Straight handled Satin Jack vs. non Straight?

Ok,for all of you nay sayers that have a SJ, and prefer the SJTAC, I will trade you a SJTAC for your SJ and I dont even care if yours has been used:)

Smoking pics Oeser:eek::cool:

I'd definitely trade an SJTAC for an SJ. I don't know which one I prefer, but I know which one costs more :p

but to me the center swell in the tacky Jack feels like holding and squeezing a golf ball:thumbup::D

not if you grind down the spine side of it. for me it's the palm side swell that kills the tac handles: but it's still better than the 3rd gen. I'd rather have a large solid grip handle be a little uncomfortable than a grip that's so small it moves around in my hand.

Personally I don't really like the tac handles, the swamp rat style handles are WAY ahead of them as far as correct ergonomics. The harry carry and the ratmandu have what I consider to be one of the best grips in the knife industry - the finger swell is large enough to get a solid purchase on it, the palm swell is set farther towards the pommel for a correct anatomical position in the palm (unlike the active duty that puts the palm swell AT YOUR PINKY ) and it isn't so severe that it bites into your metacarpals.

Jerry's handles tend to go towards extremes instead of taking the middle of the road approach that the swamp rat style takes (specific to the ratmandu, not the massively curved ones on the ratweiler). as such they always have little problems here and there. For me the problems with the tac handles are less severe then the ones with the 3rd gen handles.

Those straight handle knives are waaaaaaay overrated. The tac handle sj is better and cheaper.

I ssay buy the sjtac and give it a try, if you dont like it sell it and go for the overrated overpriced straight handle version.

And yes, i have owned both and sold the shsj and kept the sjtac.

Right on Brother me to!!!

ok, see neither of us really like the tac:)

I wear a large to extra large glove depending on the cut and whether or not they have been soaked in blood:):D

but seriously, the the SJ is a great size especially in fall to winter when I usually try and have on a pair of gloves.

THe ratmandu rocks. I have to agree with you there. Its darn near perfect. If it was "INFI" , Satin and had Black paper it would be:thumbup:

Also, for the new guys, this to me and many here is an age old debate that has been going on since before I got here. I aint trying to start a war...just keeping it real:D

Btw, No one has taken me up on my offer either;)

Now your cooking Brother, a "INFIMANDU" and I still say NO on the SJ, to small for my mits. Kinda like trying to hold on to a twig, I'll take a limb...

Get a SJT. I really don't think hundreds of dollars is worth it for the SJ. The only knife with that handle I ever really liked was the PD. That handle size seems much better suited to smaller knives. To each his own though.

This SJ smear campaign is really upsetting me!!! Where's Uncle_Jar......er, never mind. :foot:

They really are two completely different blades so comparing them is useless. They are alike in name only and that's it.

They are very different in feel. I much prefer the SHSJ but the SJTAC (with mags) is growing on me.

I have found in life that you get what you pay for:cool::thumbup:

I will agree that pound per pound that the SJTAC is a better buy per inch of infi:)

Still doenst mean that pound per pound that its the best knife or that Id rather have it:p;):)

Just saying, Garth and crew are good, but "THE Boss" aint grinding anymore and thats worth a lot.

Thanks brother,

Its why I withdrew my Skinny Jack .187" with penetrator tip. Um mmum, good.

Now to beat that coating off:)

You don't want no SJ, Colonel; They never came in Bama Clay.:D;)

Eh, I still like Bama Clay, but the new sandpaper version of it kinda sucks, so I've allowed my eyes to wander and lust after some other color combos.

And I've been using this screen name in various places since high school - I've heard the Colonel Mustard line a few times in my life ;)

Colonel Mustard, in the Lobby (of the Waverly?), with the knife (naturally) :p

+1

I agree with most of that a LOT.
I LOVE the RMD's handle - although I would prefer the lanyard hole at the bottom of the pommel.
The Hairy Carry is basically the same profile, but smaller. Unfortunately, a bit too small for my hands. I keep "considering" grinding the grip area forward into the guard to increase handle grip area on the HC.

Personally, I did NOT like the SJTAC much at all when I first recieved and first held. But, I knew I liked the SJTAC's blade shape.

After much consideration, I decided the SJTAC would be improved GREATLY by removing the top thump ramp. In the process, I tweaked a few other curves and bumps including reducing a bit of the palm swell and was able to make the SJTAC handle VERY comfortable.

So, with modifications, the SJTAC handle "CAN" be VERY comfortable. And personally, I LOVE the SJTAC's blade.

Ironically, my two favorite mid-sized Busse and kin knives between 5" - 7" blades are my "modified" SJTAC and my RMD.

Further irony, if I overlay my RMD on top of my modified SJTAC, they are fairly close now in general handle shape from side profile.

Sometimes it is worth to look at what something "CAN" be. ;) - In the case of the SJTAC, the mods are pretty simple and the end result is WELL WORTH the efforts IMO.
