For anyone who doesn't remember, earlier this year my gear bag that I carried with me every single day was stolen out of my wifes car. That day started off as the worst day I had in a really really long time.

I came into the RAT forum just to vent my hatred for theives and my sorrow for my loss of the bag and before I knew what happened, I had everyone and their mother sending me new gear to replace my stolen bag. You wouldn't believe the amount of gear that was sent to me. I could have started my own survival store with all this stuff. It was crazy. Not only did everything that got stolen get replaced, but I ended up with way more and better stuff than I started out with. A lot of the RAT guys jumped right in, some even forced their PSK supplies on me. lol. RAT Cutlery, along with a TON of RAT members supplied me to the teeth.

For a reminder of that time, here is a link to the thread in case anyone wants to see the incredible generosity and brotherhood (and sisterhood) that this group is capable of.
And here is a link to the PSK that the RAT family built for me. Tell me this shit isn't amazing.

One item that I have used EVERY SINGLE DAY since it was sent to me is my Rat Model 1 folder. MrCoffee sent it with a shipment of replacement gear. The day it showed up, I stuck it in my pocket. Literally, there hasn't been a day that's gone by (other than when I was on the cruise with my wife and couldn't have a knife) since then that this knife hasn't been with me and used. I have taken this thing to hell and back. Surprisingly, it has more than held up. The finish looks like shit, but the knife is still perfect.

A lot of people don't prefer this folder for many reasons, the company that made it, where it was produced, etc., but I found a great friend in this knife. I actually have two of them. TexasTonyDobbs sent me one as well.

Here is the giveaway. I'm going to pass on the Rat Model 1 folder that MrCoffee gave to me to someone new. This knife still has a lot of use left in it. I promise you that if you keep it sharp and give it a chance, it won't let you down. This knife has some SERIOUSLY good joojoo all over it. It's a good luck charm. The finish definitely shows its miles, but all that means to me is character. It still locks up solid, there's no blade play at all, and it takes an edge like no tomorrow. I'll send it out clean hair popping sharp. Now since not everyone who jumped in to help me out is a RAT PACK member (Whitty, you lazy non-posting bum!), this is open to everyone.

Rules:
Post ONLY ONE REPLY!
Name something you've given to someone else that was a completely selfless gesture.

At the end of the month (the 31st) I'll pick a post # at random.

The knife is the Ontario Rat Model 1 folder with black partially serrated blade. Well... it used to have a black blade. Most of the black is gone now.

GO!!!!!!

Every knife I have ever gave away. . . maybe 20 in total, I don't know if it is selfless, because in most cases, I had a vested interest in helping people to appreciate a good knife.

My family and friends have called me the giver of Spydies:

Gave my cousin a Spyderco Native before he went off to basic

Gave my dad a Spyderco Pacific Salt for his fishing tackle

Gave my 5 grooms men engraved Spyderco Dragonflys

Gave my friend a Spyderco Native 3

Gave my Wife a Red Spyderco Ladybug (she loves the color red)

EDIT: I just read through the original thread and WOW, just WOW what a great group of people. It's an honor to be among such a caring and giving bunch, I hope I have the chance to pay it forward at some point.

well I can't list anything that was given away as a selfless gesture and expect it to gain me a free knife... otherwise it wouldn't be selfless anymore :)

But I did give myself to my wife if that counts?

I give someone the bird almost every single day, and there's absolutely nothing in it for me aside from the satisfaction of a job well done.

One of the last years I was a boy scout I gave my SAK to a new scout that came into the Troop and reminded me of myself when I first started. I explained what that knife has taught me and been though and he seemed to understand what it meant. Wonder what happen to him?

I don't know if this counts but i gave my first car to a local fire departmant like 9or 10 yearhs ago so they could use it for training

That's awesome. Sounds like a good crew around here. Well...the only thing of merit I give away is ocassional minor maintenance automotive repair "clinics" for people I go to school with. College kids are looking to save money any way they can and I used to work as a fleet mechanic before wising up and returning to college, so I take a weekend and teach people who are interested how to repair and maintain their vehicles. I give them access to my drive-way and tools and I will usually help with the repairs. We're talking A/C, brakes, preventive maintenance, minor engine repair, etc. This saves otherwise screwed college kids hundreds on labor alone.

gave each of the four guys on my shift a balisong to get them into flipping-:D

I already have one but i wanted to say your a good dude for passing along your good will.......Drew

When I was tech school (Air Force), I became good friends with a guy who lived a couple doors from me. He was a really good guy.

Well, one day, it was his turn to PCS to his permanent duty station. He had a fair amount of stuff that he had to pack, but he had lost his duffle bag.

That duffle bag could hold all his stuff, and the BX was out of them. He was kinda stressed out by the whole ordeal; so I just gave him my duffle bag for free.

He was very thankful for that gesture. But, hey, what are friends for?

I gave a Boker Trance to my roommate last year in hopes of converting him to a knifeaholic. He never carried it, but he used it more than i did.

I've been sharpening up all of my mom's kitchen knives since they're dangerously dull and it'd probably be even better just to replace them.

I love knives so I try to make as much knives lovers as I can, so everytime is a nephew's bithday I gave a folder to them along with their present.

Gave free flying lessons (all included) to someone who was too poor to pay his. He now is a pilot for a big airline. Will never regret it.

RAT Pack #75

When I was in High school, I gave my girlfriend at the time's little brother one of my better fixed blades. They had plenty of woods behind them for him to go out and have a blast, but his mom was way over protective and wouldn't let him have a knife. I didn't really have any great blades, but I gave him what I had! He knew how to handle knives safely, I had let him use mine before and he was a smart kid....I didn't have any problems giving him a knife to go use in the woods!

I don't know about 'selfless'. I have given several away to friends though. Most recently was an olive alox vic cadet, I had my friends initials engraved on the side plate and gave it to him.

I have a friend at work who is nuts about fishing and needed a very small trolling motor, but couldn't afford it. I found an old Shakespeare 12V trolling motor in my work shop rafters and gave it to him. Works perfectly. He literally jumped for joy:D Especially when I said he didn't owe me a cent, just to use it and enjoy it.

First of all I think its great that all the RAT members look out for each other, second I'm sure that there are tons of worthy RAT packers out there. So heres my story... I was a highschool coach in San Antonio for 7 years, it was an inner city school and it was in a real bad neighborhood. I befriended a young man named james who was strong as a bull , but had the mental capacity of a 9 year old. For 4 years I helped him with all his school work and made it my personal mission to see him graduate. In his junior year I entered him in a contest for special needs children that won him a home computer, needless to say his family was totally floored when I showed up at his house with it. His senior year I paid for all his pictures and invitations for graduation , and bought him his class ring. My wife and I treated him like one of our family, and would take thankgiving dinner to his family every year.
I will never forget the satisfaction I got from seeing him happy, he had a tough life and I was glad to be there for him.
I told this story because seeing all the people who came forward to help a friend in need reminded me of James.
Also, I didnt tell this story to get a free knife, I dont even want to be considered for it. I just thought it was a good reminder that there a good people who enjoy helping their fellow man, and I hope they continue to do so.
