My 4570 would drop him for sure. I also have a nice .54cal smoke pole and have a photo of a full sized American Bison that was charging a black powder hunter. The hunter shot the brute at about 30 feet and the ball flipped that buff backwards off his hoofs:eek: Got to love the power of that old stuff;).

Here is the photo of the old Buff going down!

We went shooting 2 weeks ago, and my sons had a blast(literally) shooting a 45-70, packs a wallup & punches a hole......and I like stag:D

I'd say he had one shot and if it didn't do the trick, the situation was going to get unpleasant real fast.

Flat,Anything from the 06 to .338 Win.Mag. will get the job done on any of these brutes posted. Then what Buck knife would you want by your side to finish the job?DM

Actually, stag is the antler from ANY deer, not just European deer. One of the most dense and durable types is that from the Sambar deer. Stag is NOT farmed, it is collected. Deer lose their antlers every year. A deer's diet determines the density of its antlers. The more mineral rich a deer's diet, the bigger and denser the rack. A hunter you are not!

There are deer (even European red deer) and elk farms all across the country. They do provide a source of antler material for many different uses.

Now that's a good question David. If'n I was fortunate enough to need to skin an animal the size of that red stag I'd go into it with these two.

So David what do you think of my choices? I could have made a number of others but I think I would be very pleased with these two's performance in cutting and edge holding on what would be a big job.

You are correct that good diet makes for better mass on any animals antlers. The rest of what you said Sir...you know NOT of what you speak esp. your reference to David Martin's abilities as a Hunter.

When I first glanced at the pic, I thought the Buff was sitting back on his hauches giving out a huge guffaw 'cause the hunter was afield with something other than a Winchester '95 Big Medicine.

The original post was what is stag? Not what factors contribute to antler size.Must be the moon phase enhancing arrogance in this.
Say what you, like but photos have been posted here of deer I've taken.DM

Flat,Yes I like those knife choices.I'd to would go w/ a drop point for skinning/field dressing and something like a 121 for quartering.DM

"... tell me how a supposed experienced hunter does not know what factors contribute to antler size..."

Well Sir, I rarely rise to the bait, but I got to give an amen to brother Flat right here. I don't know didly squat about what goes into the making of a horn, antler, or whatever you call it. Not only do I not know, I don't care. Other than making sure its legal, the hat that a deer is wearing is the last thing on my mind when making the shoot/don't shoot decision. I realize that some folks hunt horn, and I don't belittle them at all, in fact, I'm glad they are doing what makes 'em happy, but I hunt meat. We got deer fallin' all over each other and a real good season and bag limit (2 a day) and the population is still growing. To me the idea is to put some meat on the tables of some of the oldsters, and struggling families around here. All of the Pastors know who has the need, and when I tell them that I got some venison to share, I have yet to be asked how many points did it have. About the only question I do get asked is if'n its ground up or in chunks. Moms like the chunks for roasting, and the seniors like the ground (with some hog added) as its easier to chew. So fling a rock at me if you wish, maybe I ain't a real hunter cause I don't measure up to the high standard that you hold to, but you might reflect a little that everyone is different. The important thing is that I always use a Buck knife to do the dressin', and if the handle is horn, antler or plastic, it don't affect the cuttin' none.

Then please tell me how a supposed experienced hunter does not know what factors contribute to antler size. Unlike the great majority, I will put my money where my mouth is. MY experience is not out of a magazine.

Well here is David Martin pretending NOT to be a hunter. I doubt your wallet is as big as your mouth.
