Just got this guy today. This is the newest PT that just came out with the 3 pin pivot mechanism. I heard that this was done to actually keep people from taking apart the knives, but that's just not me! I regualry dismantle my knives to clean and relube. I have NO idea what to do in this situation. The old PT has a standard torx head on the back of the pivot. Anyone have any ideas?

Tell them to stop doing that.
I like my sng and pt but please stop with the strange pivot screws. Jeez, if people want to take them apart at least give them a chance without forcing them to buy a specialized tool.
It is easy to just use a philips or allen screw. And what if i need to take it apart..
Bad thinking on the knife maker's part

Doesn't Strider sell a tool for that? I'm pretty shore I've seen these online before. But I could be mistaken so please correct me if I'm wrong.

i don't think they have one for sale for the PT. I don't think they sell any tools....all i have seen are after market made tools.

I would think that the snap ring pliers would work, that is probably the way I would go about it if I had a new Strider.

I bet a snap ring plier would do the trick then. All you would need to do is hold the 3 hole side with the plier and unscrew the other side, no?

No.
The 'other side' is a press fit. Only the 3-pin side unscrews. Mick Strider said he did it because it was a stronger system than the original torx.

It's for a small pivot, it shouldn't need to be enormously strong. I can use a fingernail file to adjust the original PT pivot. I'll bet I could make a 3 pin tool with a bit of wood and 3 finishing nails in less than 15 minutes.

Hi all,
i just want to bump this instead of creating a new thread.

there are no definitive threads here outlining how to undo this new pivot.
people are discussing the pivot, great, but no one has actually stated how to remove the stupid thing (yes, call me stupid for buying this thing in the first place!!!!, my excuse; i was drunk).

anyway,
-has anyone successfully taken off this pivot.
-if yes, how, what did you use??
-is there a specialized tool available? (i felt sick in the gut saying that!)
-that microtech tool, does it work?

has anyone actually done it?

im really thinking about getting rid of it becuase of this
its really chewing me up not being able to take this apart.

god forbid this thing comes loose out in the field,
what am i supose to do, call strider:
"yea mate, im in Somalia, can you tighten this up for me, taa"

I guess the question would be...Why the change from the original pivot set-up? I see no technical advantage over the alen wrench/bull pivot. Seems odd.

The 'other side' -- straight slot -- on my PT-CC changes position so I guess the press fit is only so good. Not a problem?

Horn, ive only had this thing for a few days now but its interesting that you said that
was your blade tight when you got it or loose to flip open??
mine out of the box was very easy to flip, it feels really loose, no blade play, just very easy to flip, light even.
i thought Strider's where supposed to be tight out of the box (sorry, zip-lock) & that you need to wear them in well thats what ive read about the SNG's+SMF's anyway

hey mystro,
"seems odd", yes it is odd
i feel like this guy:

thats me, hello.

i think your comment (+icon :) ) + the fact that no one has actually chimed in stating that they have actually done it, that is taken one off OR tightened one up has basically tipped me over the edge & i think i might just sell it now. Pity, i thought it was a tough little knife, it seems very strong. In regards to the new pivot, I also don't see any technical advantage over the alen wrench/bull. Seriously, what are people supposed to do, send it in to get it tightened???:thumbdn:

i think you guys should keep this thread open & try to figure out how to do it, i think that there might be a business opportunity for someone here to design a simple special tool:barf: to do this, if you do good on you (well that until he decides the 3-pins is not good enough:p).
This whole 3-pin pivot crap is ridiculous.

PS. oh yea, this is a great knife, great NEW proprietary pivot design, great great technology & innovation, any one want to buy one :)?? :barf:

Why would someone ever need to fully disassemble their framelock knife? You can clean it out just fine without taking the whole thing down, just some penetrating out and a q tip. It just seems a bit maniacal to need to disassemble a knife.

You could always use a small brass punch and a tack hammer, shouldn't be too difficult. Of course getting it tensioned right again is where you're really going to have an issue.

I have one of the PTs with the new pivot too. Mine came very, very tight, but has broken in fairly well, and I think will smooth out even more as I use it. My guess is Strider got tired of adjusting knives that folks sent in after buggering the pivot, but that's just a guess. I would prefer a pivot that I could adjust myself, but otherwise, I really like the knife.

I would be interested in picking up a pivot tool. I buggered the other side of the pivot a bit using a gunsmithing screwdriver that fit almost perfectly. That thing don't wanna move.
