Well howdy there folks, looking for a knife for my friend as his first real knife. He's been inspired by me and my friend's (who is an infrequently visiting member of BF) knives. Here is what he is looking for. It will be used for EDC and a general purpose knife utility "user" style knife. We think coated would be best for him because of his lack of access to cleaner and stuff, otherwise a very stainless type steel (154cm etc.) His price range is $50-$60, and any suggestions would be helpful. We can supply any more answers to help narrow the search down. Thanks folks!

just about any of the Kershaw Onion knives would make a good starter knife. Not too expensive and of a pretty good quality for a starter. Ed

I'm with difusekit, h1 holds and edge similarly to AUS8 and is completely rust proof. Lacking the steel liners and being rivet constructed simplifies the design and prevents it from accumulating too much crud. Plus its pocket clip is a little longer than most spyderco's for more positive retention. Not to mention the weight and size is great, its sheeple friendlier too

Does anyone think a Mini grippy would fit well for what he wants? everything we look at, me and my friend keep coming back to it...

Spyderco Delica 4 is pure win - $50-$55
Boker Trance and Boker Hyper are excellent for $30
Kershaw Leek $35

I would say yes, but my mini grip shipped dull as hell (yes I was mad, still am). not ideal for a first knife because your friend wont have any way to sharpen it unless you have a kit

Heck for that kind of cash, have him buy a Ka-Bar Dozier, and a SAK with a toolset he likes. That way he gets a great start down the knife junky road - which one to carry today? both? need a new one? :D

mini or regular grip is like 60-70 with careful shopping and i find it more fun than my next suggestion...

also in the price range, but much bigger, is the american lawman

How about a traditional slipjoint. A whole lot of people started down this slippery knife nut slope with one!--KV

Kershaw Leek--whoop whoop! The first knife I recommend to someone who is new to knives or just wants a good quality, EDC knife that won't break the bank.

Best,

Heekma
