Strider Sng vs. PT

Practically identical knives, it's completely a size matter.

SMG, SnG, PT just different sizes of the same knife. I prefer a slightly larger knife for my main knife, but a PT makes a great back up or sheeple knife. The SnG DGG is my EDC.

PT does not have the Hinderer lock stop.

It is really quite a bit smaller than the SNG... is it still a practical EDC?
Any pics compared to knives other than striders? i've never gotten to handle one so i really don't know the sizes well

Comparing overall lengths, it actually falls in the most used size of the EDC market. Overall, SnG's are fairly large for carry - because of the width of the blade and handle.

Most knives are much less wide, and preferred for EDC because they carry clipped or in pocket with less difficulty or discomfort. I have a Sebenza clone midsized between the large and small Classic, and notice it far less than a SnG in work jeans. Same for CRKT's, Benchmades, Kershaws, etc. The wide Strider style isn't compromised as much for carry.

The PT is probably the perfect size for EDC - but Strider customers are largely a "If big is good, BIGGER is better" crowd.

Well, i make 350 a month for being a student and plan on purchasing a strider or a crk... just doing all my research before i start stashing cash in the cookie jar
any production knives you would compare the pt to?

I find the PT CC to be a great EDU ( Every Day User ). It carries well , out of the way till you need it , doesn't spook people when you use it.

the only pict I have comparing to other knives , probably wont help much.

As far as comparing the PT CC to the Small Seb , or the SnG to the large Seb , I would suggest finding some other knifenutz in your area and handling them all if you can. Either of those are fine choices , that will last you a lifetime , but they do have a different feel.

I will see if I can find any other comparison picts.

If you're on a budget and want a quality knife that is close in size to the PT, try a Spyderco Native. It'll do everything the PT can do for about $40.

i think the reg sng is a bit large for edc, but also the pt is too small. not so much the overall size, but the choil eliminates to much usable blade.

i have an sng cc that i find carries much better than the reg sng.

i also have an smf on the way, but i don't see myself edc'ing it. hopefully its not so huge that i never carry it.

I'll snap a few pics for you in a hour or so. I have a few SNGs, and it is perfect for EDC IMHO. I also like big knives, Mili, large sebbie, Endura.

Funny thing about a SNG is it's as long as a large sebbie, but the finger choil makes the cutting edge as long as a small sebbie. I like the extra handle because it handles like a big knife but has the percision cut of a smaller knife.

I really really like DGG and CC SNGs for EDC

If knives get too big I still like them but do not carry them. SMF, Kirby Lambert FireBall, Strider RC, ZT 300 are all great knives but a little big for me to carry around all day. SNG fits just right IMHO

I actually have a spyderco native that i edc every now and then but i don't like the lockback... plus im hoping to start dipping into customs and higher end knives. it's gotten to the point where i like knives more than guns, never thought that would happen

I do NOT wish to get into yet another argument about which knife is better but I will give you my thoughts on EDC comparisons.

I generally carry the SnG around in my pocket when I'm working around the property at home. It's a great compromise between being easy enough to carry and big and strong enough to cope with the, sometimes, nasty uses I put it to.

If I'm simply going out somewhere on the weekend, shopping, visiting, whatever, I'll generally put the Sebbie in my pocket. I find it sits much more comfortably in my jeans pocket than the SnG. Additionally I believe the design of the Sebbie blade makes it a much better slicer and general purpose knife. As an example, it will peel fruit much more easily than the SnG.

Both are excellent knives, but they are great for different reasons. If your looking for a tough, no nonsense folder and don't mind something that's a little bulky, go for the SnG. If you want a good general purpose knife that's a little more convenient for pocket carry, then go for the Sebenza. Or, possibly the PT. (I don't own a PT so I can't make any comments on it.)

NOTE: I haven't mentioned other knives which may, or may not, be suitable, I'm simply commenting on the relative merits of two particular knives because I have owned, and regularly used, both for several years.

+1

I went a little crazy with the pics, so to keep your thread on topic I posted them to my BIG photo thread (Click me). They can be found on the last page there.

I should add, that I carry a slippie with almost any Tack-T. Mostly for peeling apples, cutting fruit, food prep stuff. I'm not sure a SNG would be BEST for peeling an apple. It would do, but there are better options for this knife knut. :D

Tell you what, stick around save your bucks. Learn a little and I will send you a CC SNG to test drive for a week. You ship it back on your dime(about 10 bucks.) Striders are not for everybody

I know it is a heated debate but that does seem to be the general concensus on the two knives... SNG tough, no nonsense, Sebie more practical more refined

Absolutely correct. SnG is great for hacking and slashing at things and it will slice nicely if profiled the right way but, as you say, for peeling apples, there are better knives around. Like anything, horses for courses.

Best plan is to have several knives and use the one most suitable for the job at hand.

Yup, that about sums it up. Lately I've been alternating between my small Sebenza and my SnG for EDC use and either will get the job done (in style :D). My only major gripe with the Strider is that I can pretty much forget about using the pocket that it's clipped in for carrying anything else - but that's just the price to pay for the hand-filling grip shape.

p.s. I could be wrong about this, but I thought I read somewhere that PTs were no longer going to be produced with pocket clips so that might be an issue if you're still considering getting one.

p.p.s. So-Lo - Great pics man! Not to hijack this thread but I noticed that you had a Sage. How would you compare it's feel to that of the SnG? I only ask because I'm thinking of getting one to carry on those occasions that the SnG would be too much but I'd still have the large choil along with a similar flat ground blade shape.

The PT CC does not have a clip. The reg PT does , as far as the reg PT's availability , I don't think they were discontinued.

Wow... you have a gorgeous collection. I will probably end up getting both the sebie and strider, the main thing is which should i get first

Thanks, but most have moved on to new homes. I only seem to keep about 15-25 around.

My ideal "collection" is to have as few knives as possible...yet still be happy with the collection. I want to "use" all my knives a lot. So I'm just a user on the hunt for a few nice knives.

The "others" are just for fun
;)
