"Steampunk"

Whew! my brain hasnt worked this hard for years! Absolutely unique and ingenious mechanisms. I love it.

Very, VERY cool stuff! Excellent pics and video - video is a must for these.
Appreciate the gentle reminder we all need to heed: ask permission.
Good thread!

Steam punk is cool when its mechanisms, functional gears, antique solid look, etc... not so cool when its just ornametnal gears, wires, hoses, etc.. and stuff glued on

Hey BladeMan. Did you ask permission to post the pics you posted then

Thanks for posting these. I always love to see the tremendous variety available to makers of objects in the category "knife."

Dr Heelhook, i agree. Serge Panchenko's knives are a distinct style unto themselves. To me they also fit into a category as "minimalist". He's quite an artist! i can never guess the end products on his WIP threads.

This genre would have made for some very interesting submissions for the $100,000 cutlery challenge sponsored by the CKCA and Jerry Fisk.

Cool thread. In many crafts fields this genre is taking off. Especially Jewelery and Art. Now knives! :D

Stefen's work goes beyond 'steampunk' on his second folder to engineering madness. Anyone can see to understand the skills and talent required to crate them. Whew!

@ 2knife, it would have been nice if you asked before you use those pics of Stefan's Steampunk folders, anyway, here are both of them.
Which brings me to this comment, which I'm confused about.

In each instance, David gave credit to the maker(s), and even linked to the exact internet forum post where the images originated. (David's post is unedited). I didn't see copyrights or credits tagged onto them. Once you post on the internet, it's out there to be seen, and by extension to share.

In David's case he was an advocate for displaying and PROMOTING Stefan's work. Work already being shown to the public.

I speak from experience as a photographer who's work is shown without my permission all over the world. I'm not a registered member of the that Messerforum, but I'll bet a million bucks you can search and find my images. Russian, Spanish, Chinese, they all have them. My BF Gallery is a free for all, and the really smart ones figured out how to sneak into my website for the images.

They didn't ask me. And, it's OK.

As long as my name is intact or attributed. Truthfully for me I'm more pleased that the client's work is being displayed and admired by others, no matter where they are.

So, Blademan, from where I sit, David does not need his hand slapped. He deserves thanks, maybe from Stefan. In fact we all appreciate your coming in and really showing the images. They deserve the showcase!

And that's all he was doing.

Good post. And I am sure the maker gets satisfaction from seeing people enjoying his work.

Coop, no disrespect but that is crap. Just because it's been posted in public somewhere does NOT make it free for all. Maybe it's handled that way in the US but it's certainly not in Europe. You can't change, sell or give away the "Urheber", which is the pendant to the US copyright. NOTE: Copyright (c) does NOT exist in europe, it's a US thing. When you take a picture, you own the rights, no if and no maybe. I don't need to tag or put credits into a Picture too, that's maybe necessary in the US, but not in Europe. If i put my name in one of your Pics does not make it mine, correct me if i am wrong.

You owe me a million bucks then, PayPal +4%, thanks for the business.

Coop, you find excatly ZERO pictures of yours in the MesserForum, and your name mentioned ONE time and this thread is not about you at all. Go ahead and search the site by yourself, i gladly help you with signing up and it's better then speculating.
Why that? Simply because – as per rule – you are not allowed to post Pictures and Text you do not own or don't have permission to do so, Period. And that's because of the strict laws regarding "Urheberrecht" (copyright law) and a couple other things. The site owner is accountable for the content of the members, and having members post Pics they don't make themself or don't have permission can get you in trouble (aka lawsuits). As founder of the Messerforum, i have been there and done that, more then once, back in the days when i ran it.

I understand your point of view, as a photographer, the Picture itself is your reference. But is it really too much asked to ask for permission to show them public, it's a matter of respect for someones else work. I did'nt slap fingers, all i said is: it would have been nice. That's all, so why do we need to discuss that issue at all?

BladeMan (I can't locate your real name, even on your website),

We have MUCH more in common than at odds. I'm glad you are so passionate about privacy and safekeeping. To a very large degree, I am too. At some point I have to loosen the reins.

I did a little googling and I found my name(s) on the Messerforum, which was a reference to a Russian site which had (54) of my images posted. But... they had replaced the 'SharpByCoop' credit line with 'Erosport.ru'.

A Messerforum member was praising the images, and declaring that was just WRONG! ;)

Just give me a couple of days and I'll have those funds transferred. As a 'gift' though, so I don't have to pay $4,000 in PP fees. ;)

We're good. Thanks for all you do.

My opinion does not count for much here or in Europe, but the attributed use of the photos on this U.S. based website does comply with Section 107-118 of U.S. Copyright law, "Fair Use"(title 17, U. S. Code).

All of these knives are interesting in their own ways, but I love the Van Barnett! Thanks for posting them!

Maybe it's handled that way in the US but it's certainly not in Europe.

This website is hosted in the U.S., so U.S. (not EU) laws apply.

However, if your EU rights are violated by a US website, I imagine there is some procedure over there to get the ISPs to block the website from the EU.

This thread seems to be derailing a bit...

Come on guys, we are all here for the knives. I also do a fair share of posting other peoples pics on local knifeforums in Europe, I always try to add the correct credit. Other people also use my pics, sometimes even in "for sale" threads. Well... it's the interwebs! If you want real privacy, stay off-line! Post nothing!

But then again, if people share these pics... more people get exposed to nice knives, and more exposure for knifemakers equals more sales, yesno?

Anyways, back on topic...

Whew! my brain hasnt worked this hard for years! Absolutely unique and ingenious mechanisms. I love it.

That is something I really would like to see... Mr. Bump building a Steampunk Cut-n-Shoot!
