Stiff Sebenza

Is there a way to make my LG Insingo open smoother? It's a good bit stiffer then my LG Regular. It's NOT THE WASHERS. If I hold the lock open the blade will freely swing. It is the tension from the lockbar. If I put my thumb on the lug it feels like it jerks when opening it slowly. I know your not supposed to put your thumb on the stud, but on my LG Reg you can do it and it opens super super easy and smooth.

Mine (Lg. Insigno) has a firm lock bar, but the movement is perfectly smooth. Just like my Umnumzaan's and Regular's.

My small Insingo is smooth, however, it seems to have more resistance when opening than other Sebenza's I've handled. And the closed retention and lockbar are more firm.

I don't notice any opening resistance, but the retention is definitely more "crisp" then my Regulars.

Maybe put a tiny dab of grease/lube on the ceramic ball of the lockbar?

that is what i have done to a couple knives with stiff lockbars.

i suppose you could remove some of the tension by flexing it the other way, but i dont know if i would recommend that.

no good will ever come from that. that's probably the quickest way to seriously damage a folder. definitely try the lube first, and if not, call up CRK.

Actually, I've done that with a few of my Ti frame-locks & they've all been fine. The trick is to not overdo bending the lock-bar. I just tweak it a little bit, put it together & try it. It made a huge difference on my current user Seb (A lg. reg. with CF scale).

I do recommend taking it apart 1st & lubing the washers, but as some have said, that isn't what's usually causing the tension.

If you think about it, you're just helping the break-in along a bit quicker, that's all. At least, as long as you don't go nuts in tweaking the lock-bar.

I'm having a similar problem- the screw tension on the pivot screw shouldn't adjust the pivots action, right? For me it makes a HUGE difference. Too loose and the blade just flies out and sometimes the blade even hits the non-lock handle slab and has the slightest bit of play, and the screw starts moving it's way out. Too tight and I have to use both hands to open the knife, or really hurt my thumb to open it. This is all in a difference of about a 20 degree turn of the screw. This isn't normal, is it? I've been playing with this knife a lot trying to get it broken in, lubing it up weekly, cleaning it and the like. I don't know what the issue is.

No, that is not normal for a Sebenza. I would check to make sure you haven't pinched a washer on reassembly, as that (in my experience) is the most common cause of the symptoms you describe.

how do I know if I'm pinching a washer? As far as I can tell, when I reinsert the blade into the handle the washers aren't moving off the pivot in any way. I have a steady hand and I'm shining a bright light to know that nothing is moving. After doing this a few times I'm still having the same problem.

You'll "know" you pinched a washer then the knife goes back together funky. That is, the blade doesn't center, often loosening it involves lots of play while tightening it makes it very difficult to open.

I recommend loosening the stop pin a turn when putting it back together. Yes, you shouldn't have to, but sometimes the little extra room helps putting the blade back in.

Grease everything up, make sure that the washers are straight with the pivot pushing, and slide it together.

Your knife will need to go back to CRK. I can take the pivot all the way out of both mine and there is still no side to side play. As with my problem I don't know if they will fix it or they will just say it's within spec. Hopefully someone from CRK will chime in and let me know what to do. Either send it in, try adjusting the lockbar myself or just deal with it. My lock bar is stiff enough that it hurts my thumb disengaging the lock after a couple times

That's the thing though- every time I reassemble it I'm positive I'm doing it right. The blade is aligned properly, I can make the washers spin if after I just barely put it into the handle (which would tell me they're not getting pinched), and even still there's a difference in action between very tight and not so tight.

If I'm doing it wrong after watching tons of videos, watching tutorials, being as careful as humanly possible, using the correct tools, then I'm not ever going to be able to detect the difference between wrong and right.

I mean, I can live with this but from everything I've heard there should be virtually no difference in action if you only have the screw BARELY in there versus snugly tight.

In that case you'll have to send it in. Something's off.

Stiff lock bars? What's with the huge complaint? Stiffer the better! :)
