Stan Shaw Knives

Great links Jack - thank you, it seems you are forever digging information up and feeding us!

Thank you Charlie for the invite - I just may take you up on that breakfast meeting - the problem is I imagine the lovely old knives you guys would pull out and show and tell -up for swapsies - and when the question of "and what have you got for us today Duncan" would come up, that's then I would have to feign sickness and leave the table to save embarrassment :D

Thanks Duncan :)

You've got plenty of treasure my friend! ;)

A nice Stan Shaw sleeveboard penknife.

Well all those post about Sheffield cutlery and Stan Shaw in particular woke up an old urge I had for Mr. knives. Soooo if everything will work out I will be carrying one within a couple of weeks, fingers crossed

One of my Stan Shaw lobsters. This one is marked inside SS-57. Beautiful craftsmanship milled liners and colorful pearl. Pardon my number label

Looks like it was made at the same time as mine (previous post in this thread).
Is the tang stamp from Ibberson, Chuko?

Thanks Charles. Having one in hand now, though not as decorated, I can just imagine how beautiful your knives are in person! Thanks for showing us.
I wonder if pearl of the quality we see here is still available - some pretty exceptional stuff. It is hard to photograph, but the brilliance shows through.

Nice to see more of Stan's handiwork Jack, S-k and Chuko

A couple of years ago Stan showed me his sample case, not very good pics I'm afraid, it gives some idea of what he commonly makes..

At the time I ordered two stag pruners with forged blades, bottom pic top left, and two different sambar swell centre penknives, bottom pic far right.. really pleased with them.

He also brought along three very fine larger knives, a folding hunter, a coachman's and his own Hallamshire…

Lovely stuff Mick, thanks for posting the pics :)

I have to say, when me and Duncan were talking to Stan, your name came came up and Duncan said, "I think he's got a few of your knives."

Stan said, "A few? He's got a LOT!" :D

In Wellington's first pic above, there is a sowbelly pattern pearl or abalone handled knife in the center.

Not long after I started perusing Ebay, back in the 90's, a seller posted two Ibberson pearl handled sowbelly three blade stock knives.

I wrote and asked if there was a date stamp inside the frame. One was marked SS-74, the other SS-76.

He wanted to know how or why I suspected those might be there, so I was upfront and honest and explained about Stan Shaw.

He asked if I wanted to buy the knives outside of Ebay (one could do that back then), so I offered him $150.00 each on the knives.

They were very nice with Mr. Shaw's blade, liner and backspring file work and they were in mint condition.

I kept them for a couple of years, then started buying Robeson knives exclusively, so I sold both to Jim and Cindy Taylor.

I wish I had photographed them while I had them.

I wish I had never sold them.

Interesting story Charlie, I wonder where those knives are now.

Nice to see Jim and Cindy Taylors name mentioned here in the forums Charlie, just after I put up the thread with the Sheffield labels ( thanks to Jim ).

I remember Jim saying that they sold a lot of their knives off and were getting right out of the knife world? - I may be wrong so please forgive me to people concerned if I have miss-quoted.

Mick - So that's Stans Display - as Jack has mentioned Stan mentioned this a few times, Jack asked how many knives were in his display, Stan answered that he didn't know and that " there all up here, - theres so many of them " ( tapping his head )
Nice fresh memories seeing you guys talking about this.

Hi all
I am a newbie to these forums and have been reading with interest about Stan Shaw and the work he still does, it renewed my interest in his work and the work of other little mesters
I have owned one knife made by Stan since 1977 hopefully the pictures will work, this was produced as part of a pair, one for me and one for my brother and we're requested by my mother while she worked at William Rodgers and knew Stan well

Thanks all look forward to any comments on the knife. , does anyone which model this is?

Welcome to Bladeforums Traditional :) I'm minded of Red Mires, the Sheffield Country & Western singer, who used to play with Kelvin Flats and Roscoe Banks! ;)

That's a beautiful lobster pattern you have, and really something to treasure. You could always go and ask Stan about it, he works at Kelham Island a couple of times a week. If you're still in Sheffield obviously.

Some pics of Stan here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1106897-Interrupting-Stan-Shaw’s-Marmalade-Sandwich

Thanks for showing us your knife :)

Jack
