Steve Ryan - BOLD and INSPIRING FOLDERS

When I first became aware of David's proposed new title "The World of ART Knives" I was just a little concerned as I personally wouldn't categorize some of the beautiful knives which will grace it's pages as "ART KNIVES", or at least fitting what some of us consider an Art knife to be.

Pictures of Elvis or dogs on velvet can be considered art by some, just not necessarily "good" art, and definitely not "fine" art.

However after further thought and putting the name in more of a context that ALL custom knives are to some degree "ART" I came to really like the name.

I feel including the term "ART" in the title may help the book's acceptance in the mainstream Art and collectible communities. I feel it important that custom knives move in that direction and books like this can sure help in accomplishing that.

Thanks Kevin.

You too put into words the feelings I have about this
complex and multi-faced art form.

Well, I was reacting to the pics, I've never held one. I certainly don't like big and/or heavy folders.

big? yes..clunky and heavy? no way! I find the balance and feel on mine (and the ones that i have handled) to be incredible...

Kevin, STeven and David - The discussion over what is art would best be discussed in the context of "Art and Design" rather than "Art". They are separate (though collateral) topics, in my opinion, and as I recall, the title of a knife book with these very words. In my mind, more appropriate.

You are quite right, Bob... And yes, when I named my first
books on modern custom knives, in a series of four books, I too
found it very appropriate to use:
"Art and Design in Modern Custom Folding Knives" (2003) and
"Art and Design in Modern Custom Fixed-Blade Knives" (2005)...

Thanks for reminding me what the right definition is that will allow
including both Fred Carters and Steve Ryans in a book on modern
custom knives, or when displaying them in the same Thread!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Specifically, they are large and heavy

I'm not really sure what that means.

His larger knives are large and heavy, but that could be said of anyone who makes knives.

You realize of course, that Steve Ryan makes a wides range of designs, including small and medium sized knives.

I own a Steve Ryan Karambit and it is very well made! I see the above post saying he never held one,but they are not for him. I think he would change his mind if he actually got to hold one. But most of Ryan's knives closing or passing the $1000.00 mark, few get that chance.

If you are referring to me, I stated that I have handled a number of Steve's knives, and remain unimpressed.

Gulp, a whole $1,000+?....for a custom made knife?......WOW...that sure am a whole lot of money!! Probably out of my price range, shucks!

Useless is the adjective that springs to mind. And I am not just taking about the knives.

Why are there so many posts, laced with anger and jealousy? (the one above for example)

People, let's just enjoy the knives and stop with the (my favorite maker is better than yours) attitude. :(

Passion(anger, jealousy(not applicable in bladenbarrel's case, here) joy, lust....) are all part of collecting....it's a passionate pursuit.....you are not going to change "us".
