Starter knife for a friend

Another vote for the Pacific salt, or salt 1 even.

SAK Farmer....corrosion resistant, light....pocket friendly, office friendly....good QC....inexpensive!!!

+1 to. . . both of these!

In fact, right this minute I have a Spyderco Salt 1 clipped inside my pocket, with a silver alox SAK Farmer sitting down in that pocket. Either one of these alone makes for a *great* knife, and together they make a perfect pair for me.

You can't go wrong with a Salt 1 or a SAK.

Depends on the size of blade you are looking for: Delica/Endura or Salt 1/Pacific Salt. Blade coating is not really necessary with VG10, I have not had any issues with rust.

In that price range I recommend the Native and Delica. Also Kershaws and Victorinox are worth considering.

How about a traditional slipjoint. A whole lot of people started down this slippery knife nut slope with one!--KV

Office friendly. Tougher than a lot of folks give 'em credit for. Can be had in a choice of scale materials and blade steels. If he's not great at sharpening the thin blade will still cut food when dull. A lower end steel might be easier for him to learn to sharpen on. Not that hard to clean. He could do a lot worse than a Boker barlow, Case jack or a Buck stockman.

Heck for that kind of cash, have him buy a Ka-Bar Dozier, and a SAK with a toolset he likes. That way he gets a great start down the knife junky road - which one to carry today? both? need a new one? :D

Sounds like the ideal solution to me.

I bought my friend a Benchmade Vex for his first knife. $35 and a decent starter blade.

Look at the Cold Steel Recon 1, Ak47 and American Lawman, if he wants something really really tough. Kershaw blur, Leek or spec bump if he likes assisted opening. Or Spyderco Delica or Endura or Salt if he wants something light and flat. After he buys a knife have him take a look at picking up a spyderco sharp maker as well.

kershaw skyline in G10 is very light weight and cheap, he's more apt to use it if he has it on him.

Everyone is going to have a different answer for you. Spyderco & Benchmade have some well-priced knives that are also well made. If I were you guys, I would find a knife shop close if there is one or maybe a gun & knife show and handle a bunch and see what you like, then maybe come here and buy it for a better price. Just my opinion. It's pretty hard to tear up a knife if you're using it for what it's made for. It will always be his first knife...to me that's = to your first girl, or first dog. Find one that isn't crazy-priced but will last a long time and doesn't need any maintenance besides a sharpen here and there.

Spyderco Delica 4! You really can't go wrong with this knife... he can get the new full flat grind blade too... highly recommended
