Strider vs. Sebbie.

Get a HINDERER since your in the navy you can get a hinderer for super cheap , they usually go for between 600-1,000 maybe more but active duty leos or military can get them directly from him for 325 that's the route I'd go If i were you.

My PT is absolutely rock-solid. 2.2" cutting edge, 2.7" total blade-length, thickness is 0.121", or ~1/8".
The small Sebbie is 2.94" blade-length; nearly all of it is cutting edge. Remember...no choil.

However, the PT has a very nice choil, allowing for finer close-up work with thumb up on the blade's spine. The PT has NOT been available for some time now, and it is debated whether or not it will be discontinued. The Strider is warranty is for the "LIFE OF THE KNIFE" and they will replace anything you break and put in new stop-pin if you get too much wear. And it will cost you about $15 in POSTAGE. How do you beat that?

I like Sebbies, but I prefer the large size. I've sold all of my small ones as they are much too small for my hand. But my PT is perfect when I come up on the knife with the choil. You CANNOT do this with a Seb...no choil. The PT butt extends beyond my hand and I have a solid grip. NO CONTEST.

The PT is getting a bad rap here...IMO. The PT is an EXCELLENT knife, and MUCH nicer for close-up cutting and finer detail work.
Take a look at the pics of the Strider in my hand...vs the small Sebbie in my hand.

Neither is the better knife.
Both cut just fine, and will last a very long time. More so with Strider's warranty.

I've handled Strider SMF and owned 3 Sebenzas, I am not a fan of Striders and while I liked my Sebenza I can safely say I am no longer in love with it.
Sebenza is good light edc, and while it can handle heavy usage just fine it is incredibly uncomfortable and unwieldy when anything but dry, the micarta inlays don't help enough.
It's edge retention is below par for S30V/S35VN but that's a trade off for toughness. This can be a major point to some.

I never used the SMF, just felt a lot better in hand, more comfortable and a load more grippy. However I could tell it wasn't manufactured as well as the sebenza. The lockbar was a tad bit sticky, the blade would loosen then tighten by just flicking it open a few dozen times. (I saw a youtube video later on apparently the pivot can rotate freely).
It did look like it could take a beating though that's for sure.

If you need an edc for mostly medium to hard use, get the strider.
If you just need an EDC for mostly light to medium usage with occasional hard use get the Sebenza.

I'm not sure what the background is of Chris Reeve with respect to military training, but Strider and his partner Dwayne were Special Forces all the way. Mick was a Ranger killing machine in Somalia and Dwayne was a sniper's sniper. Both true American heroes. Just ask them.

If that isn't enough to sway you toward a Strider, then I don't know what else to say.

Hit the nail on the head. I have had a sebenza and I have had a strider. I prefer the sebenza. However - its mainly because I live in a city and have no need for incredible lock strength or very grippy g10. Most of my cutting tasks can be done with a mnandi. I think CRK has better fit and finish, and I spend more time playing with my knives / appreciating them than I do cutting things, so CRK for me. However, if I'm going hiking / camping / cutting things all day - Strider.

Oh dear lord, lemme go grab my poncho and a bucket of popcorn :D

I had the PT for a few days. I didnt like the way it felt in my hand so I don't agree that the ergos are better. Also it felt cheap to me. I know that it's tough and built to last and stand up to abuse, etc, but the G10 handle just felt very plasticky to me. I didn't care for it. I guess I just like the weight and solidity of the small Seb, which I still own. Sleek, compact, feels great in hand, and tough. I don't think there's anything the PT can do that the Small Seb can't.

I 100% agree. I had an SNG for a day and half before returning it. It felt like a $20 bargain bin knife in my hand, and it was clear it was going to need a ton of time to break in before it could be opened 1 handed. My Sebenza's have all come out of the box with very smooth action (my carbon fiber one has been the very best).

Having said that, the choice for you is easy. Go with a Hinderer xm18 3". Go read the thread that is stickied in the hinderer section about direct ordering for military and shoot Rob an email to see when their next 3" production will be taking place.

Then, after you get it and want some variation, get a Sebenza too :)

Apologies and way off topic but are you being sarcastic?

Don't forget the beer. The beer is the most important part when talking Strider :D.....

EDITED TO ADD:

I do own a couple Sebbies and they are excellent knives. They don't have special forces engineering like the Striders, but hey, in knife collecting you give up a little to get a little.

I own a Small Sebenza and it is a great knife and I think that's a great start in to high end knives that was my start in to $300 plus knives. I decided to wait to buy Strider until I can feel it in my hand that's why I am going to ECCKS but good luck man.

Me neither, but your humor is well put.

However, as I recall, the top General of the U.S. Marines, in 2003, declared that the Strider SMF IS the official folding knife of the U.S. Marine Corps. And that carries some weight with me. Even though I was a dogface, I really respect those darned jarheads.

Recently, I sold (with a big discount) two Striders to a Marine who was again getting deployed to the SandLands. He had previously owned about 10-12 of them, and purchased a SMF and a SNG from me before he went back. He did not inquire about any Sebbies for sale.

I think I'd need something stronger than beer to wade through that mess :p

I have a sebenza 21 and a Strider smf. First let me say that they are both great knives and are both very solid and well built. Im sure that you would be more than happy with either choice. I prefer the sebenza 21 for everyday carry. It is a great all purpose knife and it carries very easily. I love my smf as well but it is very tactical looking. I find that when I pull out my sebenza non knife people comment that it is a nice knife and they might ask where I got it. When I pull out my strider people say holy s**t why are you carrying that thing around! It is an intimidating knife to non knife people. When I am in the woods or if I were to go to war I would prefer the SMF. I guess it depends on your own personal preference and its intended purpose.

For some strange reason, I have this strong feeling that Mr. General might not make that same decision today. Besides, I have it on good authority that the General in question also had a strange appetite for wearing womens clothes as seen here in his West Point graduation uniform.

I love the xm-18, but 600+ is just TOO much. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using it. The main thing between the sebenza/strider is the feel in the hand and the f/f. I have NEVER heard of any QC issues with a sebenza

Navy is a branch of the military. Send an email to hinderer you can get an xm-18 directly from them for cheaper than the secondary market. He sells direct to EMS, police and military. I just got one from him and let's just say the price is a steal. I prefer it over both my CRK and strider.

Direct pricing for Hinderer is $385+$10 shipping. Only problem is I don't know when they're doing a run of 3", I heard they're doing another run of 3.5"s next.

What is a top-general?
Because from my understanding all Generals... are just that. Generals. They command portions of the army, airforce, or navy.

Unless by Top general he means the president? Which is silly since they aren't generals the President would be commander in chief.

Sebenza for me, hands down. Its simple design has been proven for 25 years. The knife will last several lifetimes and is just pure class.

Having carried and used both, I just had more confidence in the sebenza, and much prefer the looks. The strider has that overbuilt look and feel, but still somehow feels cheaper and less solid than the sebenza.

Have they started producing the PT again? It was discontinued, and the SJ-75 was the replacement. Although they are available used on the forum now and then. Correct me if I'm wrong.
