So......BarberFobic1992 asked me to make a knife for him. Normally I am not sure what to think about that, but this particular design was interesting......bushcrafting and all. So, I decided to try it.

BarberFobic1992 sent me a sketch and a block of curly birch.

You are either going to love this style knife, or hate it. If you hate it, that is cool. But, if you like this style.....do you have any feedback? A lot of members here have helped me tweak designs......so go ahead and fire away!

Here is the progress.

That is really unique. I really does remind me of the smaller pukko knives with their barrel shaped handles that are wider than the blade. What makes this unique is that it captures the same attributes but has a full tang. The feature is probably, over-engineered. But if you snapped the tang on this one, I'd give you award!

Looks like about 3.5" blade?

I have to say I really like the look. I don't like the look of the blade + tang without the handle, but it looks great with the handle. I like the fact the handle lacks the aggressive contouring found on your other bushy. Yours feels good Brian, but I have handled other blades with contours and just didn't like where those bumps fit on the grip. In the end I prefer a simple handle shape like this one has and can see it being used for many grips.

I'd probably recommend a ramp of the handle at the blade junction on this one. That would be my only change. As I look at it more, I think I like it better then your regular bushcraft. I see this one as a small pukko that works in conjunction with another chopper. A distinctly different role than your bushcraft model which is more of a stand alone knife.

I like it - I like it alot!

I like it. Looks like with use people would grow onto it more. I would just be afraid of my hand slipping up on the blade, but I doubt I would ever be in that situation.

Fantastic work, Brian! That's just how I thought it'd come out. The blade shape is right on. The handle shape isn't overly long but looks like it fills the hand well. It does look like the rear is thicker than the front though, which is sometimes uncomfortable for me. That, and possibly ramping the front of the slabs, are the only two changes I might make.

But superb work! I'll definitely be ordering one from you in the not too distant future, maybe with those changes.

Great job Brian! I am really surprised that you got such a great looking blade from my sketch. I just need to order the liner and some leather, then I'll have all the fixins' for a good sheath. The sheath is also going to be a traditional style, to match the knife. Be expecting lots of pics! I am sure this blade wont be leaving my side for a while (once i get it that is). I dont think I'll be able to justify any more knives in this class for a really long time (if ever).

Congrats Brian, you just cured another knife addict!

I'll elaborate on some of the thoughts and considerations that went into designing the knife when I do the review, just to keep it all together. But mainly, I figured that the simpler it is, the more versatile it is going to be.

Barberfobic,

Congrats! That is a great looking knife. It's a "3 opener" in my book, I opened the thread 3 times to look at it again...

Hahaha! That is the same thing I said! When he sent me the drawing and asked for my thoughts, I said "that thing is going to look funny with no handles. But, you won't realize it once they are on." :D

That really sums it up. I like contoured handles that fit well, but you really can't beat the simple barrel handles for versatility, and comfort in various grips over long use.

It is a fine looking user BF .

ETA: I have a feeling HD will love this knife. :)

The curly birch isn't much to look at in block form, but it sure looks nice when its polished up like that

I love this knife! I keep coming back to look at it. The handle profile looks comfy and versatile, and, as for the blade, well, scandis can do no wrong in my opinion.

On top of all that, the knife just looks nice, thanks in no small part to that sweet chunk of birch.

This looks like a winner to me. I look forward to hearing some in-use stories.

All the best,

- Mike

What an excellent looking knife.......... the only thing left to do is write "USER" all over it with a felt tip marker.... cause thats all I see when I look at it. Great job bringing Barber's vision to life!
