Hey, first post here, just looking for some advice. I'm at the point in my knife addiction that I've decided to get a nice, high-end blade (finally). I'm pretty well narrowed down to two, between the Strider PT and the Chris Reeve Small Sebenza 21 Insigno. Now obviously the CRK is alot easier to find in stock, but I probably won't be ordering either for at least a couple weeks. If you have an alternative suggestion, I'd love to hear it but the one caveat is the blade has to be no more (well maybe a TINY BIT more) than 3 inches due to Navy regulations.
I love the look and apparent quality of both knives, but I wonder about the toughness and durability of the CRK. It always seemed like more of a "gents knife" meant for removing the tag from a pair of Italian loafers, but alot of people have touted its strength and real use applications. For the record, I'm not talking about "hard use", but I'd like a folder I can carry every day and feel comfortable hiking with and using to make fuzz sticks and prep food. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks!

I dont have a Strider, mainly because the look of it does not appeal to me, however, I can say with confidence that the CRK can take more then just cutting a tag off a pair of loafers.

Have a look here (can skip through the pages looking for pictures)

I dont have time to baby my knives during the day, only at night and cant complain about the Sebeza and its durability.

I can however mention that in the specific cash frame you can start looking into a custom knife maker. There are many on this forum and maybe even around your area that can build you something you like.

Remember though, each knife has its pro's and cons and many people can defend their opinion with passion. At the end you will have to buy what "talks to you".

I've been carrying my small insingo for a couple weeks now, and I couldn't be happier with it. While I haven't subjected it to what most would consider hard use (I'm a teacher who lives in the suburbs), I certainly haven't babied it, and it feels like a tank. I can't speak to the Strider, but I would have full confidence in the Sebenza.

Welcome!
You mentioned two fantastic folding knives. You need to see which feels better in your hand. I had a Seb and I love the design buy I prefer the Strider SnG.

If you're Navy, consider a 3" XM -18! I've never held an SNG, but the Seb is a great knife. You won't make a wrong choice, but consider looking at the same size Hinderer.

I love the xm-18, but 600+ is just TOO much. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using it. The main thing between the sebenza/strider is the feel in the hand and the f/f. I have NEVER heard of any QC issues with a sebenza

Go with the Seb, the PT is just too tiny in the blade.

Ergos go to the PT
Fit and finish goes to the Seb

It probably boils down to the ergos in your hand--see if you can try them in person, as that's really the only way you will figure that out. Both are great and plenty tough for whatever you plan to do with a sub-3" blade. I don't own the CRK, but the Insingo blade has been taunting me for a long time. I have owned the PT for 5+ years, and it has taken everything I've thrown at it, including a lot of salt water baths, without problem. Lock-up has been rock-solid.

Besides the ergos and blade profiles, you'll notice they sit differently in the pocket--the CRK is a bit thinner and deeper, while the PT rides higher and is slightly thicker. Can't really say what you prefer, but my PT is about the only knife I'll wear with swim trunks and not worry about it getting wet or unclipped.

Sm Seb is a better overall all/all around knife than the PT. The PT is a cute little knife and it is comfy in hand (I had a CC) but it has a reeeeely short cutting edge. Between sm Seb and SnG... Hard choice. Personally I might have to lean toward the SnG. BTW the Sm Seb and SnG have the exact same length cutting edge. I have both and the one factor that would push me toward the SnG for a "one and only" knife is the fact that Striders warranty does not recognize the word "abuse." Make no mistake though... A Sebenza is as or maybe more solidly built than a Strider folder.

They're just completely different to me. I don't own either but I've gotten to handle both and at the price for them I would just get a custom. If I had to choose between the 2 I'd probly get the sebbie but it's mostly personal preference

I had the PT for a few days. I didnt like the way it felt in my hand so I don't agree that the ergos are better. Also it felt cheap to me. I know that it's tough and built to last and stand up to abuse, etc, but the G10 handle just felt very plasticky to me. I didn't care for it. I guess I just like the weight and solidity of the small Seb, which I still own. Sleek, compact, feels great in hand, and tough. I don't think there's anything the PT can do that the Small Seb can't.

Neither. Tim Galyean Pro Series Small JYD :D

I think Military can buy direct from Rick. Might want to check before you decide.

I believe you are correct, Greg. And the OP would be well served to do a little investigating before he arrives at a final decision.

The PT is really tiny and feels like it's supposed to be on a keychain.
Ntm...they quit making them a while back, so they only have the old lock-face.
Old lock-face usually = blade play.
Dropping a nice amount of $ on the sebenza is a decision that won't bite you in the azz.

True. But buying a Hinderer directly from Rick could eventually generate enough money to buy two Sebenzas. ;)

Sebenza is the better knife, and CRK is a great company.

I thought I wanted a PT several years ago, but when I held one at Blade I quickly layed it right back down.
