Stan Shaw is still making very fine traditional knives, I have recently been lucky enough to acquire a few really nice examples, two of which have just arrived back from being engraved.

Here's the first one, a 4 3/4" stockman's knife, chunky lignum vitae handle coverings, milled brass liners, carbon steel blades/articles. The blades open and close with very strong snap. The backsprings are fileworked inside and out. The off set nickel silver bolsters have been beautifully engraved by Simon Lytton. A very heavy knife.

Thanks for the positive responses guys .

Stan still works a couple of days a week at his Kelham Island workshop, he's now been making pen and pocket knives for nearly seventy years !, taken on as an apprentice, working under Ted Osborne at Ibbersons in 1942 a "premier" double ended cutler at the famous firm C1950-51.

Stan makes knives, their parts made using primitive tools, tin snips, hacksaw, files, a pillar drill etc, at a deceptively fast speed, the number of knives he makes is quite astonishing, on my last visit he had quite a few knives part made, they included at least a dozen senators, a sunfish, a large folding Bowie, a 5 1/2" six bladed Congress, a large 6" 4 thick coachman's knife and two gold exhibition knives, amazing !.

The sportsman's (above) was one of a batch of four made, the other three were handled in buffalo horn.

Mick, what a beautifull knife!
Once again, thank you very much for showing us what true Sheffield quality is.
Knowing, and being able to visit his workshop, and spending time with Stan must be an incredible experience, I always look forward to your threads, where we can learn, drool and dream :)

Delighted you like the sportsman's Duncan ..:D

Here's the second knife I received back from Simon Lytton, a Stan Shaw sunfish, 4 1/4" closed, cocabolo handle coverings, nickel silver shield and superbly engraved bolsters. The blades are 1/4" thick, a lot of work must have gone into their making, how they fit into such a tight space when closed is beyond belief, they walk and talk perfectly.

Simon is a marvellous engraver, his work definitely elevates this knife above the ordinary, love it.

Another dormant thread brought back to life. The beauty of doing this is we get to take another look at some astonishing work by Stan Shaw, courtesy of Mick!
Duncan and Jack had the good luck to meet the man himself (Stan), as he graciously interrupted his sandwich to have a nice talk with them.

There are about 10 of my local knife friends who I meet with once a month.
We "show and tell" and often trade/buy/sell knives, needless to say. I was lucky enough to trade for this Ibberson Lobster today, made by Stan back in the 1950s!
How do I know when it was made?? You will soon find out!
Here is a picture, along side a "boiled" Barlow, for scale. I must say, the Lobster eyed his neighbour's reddish carapace a little nervously!:D

The knife is quite plain, compared to Mick's beauties at the start of this thread, but is wonderful in its own right. Knurled liners, and the absolute best grade of pearl - dazzling in person, and hand hammered pins which give the knife an old-time flavour. I would never even think of hammering near Pearl,
especially at today's prices.
And here is how you tell the age of an Ibberson/Shaw!

Funny, when I got up close with my magnifying glass, I swore I could smell Marmalade!;)

Absolutely beautiful Charlie. You lucky, lucky gentleman! :)

:D

I was looking at a few of Stan's knives on sale in Sheffield today - a brief ray of sunshine in an otherwise thoroughly rotten day!

Jack

Might mean it is an older knife, made by 'P' ?!
It is a great knife!

Thanks Charlie. I'll have to ask Stan sometime, maybe P was one of the old fellers when Stan was a lad! :D

When me and Duncan visited, we did talk about the Ibberson's knives. Stan is very 'tickled' that people look out for, and collect, his Ibberson knives, and he's touched by it I think :)

What a great read sitting down for breakfast!
Looking back at my post when talking to our friend Mick on the forums here, saying that to visit Stans workshop must be a great experience - and now..thanks to my mate Jack - we experienced just that!! Isnt life just great at times!!!

Jack my friend, at east you HAVE an Ibberson knife which a lot of us can say we haven't -even a nice Kitchen knife would be great of theirs as I love using my different knives in my Kitchen - using my knives that I acquired for my Kitchen is always a highlight!

Charlie..... mate...how you do it - I just don't know, but to be invited to that particular table would be a highlight of ones knife collecting memeories - well it would be for me that's for sure, now you have a Stan Shaw! I almost feel like typing .." you lucky dawg!!!" :D

Great to see you here Duncan. I'll look out for some cutlery for you ;) BTW, I picked you up one of the books I mentioned today, the last one they had (it was under the counter!) :)
