Storm Cloud is Out!

I like the tip grind. It is reminiscent of what spyderco did with the Vallotton and even the Lum tanto. Very strong tip but still ground to cut.

Gotta love a good CS tanto. I've never had one with a thumb plate. That may have to change this year.

I am not aware of a deep carry subdued clip alternative for the shiny one that the storm cloud comes with. Anybody know of one? The hole pattern on spyderco does not match up, but does anybody have another maker's clip that aligns (I have to dig out a benchmade or something else to see if I have something). Just looking for info.

After receiving mine, I agree with the above. I don't like the blade. I do like the handle even if the shiny finish isn't my favorite.
The silly convex grind they're doing at the tip like the Spyderco Vallotton and several WE Knives...it's clearly done by hand and it's sloppy. Not even close to symmetrical. The main portion of the edge is not ground especially thin as I expected.
Small gap between lockbar and scale. Some lock stick.
Already boxed mine up for a return.

How does the carbon fiber over g10 look and feel? That was always what scared me away from the night force. I haven't seen it in person, but for some reason I immediately think of a some kind of jc whitney carbon fiber sticker kit on the dash of an old civic.

Yeah the cf laminate looks cheesey and it's slick. But the lack of traction doesn't matter as much when you've got big finger grooves, IMO. There's something to say for a knife that slides in and out of the pocket easily.

What a disappointment. I can't say i'm surprised tho, the whole 2018 lineup is a joke. I hate that kind of grind on the tip, especially when it's coupled with a standard grind that transitions into it. Cold steel where clearly drunk when they brainstormed ideas for 2018.

That's too bad.

So weird that yours is such a gong show. I would have expected the first releases of such an anticipated (and friggin’ expensive for a Cold Steel folder) new model would be stellar.

All of my Cold Steels are very recently manufactured and rock solid in every way (a couple of Recon 1’s, an American Lawman and a Rajah III).

I was looking forward to this one, but ima gonna pass.

Maybe they just tried too hard on the Storm Cloud. The Recon tanto is very functional, unadorned grippy G10, XHP (or s35vn now?), etc. I'm not a fan of the glass-like CF on the storm cloud, and the tolerances on the lock bar are wonky (but at least it works ok). I like the convex tip grind for how I use the front of a tanto blade, but I would have been just as happy with a standard Recon-type grind. 20CV is a great steel, so we'll see how it holds up (I plan to put a better edge on mine than what it came out of the box with), but I loved what CS did with XHP (and wish they were not switching again). The storm cloud needed to be more special than what it sounds like most posters are finding. Is CS listening?

With the similarity to the Night Force (at least handle-wise), you'd think it would have come out without a hitch

I haven't handled this knife , so just going by second hand info : the "Storm Cloud" seems like a knife with no clear target market .

If this is supposedly an upscale offering , it falls short on quality components and finish , QC etc for the price point .

Neither does it compete well for as a functional working (or "tactical") knife against CS's own fine G10 folders with XHP .

So this Storm Cloud seems to be thunder with no lightning , and all wet .

Maybe if the handle scales , etc could be done better ?
