Stonewashed Cryo

So my new Cryo came in yesterday. I had to send the first one back because the blade centering was so far off. This one came nicely "almost" centered and using the paper trick I was able to adjust the blade to be basically perfectly centered. Thanks for that tip! This little baby is SOLID! I love it! And for $31 it gives my Hinderer something to think about. I mean seriously! It costs less than a new scale for my XM-18!!! So, after an initial disappointment in having to return my first order and wait a week I can also now say that this knife does ROCK. And the price is ridiculous! I bought this for a travel knife for checked baggage so I don't risk losing my Hinderer or CRKs but this little knife is going to get some pocket time too. Seriously, what a great and fun little knife!!!!!

Anyway, here it is. I stonewashed it because I just like that look on all my knives...

That looks outstanding! I really like how the scales turned out...
What do you think of a rock tumbler and ceramic media? Or do you prefer river rock and a dryer tumble?

Looks fantastic!

It's so easy. Just take the knife apart and put the handles back together using the two screws and spacers. This is to protect the insides of the scales and the lockbar. I use a small flat LEGO piece and slide it into the handles to push the lockbar out so that it gets stonewashed all the way down as well. This is how it will look (you can see a little bit of the lego peeking out through the pivot hole).

Get a strong flexible container, I use a small bike waterbottle but a juice bottle or something like that works too. Find a bunch of small rocks,, large gravel size, that are round and smooth. No hard edges. Soft edges are best. The rounder the better really. They should be varying size from large marble down. You'll need about 15-20 rocks. Put everything in the bottle and spray a bunch of WD-40 into the bottle. Make a small puddle of WD-40. Seal it up, throw it into the center of a sleeping bag so it won't fall out, throw it in the dryer at low or NO heat and roll it for 45 minutes. That's it.

Here's a picture of the stonewashing kit. (The quarter is in there just for a size reference for the stones)

Kershaw really knocked this one out of the ball park. It's a real giant killer for sure.

Nice. I would have taped the insides and done it without the screws but the result on the scales is outstanding! I was just waiting to see a thread like this. Thanks for sharing. :D

Looks great, you should of removed the black screws though :)

Yeah, I tried to figure that out but from my experience using the screws and spacers is really the best way. Tape doesn't stay on in the stonewashing process and the lock face needs to be protected. The WD-40 just dissolves the adhesive from any tape and the tape just falls off. I tried covering the black screws with super duper sticky tape that I cut tiny circles from but that obviously didn't work. I learned to stonewash on my Sebenza and I've done it many times in the process of learning how to anodize Titanium, so I have an extra set of beat up screws and spacers just for stonewashing Sebenzas. I wonder what it would take to get 4 new screws? I could write to Kershaw's customer service department and ask I guess but I don't really mind the look.

I read a post by one person who screws his handles down to a piece of wood to protect the inside of the scale and the lock face. That would be a good thing to try if you want to keep the black screws safe. I didn't really care about that.

looks awesome, i need to try your method, seems simple and looks awesome.

but if i may ask, how/where did you get it for $31?

Hmmm... maybe I can't post where i bought it from because it could be deal spotting? All I can say is just do a google search on Kershaw Cryo. (But I see the price has gone up to $42). Stonewashing IS simple. I posted a new photo of the stonewashing "kit" on Page 1.

That does look nice.

Maybe some small tapered wood screws that would be flush or counter-sunk into a thin piece of wood to hold the scales? I think that would work.

Yes, that's a good idea! I was impatient... leaving in a couple of hours for a 2 week vacation and the Cryo is my "travel" knife....
