My first strider was an SNG DGG with a FFG. Old lock up, but newest generation at the time, right before they introduced the new lock up. It rattled pretty bad, and the lock just simply slipped around. It wouldn't disengage, but it wasn't a rock solid lock up. By rattle I mean the classic up and down Strider rattle.

Thought that was bad, got a MSC Custom SNG dagger grind next...really liked the design but couldn't stand the rattle. Thought if I put in a little more money, maybe the custom would fix it, alas the custom was still a super slight curve, and the lock up did not rattle, however the lock bar was probably not treated or something and it kept slipping if tried to push the spine at all. It wasn't terrible or anything, but at $8-900, the knife had better be perfect because I was getting better lock up on my $300 sebenza.... So not really play so much as a little flex or untreated lock face allowing me to move the blade up and down and have the lock consistently slip.

I picked up one of the new lock face Striders SNGs more recently, and lock was solid for me, on play in any direction.

Gist of this is both of my Striders, production and custom, before the new lock face was introduced suffered from some sort of lock issue regarding up and down play and the lock moving around as a result of this. New lock face seems to have fixed the problem, but I did not keep mine for an extended amount of time so I cannot comment on the longevity of the solid lock up.

3 old style lock up SNG'S with no blade play but lock stick while they broke in. 4 new lock up SNG'S which were all perfect out of the box. Developed a sticky lock for a while then nothing after further breaking in. Never blade play on either version. I may not have kept the old style lock up versions long enough for it to develop.

Wish I could get ahold of them. I have sent 3 emails within the last 3 weeks and haven't got a single reply yet and they don't seem to have a phone number on there sight so I can't get ahold of them at all. It's quite frustrating

This sounds backwards? I don't see how side to side play would go away after use which would be horizontal right? UOTE=knife2Agunfight;12759061]Strider SNG Lego Tiger Striped - Started with vertical and horizontal blade play. Sent to Strider. Fixed vertical, horizontal still prevalent. After flicking the knife open a few hundred times and using it; horizontal blade play went away. Super tight lock-up now.

Strider SMF DGG Black Coated - No vertical, but there is horizontal. Knife is still in break-in period.[/QUOTE]

I've got a current model SNG: stonewashed blade, stonewashed ti, ranger green G10. Rock solid lockup. No play in any direction.

Present count is 3 SMFs, all with the old lock geometry, 6 SnGs, 1 with the new lock geometry and the remainder with the old, and one Dwyer custom SMF.........no lock rock or blade play in any of 'em.

Well its not good for business if a customer walks in and gets disappointed when most other brands didnt wiggle.

serious, if they had no play I would own at least 3 by now.

exactly what causes bladeplay and how can it be fixed? Im fixing for one but cant.

hanoverfiste, your avatar brings me much memories as a teen. Love that movie.

I probably should have read the entire thread, but do you mean the lock slips (lock-rock) or there is up/down or side to side blade play? Tighten the pivot a bit if it's blade play, or send it in if it's lock rock. The old-style tang was convex (concave if opened) which cause a small contact area on the lock-bar. The lock-bar would not wear quickly enough to compensate for the curvature of the tang and would slip. The fix on the older models was to send it in for a new press-fit stop pin, which would cause an earlier lockup and contact with a more shallow section of the tang. The pins are conical, and not capped.

I have 8-10 Strider folders and none of them developed lock-rock, but I am very easy on my knives.

I'd also add that most of the frame-locks I've had (other than Striders) have developed lock-rock or blade play. I had a Spyderco Tuff that would fail with 10-20lbs pressure on the spine when open. An Umnumzaan that did the same. No frame lock is infallible. I am partial to well-built lock-backs like Demkos, Benchmade Axis, and the Spydie Compression Lock.

I've owned four SmFs and six SnGs and loved them all.....none had any blade play. The only reason I don't own any currently is I've found other blade styles/shapes that are more to my liking but the bomb-proof dependability of Striders was never a question.
