I have seen them on ebay, most are made of damascus, but I dont know anyone who owns one. Does anyone know about these knives or have an opinion on them?

I own six, and they're dam pretty knives. I don't know first hand how they perform because they are all under glass.

They're were a couple for sale a little while back,I was gonna' jump on 'em but then Sunfishman had his sale for a friend/collector who had died.I believe two brothers are involved in the Stek's,Craig & Steve.IIRC.
Will find out and post back unless someone beats me. :)

I used to see him at local gun shows all the time. This was many years ago, so I don't know if his practices have changed, but at that time he told me he liked to use metal banding/straps off pallets or whatever in his damascus. I have read an account from another guy who had bad experience with one. He said the blade was brazed or soldered directly to the front of the guard with no tang whatsoever. It snapped right off when he tried using it, because it happened to be a poor brazing job. But if it was a good brazing job, he probably wouldn't have known there was no tang if he just used it gently for lighter cutting. I seriously doubt it would have held up to heavy use either way. But again, that info is several years old, so just email the maker directly and ask him about how he makes them.

This thread probably belongs in GB&U.

I have one Stek knife, purchased at ePrey. It had a series of voids along the midline on one side where two billets were joined. I raised this with Mr. Stek, and he brushed me off. I was imagining things. No voids existed. etc.

I will not own a second Stek knife.

Consistent quality is the sign of a top maker.
Dealing forthrightly with inevitable stumbles is the sign of a quality person.

I have two, an extremely long Bowie and a 7 inch blade fighter both Damascus and have owned them for years. They are amazingly beautiful so I have them in my do not touch or cut anything part of my collection.

Since I have no abused them I can't speak towards durability but from handling and studying them they appear to be extremely well made and flawless.

well i will tell what! He makes the finest knife I have ever seem. I have met him at his shop 3 or 4 times and he got me started on pounding out damascus. I used to buy billets from him and I did get one that had flaw. He replaced it with one that was twice as big. To me he is a great knife maker, period. Leroyk

i've got one .

it is a beautiful piece. handle looks like green dyed ironwood.

blade in a complex damascus.

have never used it, but looks like it would stand up.

Good dude, who makes a lot of knives; mostly damascus. I have no doubt that there's a flaw or two in his damascus now and then. It can happen to the best of damascus makers. For the most part, though; his stuff is pretty good and reasonably priced. Damascus is very time consuming and labor intensive to make.
