Steel Ho's

I was digging around my shop and looking for some steel I have hoarded through out the years. I found a 36" piece of precision ground Vascowear, a 14" piece of 6-K Stellite and several feet of Uddehollm AEB-L. I am eyeing the VascoWear to use in a 1095, 15n20 billet and San Mai it with the Vascowear.

Anyone else a steel HO' and what treasures have you uncovered?

I'm a bit of a steel ho. Last time I cleaned the shop I found 6' 1084, 8' 5160, 5lb O1, a forged tanto, 3 half finished billets, and my first home made steel bloom.

Hmm, let's see, I took stock not too long ago: Several 6' lengths of 1/4"x1" 1084, a couple 6' lengths of 1/4"x1.25" 1084, a stick of 1/8"x1" 1084, a bunch of 1.5" wide Admiral 8670m (formerly sold as L6), a few sticks of 1/4"x1" 5160, a five foot length of 1.25" round Crucible L6, six feet of 1" round W2, five feet of 3/4" W2, various lengths of 1/2" and 3/4" round W1 stock, various thickness/lengths of precision ground O1, a bit of 1095, some 1/2" rounds of 52100 and a few odds and ends of 1/8" thick 440c. Oh and lets not forget the 65 lb.or so of 6150 (a giant truck spring) but that's getting into the scavenged steel which I wouldn't even begin to go into here. If I'd actually get in the shop and made some knives I have more steel than I know what to do with but I still want to buy more especially when someone like Aldo has nice clean new 1084 available. Ridiculous actually!

I'm a steel dumb ass. I have lots of O1, D2, A2, 303, 304 - but when I moved my shop they weren't labeled, and the organizational structure was destroyed, so now I don't know what a lot of it is. Some of it is labeled with a sharpie, but much of it isn't. I was turning out some spacers out of some junk metal I had a few days ago, just to realize I was using 440C. feh...

I do have an impressive 6" diameter D2 drop left over from a job. I'm thinking I may use it as a boat anchor...

I have 36 feet of D2 cut up and laying on a desk...

down to about 25 lb. of 15N20 (gotta fix that)


Add these up, subtract 50 lb. and you have exactly the amount of steel that I have but don't actually need

I think this qualifies me as a steel whore

Edited to add... in looking at all those numbers that looks like a lot of steel... but apparently steel is like...um... dense. So all those pounds don't really take up much volume.

Holy cannoli Dave! John Deere pto shafts? Does that mean you intend to start forging? Do it!

Guy, it's not that, yet - you just know us steel ho's, can't say no! Fact is, I'm way to lazy to work as hard as you smiths do, and far too cheap to tool up for it. Perhaps it'd be different if there were a smith locally I could learn from but that's just not the case. If I could get you and Chuck and Reg and Raymond Richard close enough I guess me becoming a smith would be a forgone conclusion. At least I have some practice steel just in case you all want to move to Iowa to enjoy our summers and winters, and teach this stock removal hardcase how to forge those beautiful blades!

-40# various size chunks of A2
- had 30# of pure nickle (damn wish'en i didn't scrap that!!) but needed the $
- several other things, but some how it just aint enough soon as i get the $$$ i will have about 50-100# of don hansons W2
