Stan Shaw Gets His First Penknife

Some how I had missed this fine tread and very glad that you brought it up to see but also somber feeling that your friend is at rest now, but will always be remembered by such a friend as you
Thanks for your telling and allowing us to sit beside you as introduce your friend to us

Jack Black Jack Black Thank you for bumping this. It was a great pleasure to read, and I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend. The beautiful knife that he made you that day, has been lifted to the heavens. Thank you for sharing, I hope you know that his memory, with your help, has touched another person, from across the pond. RIP

I remember this! Was wonderful read then and again now!

I'm sorry Jack for the loss of your friend. And also the loss of a true old world Cutler. I'm sure he'll be greatly missed.

Thank you very much gents, I'd actually forgotten about this thread myself

I thought I'd give this thread a bump for newer members who won't have seen it before.

RIP Stan
What a nice read, again!! Thanks for bringing back these memories, Jack!! You are blessed to have had such a warm friendship with a Talented man, who spoke your Yorkish language!!:D I'm sure I'd be lost with my Canadian/American lingo!!
He sure made some beautiful knives - wish I still had this one!!:(StanShawWhittler.jpg
But I still have this one - carrying it today!!:)Stan RIP 1.jpg

For someone with my rapidly fading memory, it's nice to have these threads here too Charlie :) You'd have been fine my friend, Stan had friends all over the world, like me, but still, it was nice when there were just the two of us, and we could both speak Yorkish, like you never hear Stan speak in all those videos :D ;) That's a wonderful Wharncliffe Whittler Charlie, just gorgeous. I saw Stan produce many exquisite knives, but they were all spoken for. I consider myself lucky to have the few I have. I wish I'd have had a chance to show Stan this one, which I think must have been made either by him or Ted Osborn, but was made before they started putting the cutler's initials on the liners. There's nobody left I can ask now unfortunately, and I'd have loved Stan to see this knife :)

I'm glad you have that lovely classic Sleeveboard :) I would have asked Stan to make me that pattern next I think. Tomorrow, I'm going to carry my Sheepsfoot, which is the first knife he made me :)

You are fortunate to have that nice Sheepfoot, Jack!! From the Mester's hands to yours!!
And that pearl sure looks like his work!! It's got a lot of his hallmarks!!
I think that Wharncliffe above went back to England - maybe you will see it one day! It has an amazing rainbow of colors in the handles!!

My condolences to you Jack, and to other friends and family of Stan Shaw. May he Rest In Peace.

Though your writing about Stan’s position in the pantheon of Little Mesters, and your write-ups of personal visits with Stan, I kind of felt like I got to know him from a distance. I can think of no finer tribute for Stan than you translating your visits into writing, so that many of us can carry a bit of his memory in our hearts and minds.

Thank you for these very kind words Robb, I'm touched :) I'm glad that I was able to share the times I spent with Stan here, he would have been very touched by the tributes here

Condolences to you Jack.
Always enjoyed reading what you wrote of Stan and watching any footage of him also. Seemed a lovely man, one who was happy to be at work, a rare thing that and it showed in his work.
Two lifetimes chalked down in his industry and from reading on him I doubt he ever regretted the path he undertook when knocking on Ibbersons door all those years ago.
R. I. P. Stan and my thoughts to his family.
I shall use my Ibberson Lobster tomo in his memory.

Thank you mate :)

A short obituary by Stan's longstanding friend and biographer, Geoffrey Tweedale, was published today.

This coachman’s number... WOW

Thanks Jack !!

Spectacular isn't it? I've just spent the last 5 minutes 'gawping' at it again myself. Just incredible

Such a tragedy that Sheffield Museums don't have a single one of Stan's knives on display anymore. They used to, but took them off display a few years back, something which hurt Stan a lot :(

That’s terrible! As that one specifically should be on exhibition. IMHO.

They have a bunch of fantastic exhibition grade knives of Stan's, which people donated or loaned to the museum. But they didn't do that so they could gather dust in a cupboard somewhere. You'd think Sheffield Museums would have organised a Stan Shaw EXHIBITION while he was still alive, or have a whole gallery of his knives, but they never have
