Seller (Steo) approached me and offered to sell me a knife.

He claimed to be a straight shooter, and that the price of his knife was non-negotiable.

I accepted his price and replied with a firm " I'll take it".

Since that time ( 1 week ago), he has since changed his mind about selling the knife to me, and has given me multiple excuses.

His first excuse was that the knife was in transit to him, so I informed him that I would wait for him to get it.

His second excuse, after he received the knife, was that he wanted to offer the knife to his "friends" because he didn't want to upset them.

When I told him that he was wrong about breaking his agreement with me, his Third excuse was that he wanted to keep the knife.

All these excuses to back out of the agreement occurred after I had agreed to buy the knife from him, at his price.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't "I'll take it" in response to a sales offer, mean that the knife should be sold to me at the agreed upon price?

In short, STEO is not a reputable member, and I would advise others to avoid him.

Tony contacted me through a pm on another forum congratulating me on the score. He said he tried to bid on the knife and gave me his contact info inviting me to "chat". At the time I declined. Five days later I was considering letting the knife go but told Tony very plainly "I'd like to get this one in hand first before I solidify any deals." Since that point in time Tony has decided to ignore this fact. I received several messages insisting that I provide my paypal info. The messages consistently became more aggressive to the point of actually threatening me. I said I didn't want to loose any friends over a knife and Tony interpreted this to mean I would rather sell it to my friends. I said I wanted to wait until I receive it to make up my mind and that's what I did, I decided to keep it.

Sometimes we hear what we want to hear and interpret words in a way that we hope will work in our favor.

When people steal or mail the wrong item, etc then it's a gripe and needs to be rectified.

No money was lost, nobody stole, no need to drag someones name through the mud. At the end of the day these are "wants" not "needs".

RiverRat hit on an important point. No money changed hands, no one was stolen from, and according to steo, nothing was promised. Something to think on, dragging someone through the mud without proof or launching allegations without base is not something that is allowed on here. What ends up happening is that you make yourself look like an unsavory character to deal with. These things work both ways and often have long lasting barbs that take a while to forget.

I would like to think was just a simple misunderstanding and should be water under the bridge.

and according to steo, nothing was promised.

I would disagree.

Something was promised to me from him.

He offered the knife to me, and when I accepted his offer, I believe that he has "promised' that knife to me.

Here's his initial emais to me, and my responses to him (first message is at Bottom):

Tony,

Since the word is out who has this, I've been swamped with emails and
pm's. I have several friends who will be pissed if THEY aren't first
in line. I'm re-evaluating this. Hope you understand.

Hello Tony,

Duane can verify what I paid for this one. I'd like to make a little
more than a hundred bucks on it. Duane can also verify I'm a straight
forward guy. If you're interested one firm price, $2,200.

Let me know,

Thanks

Dave

Something I take from this and want to mention is- People should Not post something For Sale that is Not in their Possession.

SECTION 2 - Rules/Procedures for Selling, Buying, Trading, & Offering Services:
The implementation of common sense is strongly encouraged beyond this point. This applies directly to the persons involved in the transactions.

Sellers/Selling -
1.Be 100% sure that you want to sell the item, have it in your possession

Personally it's easy for me to just write off both parties behavior as not acceptable in circumstances like this. I have no desire to take chances in this hobby for any reason and have been very successful (if not lucky) by using this approach.

If everything I have read from both parties is accurate it sounds like:

1. STEO "wins" a knife auction on another forum.
2. tcs888 contacts him to say "nice score" I tried to buy that knife too. Since we have that in common maybe we can "chat" about knives.
3. STEO decline offer to chat.
4. STEO decides maybe I can sell this knife.
5. STEO contacts tcs888, who had bid on the same knife just a short time ago and ultimately offers it to him at a stated price (see email).
6. tcs888 accepts STEO's terms as offered and asks for an address to send payment to (see email).
7. STEO decides, for whatever reason, not to complete the sale saying he was just testing the waters and decided to keep it once he got it.

Is this accurate?

If so, I agree with tcs888 in that they had an agreement, and both parties should honor it.
It's true that in the end no money changed hands so we aren't talking about a really big deal, but tcs888 IMHO has the right to be every bit as upset as if he were the one selling the knife, and someone who promised to buy it never followed through.

I have dealt with Steo-Dave--Seems to be an upstanding person...I have had numeorus dealings with him.. NOT 1 Glitch...
If NO MONIES Exchanged hands.. No deal was broken per sey...Other than words back and forth--Was there truly a need to deal with this publically instead of with a Moderator Privately?
Just curious..I mean no offense Tony what so over.. Not by any means taking sides.I truly see both points..

this is stupid read the rules, the person who has the knife can end any transaction at any time without giving a reason at his his discretion,as long as no money has changed hands looks like someone trying to drag someones name through the mud bencause they are mad they didn't get their knife

This^ I dont get it sometimes people just decide they dont want to do the deal anymore. No money changed hands? You didn't lose money? Great. Move on and keep searching for the knife you're looking for. If he wants to keep his knife its his to keep period.

probably a good idea for both of y'all to shake hands and agree to disagree.

sooner or later this thread will bring out the worst and make both y'all look bad. course i could be wrong, and i often am.....but i think it's best to shut this one down and move along to greener pastures. nothing good will come out of this for either party, imho.

I think if he had sent the paypal information for a payment then that would be a different story but he changed his mind and its tough but every one needs to play well in the sand box and no kicking sand things always work out for the best and maybe you will find something better thats the way things work out

Ok, I know both parties for a time and have had no trouble with either.

Looking at the info it seems that the seller wanted to back out of the sale he started and did not try to do it diplomatic enough.

If you want to back out of a sale, it better be for a damn good reason and you need to make sure the buyer understands your reason and that things stay on a comfortable level.

Don't do feeler sales or someone will get annoyed for wasting their time. Talk to a dealer first if you don't know a price. Once you give a price you know what the deal is if the buyer accepts it.

So again, if you are trying to fix a mistake you made with a buyer about selling someone a piece, you need to make sure the buyer is in completely aware and on notice (i didn't say they had to be happy). Some people you can't make happy anyhow.

What I think went wrong was that the seller shifted gears on the buyer and it wasn't the right person to do that to. This really should not be done to any buyer whether seasoned or newbie, btw. I know when Tone commits to a sale, like many of you, its good to go and nothing would have stopped the payment from being sent to the seller.

One point: Don't suggest that you sell a knife you don't have in hand either, unless your really sure.

I hope you guys can figure it out and keep moving.

On the idea that this negative should not have come to the forum is absurd because you should always fight for the value of your word.

We have nothing else more important then our word.

No one is out any money or property, so on that note I'll shut this one down. If anyone wants to add anything that has not already been posted let me know.
