this is a darn good thread to read on shipping knives !!!
there are good idea's discussed here!
last post has what to do if any thing is ever missing from a package you ship!
which is call postal inspectors at 877-876-2455
and use registered mail for high value packages
updated per suggestion
'missing' knives
Gulp..guys..
i had sent several packages the same day,
i had recalled paying ins on one and thought it was that one
when i called the post office and
later i discovered it was not the damaged package that had ins .
.how ever
i was up set on being told ins was mainly on missing packages..
for damageyou had to be able to show that the package
was packed and warped properly
is what i was told
as handling could make a hole in a improperly wrapped package...
ie: even with ins you have to show it was properly packed
and that items lost out of damaged packages should have some verification such as a list of being there..!

stolen from mail the reason i jumped to that-
is it was reported by the person i sent them to that labeling tape which i KNOW was on all of the knives was missing from several knives !
also several knives which were fassoned together were not on opening the box

a hole was in a large box and these are missing
two bg42 - G10's
with NO box, paper work or sheaths

i have yet to hear of any of these being sold with out the 'stuff'..
if any one hears of one for sale with out stuff
please let me know
thx, dave

i dont think that will happen..
realy had that sick tummy feeling when got news last nite
at first thought it was only one but checked and i had put two in..

Thats terrible... I got a priority box yesterday that had my 4 dot 110 in it, and someone had poked a big hole in the side. Fortunately everything was wrapped in paper and it was in the sheath so they probably didn't think much was in there...
Will keep a close eye out for ya, I'm on the bay about 20 times a day..
Sounds like usps has some thieves workin there. Sure is a waste of money insuring things it seems

Dave,
Sorry to hear about that!

Movers stole about $4k of knives from me on the last move, still pi$$es me off so I know how you feel.

Justice is not common enough these days.

Yep ,it sucks royal to lose a knife this way,let alone all your 110's,been there had it happen to me,insurance paid me well, but those knives are /were hard to replace.Sorry Dave..

I don't understand why the Post office insurance wont pay, sense there was a hole in the package. When you insure a package they just ask me the value not the inventory.
That makes me wander about p.o.Ins.

Dave: The Post Office indicated that you had no proof of inventory? Do you know what sort of proof they would accept? Would it be pictures, write-ups, etc.? I'm like Hill Bob - that makes me nervous about shipping with insurance.

Another good reason to wrap everything overly thoroughly, tape the wrapping around, fill the box with paper and plastic.

Maybe we do need to photograph and list the contents, maybe tape a list of contents inside the box.

Dave,

I talked to the post office guys today when I was there. First thing they said is appeal it up higher at your post office. Second, have them check at your local office in the drop box. Postal Inspectors are like the gestopo and most folks will put it in the drop box/lost and found if it was a tear type thing and not actually stolen. If it happened in transit and they will eventually find their way to one of the two national lost mail centers. Your Post Office can give you info on that.

I hope you get them back, they are hard to replace and a good lump to take finacially. But do appeal the first ruling. g

gulp..
i stand corrected guys..
i had sent several packages the same day
this morn i found a ins form for a package for that same day
i dont wright names on my forums yea i know i should
seems i have been doing a number of things i should think on

and that items lost out of damaged packages should have some verification of being there to start..!

they took the number and told me to call back..
i was out so stopped in at noon..
seems the insured package was delivered
BUT to a diff city ..

so it seems i had gotten ins but on the wrong package..
another sick feeling of having goofed up.
.been doing that a lot lately also
i did not know of the lost found thing but will check on that..

I quess I'm wrong, but: I thought that if'n I shipped USPO, and I insured the package for say $100, if the package failed to arrive or arrived damaged or stolen from, the PO would just give me the $100. If thats not true, the PO is rippin' us off.

Snotwad- reread Daves post. They wont pay anything if you dont insure, even if you insure a different package...

334, I sold one of those w/o a box papers etc..................................................................................................................................................................................

but it was back in December :D
Good luck with this! Slow down and think things through! I hope these show up for you. When I ship stuff like that I tape them down (after wrapping them) to the inside of the box! Thanks for another "standing corrected thread" :D ;)

...I'd like to think that's the case Snotwad as I just sent off a package insured for $400 to someone...After reading all this

I'm also rethinking whether I'm throwing away good money for useless insurance or not......

Hey Guys,
Lets hear how you wrap for shipment , we may pick up pointers.
I can tell you, I buy bubble wrap and clear tape to keep on hand and to those of you who have received a package of mine you know I like to use a bunch of both. A crook is going to have to cut thru several tape layers to get in my packages........300Bucks

 Bubble wrap, rolls of foam, or even newspaper. Never just the items!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then tape them to the inside of package, and fill box with more padding! I never mail in a padded envelope!

Also they say "the machines" can damage packages, as well as other packages. There really isnt any "proof" that they were stolen, unless there's a conspiracy and someone at the P.O. knew that they were in there :D
I have had packages delivered messed up and missing stuff, and I can guarantee you they arent stealing $3.00 childrens books

Its also possible that if the knives were shipped alone, a fall could have knocked them through, depending on the box I guess.
Stolen? Lost? At this point I would say its all speculation... I need to go find my tin foil hat now :D The package should have been insured, then the original post would stand. Since 334 "stands corrected" you really can't blame the P.O. for not paying....

334 maybe you should edit your original post to something more like the truth? Seems guys are missing some of the info.

...There's a pretty good discussion of the topic of "Insuring Shipments" going on right HERE...Makes me pause to wonder about the wisdom of insuring anything the way it's now laid out...

Wrap the knife and put it in its box. Wrap the box around and around with crumbled newspaper and plastic grocery bags (for waterproofing) and taple all around that. Fill the outer mailing box with crumpled paper and plastic tightly enough that when it's closed, you can shake it in every direction and not hear or feel anything move.

A thief cannot get to the contents without actually opening the whole box, and the sorting process, manual and machine, will not knock the contents out even if the machines might tear the outer box.

One more safety check: After you wrap the knife box but before you put it in the outer box with filler all around, tape to it a label FROM your name & address TO your destination's name & address. Now if the outer label is damaged, the lost & found can retrieve the information and send it on its way.

I most always use a box, it seems when a padded envelope is used there is
always a rip in it and sometime the contents are gone, I like to bubble wrap the contents and then tape them to the inside of box and use newspaper or packing for filler. I then tape all seams and edges of outside of box and put clear tape over my return address and the address i'm shipping to.
