Sticking up for Nick Wheeler

Nick your are an elitist jerk!!! Just joking!!! You definetly have earned your elite status. Ive learned more from some of your videos and post then I would in YEARS of trying myself! I can't thank you enough! A few years back I made a thread of how us newer makers are learning so fast due to people like you!!! Im sorry to see you take a break but can only pray and hope you are back soon!

Nick knows his shit.. period, the proof is in the pudding!
If your any kind of serious new maker take the time to fill your profile out, it shows a bit of seriuosness, and can lead to getting in a shop, which will be necessary at some point if a person plans on getting any kind of real skill set in this craft!
This is one of those crafts that mentors can play huge roles in! But heck Ive been only making for 2 years but have had my work critqued but makers like Nick and its invaluable!:o
Talk to you soon Nick.
Greg

Enjoy your time away Nick, you will be missed. I tend to lurk and read rather than post so your WIP's and threads have contributed greatly to my knifemaking education. Thank you for that. Enjoy the Holidays with your family and keep living the dream.

I don't know what the heck happened.. But it is a sad day when a person that has helped out around here is leaving because of some sort of internet drama.

Nick, I want to echo what the others have said.

In my other post that Patrice started I said I don't post much, and frankly I don't. I do know that some of the postings that you have made have been a tremendous help to me. I initially got the fever at age 6 when I was aching for a Case Stockman(I got it too at 6 years old :D )

Anyway, I had to take a medical retirement in 2011; have always tinkered and "fixed up" knives for family and friends, so I thought why not start making some. This place (you especially and a couple of others) is a gold mine of information. The little things along the way that you guys explain has made what I do so much better(and easier).

When I had my accident it scared me to death to think about not being able to go back to work. I tried for 2 and a half years to maintain my job, but my doctor finally told me it was time to make a decision. I retired. Now I am making knives(hobbyist and I know it) but I am having the time of my life. I guess what I'm really trying to say is THANK YOU!!!

Do what you have to do that is best for you and your family and let the rough end drag.

Merry Christmas, may God bless you and yours abundantly above all that you could ask or think.

Pat

Thanks for your wips, Nick. Learned lots from you. Hopefully I'll be able to shake your hand some day and thank you face to face.

Nick is the Bee's Knee's and the nicest guy I have never met.
Oh, he makes pretty ok knives too!

Nick, you gotta do what you feel is best for yourself. A whole lot of people here
will miss your work, ethic and sense of humor. It's truly sad when a really fine maker
is driven off by folks who don't have a real idea of what you've contributed.

Hopefully your absence will be brief. Those of us who want to increase our skills
will greatly miss your contributions to the overall increase of our knowledge base.

MS is within your sights. Go for it!

Bill

Well, dang.

Nick, if I could choose any one maker to go and spend time in the shop with in hopes of learning something, you would be at the top of the list.

Keep on keepin' on and when you're ready, come on back. You're the kind of person Shop Talk needs more then anything.

Cheers
Matt

Well buddy, it is what it is I suppose.:( I think it's unfortunate that you feel the way you do but I can't say I'm surprised. I miss the shop talk of a few years ago.

Hope you and Angie and the family have a merry Christmas. I'll talk to you soon.

Jonny

I am gonna cry.

I hope to see you around on the other forums. Hopefully things will take a turn for the better in Shop Talk in the future where you and others can post and get the respect warranted.

Thanks brother

P.S..... Damn, we lost another one :(

You must do what's right for you and yours, first and foremost. I respect and admire your work a great deal, Nick, and I look forward to your return.

I just want to say as a newbie your WIPs have been fabulous, I and I have learned a lot from you.
Thanks for the help and Merry Christmas

I too read all your posts Nick, pinch pictures of your well thought out tooling and most of the knives you have put up to show us

Thank you for that. Enjoy the Holidays with your family and please come back soon
Richard

Hi Nick.
I understand and am not surprised at your decision, but wish it had not come about. My best to you ! Frank

As a newb i have learned a great deal from your posts and WIP threads. You have, and hopefully will again, be a huge asset to this community. I do understand your reason for taking the time away to gain perspective on the entire scope of what is going on and what has transpired. I have never been one to be offended by criticism of any kind and do not feel that you have been unjustly critical in your posts. With that said i cant help but feel, as a newbie to this forum, that i may be part of what is watering down a forum previously filled with great craftsmen and overflowing with knowledge. I am a beginner, big on ambition and dedication and short on funds and great knowledge. I came here with the intention of improving my craft, but never wanted wanted to contribute to any problem that would cause a skilled maker to leave this area. As i said i cant help but feel that i have added to the watering down of the soup, and if that is the case, i am truly sorry.

Sir, I for one will miss you here. You are indeed the gold standard for which the rest of us mere mortals strive. I have learned very much from your contributions and have ALWAYS figured when you spoke I listened.
