I'm posting this for Rob Blanton. He received an empty box from FedEx Here's what he had to say about the knife and package.

"The knife is a Joe Kious Double Door Automatic Pocket Locket engraved by Ray Cover. I received the Federal Express overnight package today 02/19/07 from Ray, and the seam on the side of the box was not sealed and a small amount of bubble wrap was sticking out of the box. Upon opening the package it was empty except for packing peanuts and a piece of bubble wrap. Thanks for your help."

Contact Rob Blanton of Elite Custom Knives robknives@aol.com or Ray Cover if you see this knife.

Too many stolen knives lately:(

Oh man, I'm sick on this one. I know how much Rob wanted this, as we talked about a photo. Let's pray for insurance coverage if not a return.

Oh man :( I was just looking at this knife on the website. I can't believe it was lifted :( Will keep my eyes open.

Lets hope that insurance covers it... I think FEDEX, UPS, and the USPS need to start getting hammered everytime one of these comes up missing. Maybe we should start shippin 10 dollar cheapies around to each other and insure them for 500 each time and make it known what's in the box and just start hitting them back for all the works of art like this one that get gone.

When they start coughin up 500+ each time I bet they'll figure out who's got sticky fingers...

Sorry to hear of the loss.... but I don't really consider that a knife... to me a knife is a tool to be used... That my friend is ART.... In every way.

Very sorry to hear this. This thread should be copied or moved to GB&U in case the knife ever shows up for sale.

You can insure a package for as much as you want, but you will have to prove that what was in it was worth $500.00 before any of those companies will even consider paying.

Hearing about yet another stolen knife makes me so f'ing angry. This is friggin' ridiculous. Do they put their employees through any kind of pre-employment background check or will they hire anyone? Unreal...

There's got to be something we can do as an industry to help put a stop to this.
Even if it's insured it's not like you can just replace it. In most cases the knives are one of a kind.
By the way, it's been 3 weeks since my lost and haven’t heard anything from the insurer, Continental or TSA. Anyone surprised?

Rob is a great guy and a pleasure to do business with.

He must have some crappy delivery people in his area. I sent him a cashiers check once via USPS and his mailman apparently delivered it to the wrong house and it was never to be heard of again. Had to cancel the check and send a new one. Nothing like having to wait a few extra days for that knife that you sold everthing else you own to buy.

Rob will take this in stride and keep being the same nice guy he always has been. Sorry to hear this happened.

Just makes me sick! And what a knife to lose...everything Kious makes is beautiful (and basically an instant classic).

All I can do is keep my eyes and ears open.

Yep... I feel for ya! I worked at one of the bulk USPS centers many years ago. Theft from employee's was a common everyday occurence!!! I seen it but, said nothing as I was Fearful they might go Postal on me if I snitched them out! They also loved to rip open Girlie Mags for a look see! I even seen them rip open other things to see if anything valuable was inside. Not as bad as Overseas Postal services but, it does happen!

This makes me sick as well! This is happening way to often! I hope and pray that insurance will cover it OR that the knife shows up!

Just aweful.

You cannot trust anyone to deliver your package undamaged, un-opened. Period.

Apperantly it's cheaper for them to not have background checks or a decent security department than to pay off on the losses. And they will fight every loss that they can. They will use every loophole that they can.

Ya got it on the nail head! My carrior USPS mind you.. used to park up the street & read my knife catalogs! I did not snitch on the Booger as he still delivered it after he read it!

First, spring for USPS Registered Mail. Loss from registered mail is extremely rare because only veteran postal workers are allowed near it and a log is kept of who touches it. Registered mail just does not cost that much more when you're talking about a high-end knife.

Second, double-box the knife. Wrap the knife is bubble wrap and put it into a small box with enough curls to keep it from rattling around. Seal that box shut with tape on all seams. Duplicate the name and address and write the tracking number on the outside of it. Then, put that box into a larger box surrounded by packing curls. This way, a thief can't just slit one seam and slip the knife out even making it look like the tape came open in handling.

Third, makers and dealers who ship high-value knives should use Pilfer-proof tape or Tamper-evident tape. It costs a few cents more, but it's well worth it. And tape all seams of the box.

ULine, a company I will endorse, wants $40 for a 60-yard roll of the tamper-evident tape. That's pretty pricey for shipping tape. But sixty yards is enough to completely tape all seams on the size of box that's typically used for pocket knives thirty or fourty times over. So, it's about a dollar a knife.

Just to make sure more folks see this I'll bump it back to the top. For the record, I will not use FedEx or UPS, had problems with both. USPS Express overnight has done me very good for the last 10 - 12 years with no problems.

Gollnick, good idea about the double boxing and other points.
