Strider vs. Sebbie.

Have they started producing the PT again? It was discontinued, and the SJ-75 was the replacement. Although they are available used on the forum now and then. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The PT was never discontinued. Just put on the back burner. You'll see new ones around here shortly.

If you are really interested in comparable other options, look at the Spyderco Sage 2 and and save the money.

Edited to reflect a quotation change.

Anyway, of the 3 knives thus far suggested- I'd order the 3 inch hinderer. They are awesome knives (I'm not sure you'll ever find anyone saying they dislike their hinderer), and if by some chance you are in the vast minority of people who aren't crazy about them you can sell it to fund pretty much anything else you can dream up short of crazy customs. I probably prefer the PT to the sebenza for purely personal reasons- I carry my knives more as tools than just a cutting edge and I truthfully prefer their aesthetics. Regardless of which you pick though, all three are very nice and revered knives.

I'm actually a defender of Mick Strider (I don't know the man, don't own one of his knives yet, but to say some of the criticism against him is unfairly regarded as absolute truth is pretty fair assessment from my perspective), but the officers paying full price on his webpage actually made me laugh out loud the first time I read it. His/Their reasoning is fine, it just made me laugh.

I tried to retract my statement seeing this is not related to this topic. I guess to each their own.

Wow, I had no idea Hinderer sold his knives THAT much cheaper to military! Well that's a done deal for me then, the XM-18 is absolutely my favorite knife I've ever seen, I only didnt include it because I didn't want to spend 1000. Deal, as soon as the next run of 3" flipper models is done I'm getting one.

If I had known you were Military that would have been my first recommendation. 3" XM rules!!!!!

Just FYI contacted Rob a couple weeks back about wanting to direct order a 3" XM. I was told that the next batch of 3" wouldn't be produced until around June-July.
Ended up pulling the trigger on a secondhand from the Exchange and I am absolutely loving it -no regrets! If you're thinking about Strider, I'd go with at least the SNG, a bit more expensive but much more knife imo.

I'm not sure what the background is of Chris Reeve with respect to military training, but Strider and his partner Dwayne were Special Forces all the way. Mick was a Ranger killing machine in Somalia and Dwayne was a sniper's sniper. Both true American heroes. Just ask them.

If that isn't enough to sway you toward a Strider, then I don't know what else to say.

Funniest post in a long time.

You're joking right?

Get a HINDERER since your in the navy you can get a hinderer for super cheap , they usually go for between 600-1,000 maybe more but active duty leos or military can get them directly from him for 325 that's the route I'd go If i were you.

I e-mailed Hinderer, got a reply from Rob Orlando that states they do not give discounts to any agency, military, etc.

I don't think it's the discount but rather the chance to obtain a Hinderer at list price. It is by all accounts a HUGE discount from the secondary market.

I think Military can buy direct from Rick. Might want to check before you decide.

GregB

Can do...and save $200 markup.

And...get the SJ75 model. It is a 3" model, but a much easier model to hold and to use. I've had four or five of each. Also, nice blade-shape.

You're right, I think my email to them stated discount when it should have said list price. They don't give a discount, they allow you to purchase at retail.

Sebenza is the better knife, and CRK is a great company.

Forget the PT; get a Strider SJ75; still a 3" heavy-duty leaf-shaped blade.
Sebenza is made with tighter tolerances; is generally smoother. More "genteel" in appearance. If you're trimming your nails, then get the small Sebenza. In the woods? Get THE STRIDER SJ75, 3" blade. No doubt.
Both brands are easy take-down, cleaning.

Strider is "particularly" designed to be much stronger, to be used in rougher environments, IMO.
Both have excellent Customer Service departments. CRK is quicker with service, but may refuse to do certain requested operations, particularly if the knife has been sanded, painted, rounded edges by smoothing, etc. which voids their warranty. CRK may refuse to do those operations EVEN if you volunteer to pay for services rendered.
Strider service is rather slow, but they will take in an old piece of junk with a broken tip, modded blade surface, a pivot welded in with super-glue and send you back a knife that looks and feels and acts like brand new...all at zero charge. Believe it. I've seen it; experienced it.
I've had about twenty of each brand, in four basic folding models of Strider... and in large, small Sebenzas and Umnumzaan in CRK.
I would get MY kid the SJ75. All is my opinion, based on owning many of each.
They are both excellent brands; the two best in that price range. You won't go wrong with either the SJ75 or the small Sebbie. Make sure that a small Seb will fit your hand size. It's too small for my hand, and is your only choice in size with the CRK.

More than 10 years ago, I bought a used small Sebenza for maybe $175. At the time, I knew it was a high quality knife, but back then Chris Reeve didn't have the huge reputation/following that they do now (I hadn't heard of them until I saw this knife). I just noticed that this is a fairly rare, early, 'P' model. I see some of these sold for over $600 on ebay recently.

Point of my story is that Strider just doesn't have the long-term reputation of CRK, and I bet never will. The drama about the owner, as shown in this thread, will probably always hold them back from ever being on the level of CRK. If you want a short-term beater knife, buy whichever appeals to you now. If you are the sort of person that holds onto stuff for a long time (like me), buy the CRK. I think the CRKs will always hold their value, and may go up some. I doubt Strider will be around in another 20 years.

My PT is absolutely rock-solid. 2.2" cutting edge, 2.7" total blade-length, thickness is 0.121", or ~1/8".
The small Sebbie is 2.94" blade-length; nearly all of it is cutting edge. Remember...no choil.

However, the PT has a very nice choil, allowing for finer close-up work with thumb up on the blade's spine. The PT has NOT been available for some time now, and it is debated whether or not it will be discontinued. The Strider is warranty is for the "LIFE OF THE KNIFE" and they will replace anything you break and put in new stop-pin if you get too much wear. And it will cost you about $15 in POSTAGE. How do you beat that?

I like Sebbies, but I prefer the large size. I've sold all of my small ones as they are much too small for my hand. But my PT is perfect when I come up on the knife with the choil. You CANNOT do this with a Seb...no choil. The PT butt extends beyond my hand and I have a solid grip. NO CONTEST.

The PT is getting a bad rap here...IMO. The PT is an EXCELLENT knife, and MUCH nicer for close-up cutting and finer detail work.
Take a look at the pics of the Strider in my hand...vs the small Sebbie in my hand.

Couldn't have said it, or shown it, better myself.

I love my PT.

BTW, the F/F on my PT is as good as any CRK I've owned.
