This is something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile now, but didn’t have the Extrema Ratio knife to do it. (That and I’m bored today.) This isn’t so much of a “review,” but more of a pictorial comparison. Strider knives have long been perceived as bullet-proof knives. The Extrema Ratio knives are getting a reputation as strong folders and are getting attention with their new folder line-up. Many people have asked how an ER folder would compare to a Strider, so here it is. The pics are nothing fancy, I’m still messing with my new digital camera. (But I did figure out the macro feature).

If any of the specs are wrong on either blade, you ER or Strider people let me know.

Anyway – here’s two pocket beasts – enjoy.

The Specs:

Strider AR:
Overall Length: 8.5"
Blade Length: 4.00"
Blade Thickness: .189" (by calipers)
Blade Style: Spear Point
Finish: Tiger Stripe
handle: G-10
Blade: BG-42
Liner Lock
Price: $350 (from Strider)

Extrema Ratio M.P.C.:
Overall lenth: 10.23"
Blade Length: 4.52" Partially Serrated N690 Cobalt Stainless Blade
Blade Thickness: .239" (by calipers)
Blade Style: Drop point
Finish: Testudo
Length Closed: 5.75"
Anticordal aluminum handle
Lockback, with Cross Bolt Safety Locking feature
Price: $319 (from ER)

(both specs were borrowed from their respective websites.)

:D

Both of them side by side:

Another side-by-side shot -- the three extra screws on the ER are to move the clip for ambidextrous use:

Picture from above: The AR's space between the handle and blade is from the washers (in other words, it's supposed to be that way). It comes with a single thumb stud, and the ER comes with double studs.

I know, it's a little blurry. :grumpy:

Here's a picture of the "bottom" of the knives. Both of them have "tip-up" carry clips.

I dunno about you, but the Extrema Ratio one is man butt ugly. :p

Whoa.

Awesome pics! Thank you for posting those!

Any folder that can give a GB/AR a run for its money size-wise is quite a large folder indeed!

Two issues I have with the ER folders:

1) None of them, particularly the one pictured here, "flow" very well. They do not, IMO, have clean, smooth, flowing lines. They are in stark contrast to my ER Harpoon F, which has nice lines. I'm not wild about the ER folders, but they do interest me.

2) It will be interesting to see how they stand up to real-life use. Striders have been there, done all that, and have a house full of t-shirts; they are proven. I'm interested to see how the ERs perform.

"Top" of ER as it would be carried in your pocket: (man this is getting boring already! :D

Love that macro feature! Here's the lock up on the ER -- both of the pieces of .25 steel lock up against each other:

I have not seen many (I know that there may be more) that are thicker than the Strider, but that ER is THICK!!! Nice comparison.

Pic of linerlock on Strider (once again, the dirt is from carry). The according to my calipers, the liner catches at .007":

Okay ladies and gentlemen -- I think that's it for now. I hope you enjoyed my show, I successfully wasted some good "work" time doing this. ;)

I tried to take pictures of both at the same angles on the knife pictures to give you all a good perspective. Thanks for looking. :D

Good job! Those are good pics. Be sure to give us a review/written comparison if you get a chance!

Um, you should probably send your AR back in to Strider. Your liner probably shouldn't look like that.

Mine catches all the way.

Good deal, hopefully others are set more inside -- I wasn't too impressed with the small amount of "catch." It would have been nice to take the pics with a brand new AR, but I didn't have one. :( :D
