Stolen Knife

Yep! Ups took over 2 years to pay! USPS Express has worked well for me. I'll Keep my eyes and ears open Don! Mike

Third, makers and dealers who ship high-value knives should use Pilfer-proof tape or Tamper-evident tape. It costs a few cents more, but it's well worth it. And tape all seams of the box.

ULine, a company I will endorse, wants $40 for a 60-yard roll of the tamper-evident tape. That's pretty pricey for shipping tape. But sixty yards is enough to completely tape all seams on the size of box that's typically used for pocket knives thirty or fourty times over. So, it's about a dollar a knife.

I completely agree with all your shipping recommendations including ULine who I also use. They make great products and considering what you're shipping it's worth the extra to make sure it gets there.

I agree...this one is like "the club" on cars. Make it so its not worth their risk to bother by wrapping so absurdly that its blatent that it was stolen rather than "you wrapped wrong and it fell out of the box." Im talking about multiple layers of tape, boxing, anything...I had a knife shipped to me that had wire wrapped between the layers of duct tape and it took me 15 minutes to open it...i doubt they'd be willing to spend that much time as I assume these are mainly crimes of oppurtunity. Another important factor? Put your actual name on the return address. My guess is "Dave Schott's Custom High End Expensive Knives" on the return label of a knife shaped box is a lot more appealing than a simple brown box thats the shape of a VHS cassette with just my name on the return label rather than a business label

I'm posting this for Rob Blanton. He received an empty box from FedEx

If it was FedEx, it got scanned. If it went overnight, it probably didn't go through many hubs (I'm guessing). Tracking data would help determine where it could have been lost.

Horrible tale indeed! And all our (largely efficient) post-offices in the EU must be privatized now, sounds like a thieves' charter. The Japanese Post Office is THE most efficient, fastest and most reliable on earth.(like their cars..)We could all learn etc.
Hope the knife gets found or re-made, best of lucK.

Haha niiiice. I wonder what customers would think if my knives arrived in boxes with a "Schott's Pubic Hair Collection Agency." return label. I doubt many would get opened but i bet the postal guy would think twice when i insured it for 500$

Seriously though, this is an awful story and an amzing knife. I find it hard to beleive a die-hard high end knife collector works pushing boxes at fedex, though....my guess is this one appears on the second market or some lucky schmuck gets it at a pawn shop.....BOOOO

Seriously, a label like that will go a long way to prevent loss. A box the size of a paperback thriller or a large matchbox to a single name residential address won't get a second look.

We need to keep this one on the first page a little longer. Rob and Leta Blanton are great people and I hate to see this happen to them.

A similar problem happened with UPS workers stealing handguns a few years back forcing the company to restrict shipping them to overnight express.
I have also had better luck with the postal system as far as shipping high-dollar items, and as stated above, always double wrap them with a copy of the shipping address inside.
