Steel type for buck 110 folding hunter

420 hc is ok but I'd take the 440c over anything they have ever made blades out of,including the s30v.the 440c takes and holds a beautifull edge, and doesn't chip like the 420hc that I find is extremely brittle.i have a regular 110 going to buck right now that I dropped on the floor in my basement and blade snapped in half from impact, never seen one break so close to the tang,it looks like white metal ,very porous, and brittle.

RAZORBLADES, could you describe the cutting tasks that you find chip your 420HC blades?

The last 420blade that chipped out while feild dressing a deer, don't know if it hit bone or what,no miss use though.

RAZORBLADES,

That's odd. I used to horribly abuse an Ecolite Ranger as a shop knife. I remember shrugging once as I used it to cut out some metal from a heavy metal can (was making a shim) and thinking, "We'll see how the blade holds up." It got some scratches and a bit of a dent in the edge but not a real noticeable chip.

Is this something you've seen consistently, or perhaps a blade with some impurity/flaw in the steel?

I'm not an expert, but the heat treat doesn't seem on par with older El Cajon 420hc.ive seen it on too many new 110 s to mention.ive never he an issue with any 440c 110 ever.same goes for the 425m.

The standard steel in Buck's 110 is 420HC, and Buck makes a model in S30V for Cabela's and in CPM 154 for BassPro..

I purchased a Buck 110 CPM154 blued Bos Heat treated folder a number of years ago and could not remember where I got it .. and could not find much info about it so THANKYOU. I don't use it often but have been very impressed with how well it keeps an edge. However I find it too heavy to keep in my pocket but it's great if I'm in places where i can wear it in the leather sheath attached to my belt. However in Ontario Canada, other then the woods, you don't want to be wearing a knife on your belt - law enforcement get upset about that!

haze, Your behind in your reading. The 110 with D2 steel came out in 2013. Here's you a picture of it with some doves. DM

I have a custom Stellite 6-K blade for a 110. I also have 3 custom Damascus 110 blades (feather, lightning, and ladder). I have 3 types of Ion Fusion blades TiN, ZrN, and TiAlN. I have a CPM S-110-V blade on order. What could be more appropriate for a 110 than a 110 blade? Other blades include BG-42, CPM-154, ATS-34, 440-C, SS Damascus, all the Selector shapes, napped steel, etc. A friend of mine made a Wootz blade for a 110 (drop point). The permutations are endless, and that's okay.
All they need to do now is 3D print a Titanium basket handle for the 110 to bring it up to date and add a CPM S-125-V blade.

The Buck Collectors Club offered them. So, maybe you could contact someone in the club who has some. Or they could turn up on other outlets. DM

Awesome read. I just purchased a 110 with 4 pins and found this article in search of finding what Steel I had.

Here is my list of steels used in the 110. Some are standard steels others include Build Outs, or BCCI knives. I suppose a person could include the ION Fusion blades as the cutting edge was Titanium.
