Strider prices going up?

I traded for a strider SNG I like the knife and the ergos are great really nice knife . That said I will not pay 450 or more on a knife that the lock stick and it's hard to disengage the lock . I have ZT knives way much smother and the lock are easy to open and close . The Stider lock on mine has a grinding noise when you close it :barf: . Are they worth 400 plus not with a lock that come with kragle :D .

well, it's not like this thread was going to go anywhere positive anyway. They aren't active on this forum to read or address the complaints. It will probably just turn into a selection of random gripes and arguments.

Kind of hard to be active around a place when the door hit you on the way out :D

Ugh. I've been considering picking up an SNG, but any thread/review always seems to bring up issues with the lock bar. I suppose the best option is to purchase a used knife from a reputable seller OR buy from a brick and mortar.

the newer ones don't have the issues as much, some are also due to break in periods. I've had an SnG and have an SMF and no issues with either except a little stick with the SMF lock but that doesn't bug me

I have had two SMF's and one SnG and all mine have functioned flawlessly. They locked up tight with no play and were not sticky. I believe they all had perfectly centered blades also, but that I cant really remember (I only have one still). I know its a small sample size, just saying they have been great for me.

Okay, my point was not that it was inferior (subjectively speaking) to any of the other knives in the category specifically, but that it was by no means the BEST in the category either. Of course, people will always prefer what they prefer, and that is perfectly fine, but at the same time, that by no means is the same thing as what they prefer being the BEST option.

And again, I like Striders, and I'm not bashing them. I'm just saying that there are knives in the same price category that are objectively better at some tasks and for some purposes than a Strider. Yes, Striders are tough, but honestly most knives are tougher than people really give them credit for, trust me.

Also, you need to read carefully through what I said, because I did say that there are other knives out there made in small batches, much the same way as the Striders, that are of equal quality in many cases, and there are many people who much prefer them to a Strider for their own reasons and needs.
I have handled many knives, and Striders are great knives, but I wouldn't call them the BEST knives for around $500. That's all I'm trying to say. They might be one of the best (in fact, they probably are), but they are not definitively THE BEST, which was all I was trying to say.

And you're not really wrong about your analogy of the cars either. I wouldn't really disagree, but the big thing is that the Porsche would win in the race, while the Hellcat would arguably be more fun to actually drive. It all just depends on what is more important to an individual, because both vehicles are great in their own rights, and it's not like everyone will agree with one being better than the other.

The argument that "it's the best $500 knife there is. Period." is where I run into the issue here. Frankly, you're not supporting your argument with tangible evidence or numbers, but with feelings and subjective experiences that you have had. While those are great for saying that you love the knife and there is certainly nothing wrong with that at all, they are not good evidence for saying that the SMF is the best knife flat-out in it's price category.

And while you make a good point about which knife you are going to take with you and why, that is for one specific purpose. That doesn't mean the Strider is better than all of those other knives you own for every purpose you could ever have need for a knife. I have even more knives, ranging just as far as you do, but I also know that some of my knives are better than others for specific tasks that I might need to do.

Like I said, I'm just saying that blanket statements like "it's the best knife ever" are generally a bad idea and poorly-argued.

Can't say I disagree with anything you said there Charr.. There are different strokes for different folks. Some drivers may win with a Porsche and others may win with the Challenger Hellcat.

If I am anywhere near dressy and want to wear a 3.5 inch blade; the Sebenza is my choice. For absolutely anything else, the Strider SMF is my choice.

For me personally, if I had to choose just one folder to live with for the rest of my life right now, it would hands down be the Strider SMF. It looks cool enough for most occasions, will probably never break, I don't mind scratching it, it's so beefy that I admire it for it's strength, flicking it is just pure Zen and yeah.. it'll slice too due to it's very long grind. It really does do it all and is my only blade that has that much beef and also that much slicing ability..

I also own a couple Marfione Customs and man I have to say I am afraid to scratch them. The Marfione Socom in my avatar is as beefy, but does not slice as good, and subsequently the Marfione's get more case and display time than anything.. This Strider SMF is what I carry the most.

For "me" the Strider truly does it all. And damn.. do I enjoy it. And that is what it's all about it isn't is?

I have to totally agree with you...no way you edc a custom marfione or a duane custom..but, hard to beat striders warranty

Yeah.. EDC'ing a Marfione is like LeBron James putting a sweaty arm around the Dutchess of England. Probably.. not a great idea... :)

After my first three Striders I told myself I'd never buy another.

The two SnGs quickly became so hard to close you needed two hands.

The lock on the beautiful "Baby Huey" needed daily adjustments.

I returned all three and went back to buying more Spyderco and Chris Reeve models.

Then my dealer got in a handful of orange colored PTs. I went a little funny in the head and decided to try one.

I loved it. Fortunately, the proprietary lock screw didn't need adjusting because Strider doesn't sell a tool for these new models.

But, darn it, over time, it developed a grinding sound while closing.

Fortunately, and to my surprise, Tuf Glide seemed to fix it. It now works just fine.

Emboldened, I tried one of the newer SnGs, this time in a CC version. I like the feel of it in my hand much better than the lego. And the lock is almost smooth.

I bought a second SnG CC with different steel. I was on a roll and this one also works fine.

I knew that the MSCs were a step up and I bought an SnG in CC.

Wow!

I bought a second, in all-TI.

Another wow!

Still lusting for CCs, I bought an SMF model.

So far, all of the locks work great, in sharp contrast to those first three that I returned.

Do I think my Striders are stronger than all of my other folders? I doubt it. But if strength were the only issue, I'd be looking at fixed blades instead.

What attracted me to Striders in the first place is their iconic look. They have a certain wantability.

All of that said, I do feel that I have been lucky with my recent purchases. When I buy a Chris Reeve, or a Spyderco for that matter, I'm surprised if everything isn't perfect. I don't have that same confidence when buying a Strider. It still feels like something of a gamble.

Fortunately, these days, I feel like I'm on a winning streak.
