Which pattern do you prefer, Stockman or Whittler, and why?
Please post pics of your best examples of each.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

And to all our non-US members, well, have a Happy Thursday!

Yeah, gotta be a stockman. I like the sheep foot.

I personally could be content carrying a stockman every day. It has all the tools I need. While I have never owned a whittler, the stockman, is in my opinion a great edc.

Both nice Brett but the top one is Stellar:thumbup:

In the past I carried BUCK Stockman and loved it. I've always like the look of the Whittler but for me the Sheepfoot is the deal maker:)

Thanks Paul. My wife grabbed that one for me for our anniversary this year.

I agree with as well. The sheepfoot is my most used blade on it.

I do rather like this Case Humpback Whittler:

But the sheepfoot blade seals the deal for the stockman:

No matter which end they decide to stick it on.

With a stockman, you know what blades you're going to get, and it's a wonderful collection of blades. But if you look around, you can find many variations of whittlers, and choose the blade combo you'd like. For example, one of the advantages of the stockman's sheepsfoot is its straight edge, but lots of whittlers will also have a straight-edged blade (often a coping or wharncliffe blade, or both).

Some great stockman examples, from S&M, Queen, GEC, Fight'n Rooster and Moore Maker.

A slender clip blade and a stout sheepfoot make a formidable combination, plus a third blade for extra utility.

I think if I had something like that splitback Norfolk that Chief put up there, I'd be set for life. Never had a grail knife before, I think maybe I do now. :) I'm guessing that's the Northwoods in mammoth ivory?

If I had to choose....I'd like a whittler. The stockman has never been one of my favs. Not sure why, maybe the look or the name of the style. Maybe a GEC #57 or Case seahorse whittler with a wharnie blade would be a cool pick. I like the feel of the handle on the #57 whittler.

I typically reach for my GEC #42 trapper or a jack... but a stockman is just such a useful combination of blades in such a svelte package!

But, whittlers are pretty cool, especially if they include a coping blade as does this Queen,
You just really can't say "no" to a split spring whittler with a coping blade...

I lean towards the Stockman, this GEC Dixie Stockman just showed up yesterday and I am really liking it, slim and trim. The sheepsclife blade is different length and profile from your standard sheepfoot.

Stockman and Whittlers; Easily my two favorite patterns (certain variations are functionally the same - except of course for the spring configuration differences). Here are some of my most prized pocketknives. OH
