Stockman or Whittler

Sorry for the camera pics, but wanted to show my two favorite stockmans. The Schrade is most pocket friendly of the two. Lots of great pics here today. Happy Thanksgiving to my USA friends.

The Camillus 72 gets my vote. The coping blade sits lower than the stockman's sheepsfoot. And the Spey is replaced with smaller clip blade.

Rehandled in ebony.

I seem to have more whittlers than stockman so I guess I must prefer them. I am not a fan of the spey blade so when I look at Stockman pattern knives I look for them to have something other than a spey, something like a clip or pen.

I carried a Stockman for many years when I was younger. A great and versatile pattern.
Now I like me some Whittlers!

Definitely the Whittler. I despise the spey blade on the Stockmans. I like the Seahorse Whittler and of course GEC's Executive Whittler, Geppetto Whittler, and 1/2 Whittler. Perhaps also the Whittler because I collect Wharnies.

GREAT knives and pictures everyone!

I must say I'm especially taken with Old Hunter's Fighth'n Rooster. I get absolutely giddy when green bone and Solingen are combined.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

I like them both but prefer the whittler with the right blade combo. Love the stout, centered main blade and the way the blades fall when closed. One of my favorites of each pattern,

Blademan, that is a fine, fine looking Whittler - what brand and model is it? OH

I have a couple of whittlers, both tidioutes;

And a handful of stockmans;

A Fredrich Olbertz

A buck 303

And a queen 26

I don't have a favourite pattern either way, but I also like the coping and sheepsfoot blades. Which is why I would choose a congress over either of them :)

This JA Henckels whittler is my favorite of mine. I especially like the coping blade and the stag.

Stockman for the clip main & spey blade and if it has a punch all the better.:thumbup:

I'm calling it a tie.

I believe you are right. When looking at all those fine pictures- Old Hunter's in particular- it's getting more or less impossible for me to give a judgement!
Reviewing m' own modest collection I suppose the Whittler carries the day as I don't much like Spey blades, but, you can always turn em into Pens:D

The type of Stockman I most favour are those with low riding Sheepfoot such as the Queen No.26 in the 1st picture and the Böker in Yellow Smooth Bone.

The Böker Whittlers have tapered backspring whereas the Queen and RR use a divided backspring arrangement. Let's not forget the Searhorse option either.

No!! That's bad- trying to make me choose between my favourite patterns! I come across more stockman's, but the blade locations make much more sense to me in a Whittler. But both should have a punch- which is a topic for another thread, that I hope to start today.

But this fine, underrated knife seals the deal for me!

I'll try to add more pictures later!

I've never been a big fan of the Wharncliffe blade, but after looking at these great pictures, I'm kinda liking what I'm seeing! :thumbup:
