the Tenacious and Persistence blew me away. Could not believe how much quality you get for that price.

Which Prov do you hail from in Canuckistan Mumbles?

Endura too. Sabre grind not too good a cutter. I blame my Manix for this.

Poliwog in Stainless was originally an investment (buy now to sell in future for increased price... Hopefully) but became EDC. God, the ergos it is like making love to my hands :)

The Paramilitary & the Manix II for me.The ergos & blade were excellent as always with Spyderco.I just couldn't get used to the locking mechanisms.Same thing with the D'Allara.

Delica 4. First Spyderco I owned. Did not like the ergos much and found the blade cut poorly compared to my swiss army knives. Endura 4 never felt right in my hands either, though I like the 3.

Cricket. Nice and compact, just didn't care for the blade shape. I think I'm one of the few spyderco fans that would just prefer a wharncliffe or hawkbill to the S curve blades. That's why I own the Spin, which fits my hands better anyways despite being smaller. Got rid of the Dodo I had for similar reasons.

The Bob Lum folder is really pretty, but just didn't feel secure in my hand. For a gents style folder I'd prefer the Caly line. Granted I didn't ever try using this one, so maybe real use would of changed my view on it.

I'm glad Spyderco produces such a variety of designs. Pretty easy to come across one that will work for you.
