I haven't bought a knife in a long while since I purchased my CRK small Sebenza.

I'm considering buying a Strider PT.

I've done a bunch of searching and reading up, but it seems like quality is hit and miss? Also folks seemed miffed awhile ago about the new pivot design?

So a bit of time has passed, whats the consensus now?

Will I be happy going to a PT from a Small Sebenza?

Thoughts?

I say.... Dive in head first without looking !

Our battered economy needs your ducats ! :D

Hah you do bring up a valid concern...do I really need to spend $300 bucks right now =)

What about a used Strider ? I saw one for sale ( I think here..) for the sweet price of $200.

I've been toying with the idea of buying a Strider for years now but.... There's just so many others I pine for.

the sng I had was great quality, I say go for it. Worst case is you dont like it and sell or trade it on here.

I had the old design, tired of it, and sold it. Kept my small Sebenza, though. I missed the PT and just bought another one with the new pivot. Like it lots. The fit and finish on both of mine were great -- no issues. Not as well made as the Sebenza, though. But the PT is better in some ways. I reviewed my old PT and you can click on the review through my signature line.

I have a PT and it has poor lock up, up and down blade play, I use it alot because that is what Strider advised and said it would work out, well I'm still waiting. I have two SNG's both are rock solid.

To be honest, I don't think you'll be all that happy with the fit and finish or overall feel of the PT after carrying the CRKs and William Henrys. And by "feel" I don't mean how the knife fits your hand but more along the lines of being quite a bit less refined than the other two. Also, to me at least, the PT didn't seem quite as rugged as it's bigger brothers so it was kind of a worst of both worlds situation but, as the saying goes, YMMV.

I bought a PT with new pivot. No tool existed at the time. So I got a soldering iron to loosen the Loctite. A thinned out screwdriver on the one side and 3 toothpicks on the other - and voila! Loosened the pivot nicely.

The reason I needed to open it was the darn thing was hideously tight. Never in a million years was it going to smooth out. Near ripped up my thumb trying to open it one-handed. Problem was once the pivot was loosened the lock-up was affected.

I couldn't tolerate the not-so-smooth lock bar engagement with the tang. Scratchy and 'clicky'. Really irritating at $300!

I didn't like the pocket clip at all, it also rode too high (easy to knock out of pocket). I loved the blade grind, shape and ergonomics of the PT. The choil works brilliantly for a small knife (I have big hands). I preferred it to the small Sebenza in many ways.

I sold it rather soon after buying it. I would like to try another one again. But I fear the clip and potential fit/finish issues. It's all very irritating - cos you can get some darn well made knives at 1/10th the price that get it right (Spyderco, Ka-Bar Dozier, Blade-Tech).

I was in the same position you are in last year. I got one from plaza Cutlery. They hand picked it. Just ask. They will take care of you. Awesome knife. Love my Sebenza, but the PT is awesome.

Yip, Me too. Plaza! He's a good man that Dan. Hand picked.
But then I am one hell of a fussy. (silly me looking for THE perfect small edc - and in the process bought, rejected and sold a PT, XM-18 and a small Sebenza )
I have been toying with the idea of getting another one from him. I do miss something about the PT - it does get a lot right (despite aforementioned snags).

How does your PT open? Easy? Mine was a swine.

So have you found the perfect EDC yet? :)

Mine opened great, but was really hard to unlock at first. Now it is smooth like butter. I use 2 fingers (thumb and pointer) to open it. I think that is how it is meant to be. The PT fits in your hand better than almost any knife I have ever held. It really is great.

I would be interested to know what direction you are going in looking for the perfect edc. Those are all top choices in my book. If they don't work.....

I like my PT alot ! The clip
Does make the knife ride a bit high though! I think you will be much happier with a 3" xm18 , or both :D

I had a PT CC. It was a nice knife, if a little overpriced in my eyes (which is true of all Strider's). I ended up trading it to Solo... :p

I love my PT! I carry it a lot, more than my small Sebenza actually. They're great knives. I'm not a big fan of the new pivot, but other than that, it's pretty much perfect. Mine is very well made, lockup is still rock solid.

I think the PT is an awesome knife, and I have owned 6 or 7 over the years. The knife just fit's perfectly in my hand, which is why I always seem to have one. It is a tough little knife.
As far as issue's, blade's being off center were ~ 50/50, and as a matter of fact I just got a new TNK Tanto PTCC which came with a slightly off center blade.

2 of the PTs I owned had lockup issues. They both were bought used, and I was unaware of any problems until I had the knife in hand. So much for full disclosure:grumpy: . Strider took care of one via warranty, the scale was drilled out for a lanyard on the other, so it wasn't covered under warranty. So if you do buy used make sure it isn't pimped, because it won't be covered by Strider. Anyways my suggestion would be to find one used and give it a try. If it doesn't work out for you you can always sell or trade with minimal loss.

What sort of lockup issues? Can you describe them? Too much/too little/other?

I got frustrated and put the search on hold, and bought some flashlights!
In the mean time I have ordered a Blade-Tech Ganyana (the $20 one), a Ka-Bar Dozier mini, and my Al Mar SLB is being replaced under warrantee. So I'll have a few cheapies to play with, and my SLB. I considered the Burger EXK1 but hate the way it opens.
