Here is one hell of a page from my next book, displaying eight of
Steve Ryan's bold folding weapons....

The folders are from the Michael Talanian collection.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I have a feeling (well based as I have completed most of the
illustrations for the new book) that this will be my most amazing
custom knife related project so far.

With more than 520 representing nearly most of today's trends
in custom knives I shall display on one hand many out-of-this-world
Loerchners, Fuegens, Hancocks, Hansens, Schmidts, Johnsons and
Walkers and Lakes, to name a few, but also have displays of the bold and
the beautiful Beggs, Striders, Onions, Galyeans and Ryans, etc.

I consider all these knives to be the cutting edge of today's
knife art creativity and am displaying them as such...

Here are two folders from way up of one side of this art, both by
Dr. Fred Carter. The one on the left "Dragonfly" you might remember,
was made for my first book "... Custom Folding Knives" (2003) while
"Butterflies" (on the right) was very recently made, especially for
this book to create a matching pair...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I love the Carter folders. Steve Ryan's work is awesome, but I really like the less aggressive blade profiles best.

Disagree...

I find Ryan's work to be derivative, clunky, and unattractive....it is certainly original in final execution, but that is not necessarily anything to laud the work about...

Specifically, they are large and heavy, and with some of those shapes, a solution without a problem.

My .02.

I can understand you Steven as I can understand Joss who feels different.
That is the beauty of art. Some love this and dislike something else....

When one's taste has matured, the likes and dislikes are more immediately
obvious to the eye. That is quite natural.

"The world of Art Knives" will display a very wide range of styles and designs.
What is common to all of them is that they are all a part of the exciting
world of today's custom knives.

I love them all and greatly admire all their talented creators....

Well, I was reacting to the pics, I've never held one. I certainly don't like big and/or heavy folders.

Steve Ryan is an original designer and innovator- while his designs may not please everybody, not too many knife makers can be a favorite to all enthusiasts.

I think these knives shown by David are an outstanding representation of a solid creative independent knife maker who has a huge following and whose work is in great demand.

Also, as an added bonus, Steve Ryan is a really nice guy. (ok, David...you too!)

You said it well my friend. You described my personal impressions
of Steve Ryan's designs better than I could....

steve ryan designs are unique and they certainly have an enthusiastic following within the "tactical knife" crowd

art knives they are not

When I first became aware of David's proposed new title "The World of ART Knives" I was just a little concerned as I personally wouldn't categorize some of the beautiful knives which will grace it's pages as "ART KNIVES", or at least fitting what some of us consider an Art knife to be.

However after further thought and putting the name in more of a context that ALL custom knives are to some degree "ART" I came to really like the name.

I feel including the term "ART" in the title may help the book's acceptance in the mainstream Art and collectible communities. I feel it important that custom knives move in that direction and books like this can sure help in accomplishing that.
