Steve Corkum

At one time Steve Corkum was an honest knifemaker with a good reputation for his products and business. Looks like those days are over.

2 1/2 years ago, I had heard this was the case. As my grandfather said, "Hind sight is always 20/20". I guess fame can go to your head. I like the court idea. I also like the Better Business Bureau idea. I am going to continue to try to get my knives, or be paid back.

This experience has changed the way I will work with custom makers. Not all are out to "corkum" their customers. I have dealt with some good ones. Al Polkowski (At least he told me it would take 2 years) delivered on time, Mike Irie, awesome. I buy most from "brokers" (?) now (Bladeart, Arizona Custom, Robertson Custom). I have never had a problem there.

I think it is time to go after Steve Corkum like we did Allan Blade. If it hasn't been already, this info needs to be disseminated on all the knife forums. This maker seems to have become one of the real bad apples of the knife community.

Thanks. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in Pennsylvania. There is something funny. His cell phone number is "no longer in service". There was a little satisfaction when you could leave a message. No one answers his home phone.

If anyone knows Steve and would like to help, please email me, or contact him and let him know what is going on. He has my telephone numbers and email info.

i imagine steve knows whats going on, will he do something about it is a different matter. i dont think he cares whats on the forums about him, just flat doesnt care, has he ever posted here??

too bad, he makes some good stuff, thought about a knife myself a couple yrs ago, thankfully never went forward on it, he wanted a deposit or full pay up front and i wouldnt do that. saw his hawk ads in combat handguns mag IIRC.

as i have said so many times, corkum may be talented but there are so so many dead honest guys just as talented out there to deal with, people who would rather die than ripp ya off, deal with them and forget hawk knives imho.

hope he gets right with all of you guys,

best of luck to ya

greg

He knows exactly what's going on. The last call I got from him (still trying to sell knives) was a couple of weeks ago. I told him that the entire knife community was on to him so he might as well start looking for something else to do. He had no comment. What this group suspects appears to be the facts. Take care.

I am surprised that 1SKS still carries Hawk Knives. I would have thought that there was enough evidence that Corkum is a crook that Spark would not want to support him.

Keith, we put in some of Corkum's knives early summer, giving him the benefit of the doubt. While it is highly unlikely I will support him futher given the way he treats his other customers, I will have to continue to offer for sale the pieces we have in stock. Not sure I want to pack them up and send them back, hoping he will refund my money. So, while we do have some of his pieces in stock, it is not to say I am supporting him. I expect Spark is in the same boat.
Guy makes a good knife....I simply don't understand the mentality...why doesn't he just take care of the customers...cheez

I suspect that you are correct.

I've been following this thread for some time and all I can say is that it saddens me... :(

I considered Steve Corkum to be a major influence on me when I first started making knives and my fascination with the wrapped handle genre. I will retain the fond memories... As a knifemaker, I recall a quote that says it all (can't remember by whom) -

Experience is learning from your own mistakes. Wisdom is learning from the mistakes of others.

Good luck to all, and good luck to Steve. Jason.

When he contacted you, did he leave a telephone number??

No, sorry, and I didn't ask because I have no interest in contacting him. I had placed an order some months ago and invited him to fill it and ship it to me COD. He never filled it and I never put anything into the system about him. I have to purge the email file monthly because of the 500 or so pieces of spam I receive per day so I don't have the original emails we exchanged in the beginning either.

Sounds like this Corkum guy is a real class act. Thanks for letting me know about the type of business this guy conducts, everybody. God, what a P.O.S. :grumpy:

Well, I have an update on my Corkum fiasco.

I emailed him with a new email account and used my middle name as the return. Guess what, he returned my email with "now is a good time to order, as I have a lot of items I am working on". I managed to call and GOT HIM!!!!! He told me that he would "ship on Monday" (like I haven't heard that before, for 2 1/2 years). He did not have my complete order (he had 4 of them, not the last 2). I told him to just fill it in with anything he had, that I wanted this done, more than I wanted the two knives he did not have..... How easy is that????

You know what....Monday came and went, then the next Monday, and the next...NO KNIVES    No one is that sick, still making and selling knives all over the net, and not filling back orders. I do not believe it. He has proven to me he is a liar. He may have proven he is a thief. I am also looking into mail fraud, since some of the transactions utilized the postal service.

I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, lot of good that did. After a few weeks, they wanted to close the file because he would not get in touch with them. NO JOKE!!!! That has been my issue!!!! I asked them to keep it open and to get me information to press charges in Pennsylvania. I have not heard back yet.

If ANYONE knows him, and can get through to him, have him fill this order. He knows me, he knows what was ordered, and he knows my contact info. I do not want to press charges, BUT THIS IS NOT A SMALL ORDER ALL PAID FOR IN ADVANCE :footinmou . I do not want to put his family through that, but I see no other alternative.

HELP!!!!

I don;t know if payment was by mail or if delivery was promised by mail, but use of the U.S. Mails in a fraudulant transaction (taking payment with no intent to deliver, for example) is a federal felony. If the U.S. mails were part of this transaction, you might wish to contact your nearest Postal Inspector and discuss what happened. A pattern of similar transactions are more likely to get attention. A visit from the "Law" often rearranges prioritities, prisons being unpleasant places that smell bad and are full of rough folks.

I think any vendor who is dealing with this maker would want to know what's up.

Its called small claims court. You can file in all 50 states.
It may work. Its worth it.

You pay the Court costs to start - say $25.00.

If you are in a different state, the cost of travel to hearings is probably prohibitive.

OK, you win. You have a judgment. The defendant still won't pay. Now what? The courts are prohibited by law from giving legal advice (They may give "hints" despite the illegality.) OK, I'll give you a hint: you need to file the necessary documents (You know what those are, right?) with the regular division of the court and file the necessary papers (Which are?) for execution of the judgment on the assets of the defendant that you have (You have?) located.

It ain't like TV.

Nothing is like TV.

boy thats the truth, i know some folks who went the small claims court route, and they all said it wasnt worth the hassle/never got a dime. even if ya do get a judgement (all 3 of my buds did) unless the other party is a "stand up" person (and if he was why are you in small claims court??) who will abide by the courts decision, how do you force them to pay? thousands of ways to duck a judgement, small claims court in something like this is a waste of time imho, i know it sucks but thats the truth........
