Stainless steel fixed blade

Cool lets swap Schf26s and see.

That would be a hard one for me. The scales are pretty chewed up on mine now, and I am in the middle of modding the sheath to a snap retention strap. I hate that Velcro strap. I'd hate to have to re profile another one, that recurve blade is a PITA to profile!

Right on, I've never turned down an opportunity to learn something new.

However, out of all the 8cr13mov knives I've ever sharpened or used, all have been the same performance regardless of the edge geometry.

Maybe yours is different.

Until I try yours out, I'm not drinking the koo-aid hahaha

If you're doing something right, then maybe with even stronger steel it would be even MORE right. It wouldn't be over-paying for the same performance, it would be paying more for even BETTER log-batoning power!

We had our conversation. If he seen fit to fix anything I said he would have. So what's your point?
Hi Boris,

I can see that you like and appreciate blade steels. That's good. Most don't have a clue. I think you are a "little serrated around the edges", with you communication style, but if you hang around long enough, I believe you will soften. Most folks here try to share knowledge as opposed to arguing......most, but not all.

I think that it would be difficult for me to come to many conclusions about a foundry's steel with just one bad experience.
As mentioned, there are other possibilities. Crucible spend a great deal of time and money to try to develop better steels. They also work closely with many factories and custom makers in developing those steels. To just assume that your one example was bad and that the type of steel is bad is not fair to the foundry or those involved in developing the steel.

The only real way to find out what's going on is to send it to Spyderco. They can determine if it is in fact a real one, as opposed to counterfeit, It can be tested, chemically analyzed and conclusions reached which will be shared here.

You can send it to:

That's all. Have a nice evening.

Boris74 have you considered using a log sword?

Mora or Helle would be good choices

Also something from Boker Plus in 440c

Ohh, good point. The Boker plus Bushcraft XL is a pretty good blade. 440c, 4 3/8in blade, orange handles, and a kydex sheath. Not sure if they make a larger version though.

Actually the buck reaper is 420

Yes it is, I mistook that. I was thinking Hood Reaper but the reaper isn't part of the hood line. Actually it's a nice blade, makes me wonder why Buck wouldn't make the Selkirk in the USA.

i like Morakniv companions. cheap price so u dont gotta worry about losin em, but dont feel like a wallmart knife either.

Anybody handled cds survival knives before i just found them on amazon and they look perfect.nice sheath good blade geometry etc. I just have no idea what mv58 steel is and reviews of them are in other languages since the companies spanish

Holy thread hijack, guys. Meanwhile . . .

I honestly expected them to be an Amazon "sponsored" brand, considering the product descriptions. In any case, the only references to that steel that I could turn up (in English) in Google all pointed back to the knife ads, either on Amazon or on other websites I was unfamiliar with. None were sites I would buy from personally. Now, it's entirely possible that these are fine knives, but without much info aside from what's found in ads, I'd spend my $100 on a brand I was familiar with. As far as Spanish knives are concerned, there is far more info available on Muela. Anyone can do a nice-looking leather sheath and micarta scales these days. My wife bought me a ridiculous MTech "survival machete" with a fairly nice leather sheath and micarta scales, and I'll put it through its paces, but my point is that those aren't evidence of a good knife.

For a multi-purpose knife in potentially wet conditions, I think it would be wise to go with a proven stainless steel. I would expand the search to two knives, though, as there are definitely cases where 5" will be unwieldy. Maybe a small fixed blade or folder, even a neck knife, for light duty cutting? Or maybe something like the Cold Steel Peace Maker II, which has a 5.5" 4116 Krupp blade (Cold Steel uses this steel frequently) and a very Mora-esque blade shape, sheath, etc.

The steel is called MOVA-58, hardened to 56-58. Other than the steel being molybdenum-vanadium I never heard of a steel called MOVA-58. Maybe one of the board experts can weigh in. The knife I was looking at was called Combatone from SDS Survival. Not a bad looking blade, probably more than what MAkives is after.
Makives, since your on amazon also check out the Gerber Strongarm, it is made of 420 stainless and after seeing the gauntlet beatings it took over on youtube, I don't think you could go wrong.

Hey guys im lookingbfor a good stainless steel knife for when i go somewhere really humid and just want that much more rust resistance.or when im kayaking or canoeing for really long periods of time.my preferred length is a blade over 5", budget is under 100. And ive been wondering i dont want to force a patina on my knives how do you tell if it has a natural patina
I can say point blank, I have never gotten so much as a speck of rust or staining on either of the knives (both models I own) that a fellow forumite is selling here.

The Master Hunter is my go to field dressing knife. I usually just leave it in a bucket of water after a hunt, until I get home. Never have gotten any rust.

The SRK would probably fit your description best. Honestly, if I did not already own both of these knives, I would have bought these.

Im willing to pay a little over 100. 120 is the most i will pay. For the knife itself extra shipping and stuff is fine

Ive noticed the buck frontiersman but am hesitant since its a hollow grind because i like my knives to be able to baton decently and dont know if its a shallow of deep hollow grind
