Starting knife collection *absolute beginner*

Welcome to one of the most expensive, addictive, and fun hobbies around.

I know the name "Nutnfancy" isn't very well recieved around here, but check out his YouTube channel. He's a dork, but it gives a good place to start.

Go for:
Kershaw
Benchmade
SOG (be careful, some are crap)
Cold Steel
Spyderco
Ka-Bar/Becker
Victorinox
Leatherman
CRKT makes some decent blades, but be careful

Check out some online reviews on an blade you buy. You'll have a point of reference for your purchase.

Good luck!

Do yourself a big favor and study knives for 2 months before you make a purchase. Knives are a great item to collect but don't plan on making money. READ...READ...READ!!!

Run away while you can. This hobby will consume you . . .

This is probably the best advice. But if you are going to get into this, it might be best to start with a good pocket knife, before you dig into any of those "niche" collecting genres like throwing knives or WWII bayonets.

I recommend knives like the Spyderco Tenacious, Benchmade Griptilian, or Kershaw Skyline. Something sensible, not huge, and very useful.
Carry it for a few weeks and find out if a knife is something you find yourself actually using on a day to day basis. I think you'll find that you won't know how you ever lived without one.

What he said. I started with a Benchmade mini-Barrage. And then graduated to Chris Reeve. And so forth. But buy one Benchmade or Spydie and carry it a while to confirm the size and style you prefer. I prefer 3" blades or slightly smaller, but it is preference and law that determines that.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm still digging through all of the posts.

But to answer the question if I intend on using the knives; No.
I only want the for display and to collect.

I won't make any brand/model/style suggestions as those would be biased to my likes and dislikes. I will say you can to the right place. Now read, read, READ. Do your research, get on Bladehq.com or another big retailer and just look. Look at what's there and what it's made of. Start to look for features and styles you like and don't like. If you like a particular knive start reading reviews. Go to a local knife shop and spend some time fondling. Gunshows are good for this too- at least around here. Research before you buy and buy the best you can easily afford.

The best advice I can give you is make sure you're ready to go down this road because it doesn't end. It can become an addiction. But you've come to the best place for it, even though we're all enablers. So welcome, and come on in, the water is fine.

I skimmed through some sites and put together some styles I like. Maybe some of you pro's can already tell what kind off knives would suite me best (quality wise). Most of the daggers/throwing knives/survival knives I found attractive, are below $50, so I doubt they are of good quality. Anyways, just to give you a brief overview of the styles I like:

Daggers:
1
2
3
4

Survival/Tactical:
1
2
3
4
5

Throwing knives (these are actually the only ones I want to use, not all but some - just for fun):
1
2
3

I started a little while ago and have 3 so far... After a bit of reading I wanted an all purpose camp/survival knife, and went with a falkniven f1, got a sheath made with a fire steel setup. Then I was gifted a buck 119, which I'm told is a solid hunting knife. As of yesterday I have a pm2 for an edc!!!! I'm just sort of going by categories I want, then I research what is recommended in that category. I don't know if this is a good or recommended way to go but just wanted to share my start to knife buying.

Hi all,

I've never collected anything before.....

That is telling. Most collectors, start collecting things at very early ages. The subject of the collections may shift with maturity and personal finances, but the urge is often there from birth.

As for advice, I would urge you to resist purchasing "replicas", especially those said to have been based on artifcats used by "historical characters." Most of these are very poorly made fantasy items with no relevance to what you are trying to collect.

spyderco makes great knives I own 2 of them the persistence and cento fante and they are some of the sharpest knives ive ever had and well made and keep a good edge great for a collection also stay away from frost and taylor brands which makes the new schrade they are junk gerber sucks too I like collecting old vintage knives from camilus, schrade, case, kissing crane also Kershaw and kbar makes great knives as well
