Stockman or Whittler

I prefer the whittler pattern, here is my canal street version called the cannitler. (Canoe and whittler) I have a couple of stockman knives also, but I prefer whittler over them because I like the main blade being on a side by itself. This is my current favorite traditional, but northwoods knives has a nice smaller version of the whittler knife with a wharncliff main blade.

Unfortunately for me, there are lots more choices when it comes to stockman patterns. But either way you go, have fun searching!

Stockman because of the spey blade. But, I'm probably one of the few that really use that blade for its intended purpose.

I like them both, just because I like traditional knives, though on a practical level 2 blades is enough. The craftsmanship that it takes to make a three blade design work is impressive, I think a whittler is harder to do properly. I carry this small whittler pattern at work, so as not to freak out coworkers:

...and this big stockman also at work, when I can't be bothered considering the feelings of coworkers :) [seriously, they used to the idea of me and knives]

To add to my previous post, here is a selection of most of my stockman's and whittlers, thrown together this morning. Stockman patterns are easier to find used, but they both fit the same niche, just with different flavours. I did notice that the whittler's blade configuration does come with more choice in handle shape, which does matter to me as I collect diversity! I would love to see a Eureka Whittler sone day, I've only heard of it in Levines.

I just love this picture- the lines of the Executive Whittler just work for me!

Hopefully the humpback Whittler gets back to me in good time, and better than when it left the factory- great little knife if they sharpened it and made sure the back springs aren't much wider than the blade- I could fit two business cards between bolster and spine of the master blade!

But who can't get everything done with just one or both of these:

This is just a fine looking knife:

And you can choose between spey and Sheepsfoot and still keep a punch- excuse to carry two!!

It's a tough choice, but I wanted to get 2 cents in on this thread before it rides off into the sunset.

If pressed, I carry the stockman pattern a bit more often.

If I had to choose, which fortunately I do not, I would take the stockman over the whittler. Both great patterns and when executed well they are each amazing to work with.

Here are a couple of my favorite stockmans, both Queen #9 patterns.

Whittler all the way for me. Love a good coping blade and since I have a grip of Stockman patterns I guess it's as good a reason as any to find some nice whittlers.

Peace and Love

I ordered both a whittler and a stockman just the other day. Couldn't make up my mind.

Before I have them in hand I would guess I'm a stockman kinda guy though.
